Hats, hats, hats!!

Get ready...

Thursday 1 September marks the day when we will need to start wearing our summer hats.

If you need to buy another one remember that the Uniform Shop is open every week day, except for Wednesday, from 8-4.30pm.

We will have a few 'grace days' as we get used to having them on our heads again, but hope to have everyone 'hatted up' by the middle of September at the very latest.

Thank you

Right Into Reading

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful week we have had celebrating worlds between the pages. We were very lucky on Tuesday to have our Headmaster, Mr Bradley Fenner, Head of Preparatory School , Mr Neil Andary, Director of Teaching and Learning, Mr Ben Evans and our very own Director, Ms Melanie Garland come and read to classes, sharing favourite books from their own childhood. It was wonderful for our children to meet members of staff from the wider college and was also a fantastic opportunity for those staff members to begin to know our children.

On Wednesday the children were entertained by a rag tag bunch of amateur theatre players and notorious narrator  (Ms Garland, Mr Charlwood, Mrs Rocca and Mrs Prest and Mrs Mel Bishop,) who performed the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. There were laughs all around as Mr Charlwood donned his bright pink fur and a pair of maracas and as Mrs Prest affected most accents found in the British Isles! We had a wonderful time and it was fabulous for the children to see that the staff also like to put on costumes and get up and perform as much as they do.

On Thursday we joined the Prep School in a reading flash mob on the top oval in the warm spring sunshine.

We saved the best for last with our annual dress up day on Friday. We would like to hugely thank our wonderfully supportive parent body who really got behind our book theme. You are all to be congratulated on your efforts, we know how hard it is to convince a four year old to choose something other than a movie character. We were thrilled with both the turn out and the understanding the children had of their book characters.

Thanks again and happy reading

The ELC team

Mattingley

Dear Mattingley Families and Friends,

What an amazing week we have had this week. Mrs Cooper has kindly left us with two Spiny Leaf insects to look after. With Mrs Rocca's help we have made them a safe home in a class vase so we can have a closer look. Some of our courageous  friends took an even closer look at them by holding them in their hands. From their observations we found that they have 6 very sticky legs that like to cling on and climb - especially our friends bodies in the classroom.

He's on my arm. He feels soft- Edie
He's playing with my eyelash- Lochlann
Incey wincey spider- Lilah
I'm brave to touch him- Laila
He's crawling everywhere- Walter
I will rescue them if they come out of their home- Felix

We look forward to watching them grow over the next few months. Please feel free to have a closer look when you come into our classroom. They are fascinating to watch.

What an amazing week we have had celebrating Book Week. On Tuesday Mr Coleman came down from the Library to share some of his favourite books with us. On Thursday we took part in a reading flash mob, making our way over to the top oval in the morning, sharing 'Wombat stew', which is one of our very favourites.

On Friday we had so many wonderful characters come to ELC, we couldn't believe our eyes. It was so wonderful to see the children's excitement and wonder as they talked about who they were dressed up as and why they loved the book that their character came from. We had lots of fun showing off our wonderful costumes in the parade and playing together in our outdoor learning environment. We would like to say a big thank you to all our families that put together such fantastic costumes. Everyone looked fabulous.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
Mrs Kimberley Mason and Mrs Coney Rocca

Angwin

Dear Families and Friends,

We have had so many exciting learning experiences this week in Angwin!

Our class has been holding our spiny leaf insects and watching as they move on their hands and arms. For some of the children this can be quite a risk taking experience!

We have been exploring numbers and counting with stones, number cards and even using a die.

The Chinese restaurant in the Workshop has been very popular with many customers coming to try out the delicious fried rice and the fried icecream.

Our Book Week has been lots of fun with storytelling, a play with the teachers retelling “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” and our special Book Week parade on Friday.
Poppy: I am a Spanish dancer from “The Story of Ferdinand”
Romesh: I am Wally from “Where’s Wally?”
Matilda: I am Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz”
Harry H: I am a shark!
Andreas: I am the tiger from “The Tiger who came to tea”
Wolf: I am a sailor from “The  Old Sailor” story.

We have been busy preparing and sharing about our Dads in readiness for the Big Boys Breakfast on Thursday next week 8:30 – 9:30am. Looking forward to this special occasion!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Pip and Wenting

Langley

Dear Langley families,

This week the Langley children have been book mad for Book Week!
On Wednesday the children saw a special re-enactment of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' performed by some of the ELC teachers. The children absolutely loved watching the presentation; here is what some children had to say when asked what they saw at the show:

Angus - “A goat…. Grass”
Riani - “Three goats. What have they got on their heads?”
William. D - “Deer horns”
Kaeshav - “They dress up of the goat. I saw going up the bridge, over the bridge”
Lucy - “That pretty” (referring to Mrs Prest’s green hair)
William, A - “The goat and the bridge”
Lola - “The drum”
Nicholas - “A man and flowers”
Teddy - “The grass”

Thursday's reading flash mod was the first time many of our children have ventured up to the big school. It was quite an adventurous walk as we spotted the first signs of Spring - blossoms on the trees.

Finally our Book Week Parade was a huge success! A great effort was put into many fantastic costumes!

Have a great weekend

The Importance of Play

Play is an antidote for depression
When you look back at your fondest memories, you may find they are often
memories of times when you played. Times when you found yourself having
a good belly laugh, when you played games or did something fun with
others! Each person has their own memories and those happy, playful times
interwoven into the day to day stuff of life, add interest and vitality.
What do you remember from your childhood? Was there time spent
camping, fishing, playing board games, swimming, playing tag, water
fights...? The list of possibilities is endless and most of these activities are
very inexpensive. Many would cost as little as 5 to15 minutes.
Children are wonderful teachers and they are programmed to come along
when we most need to be reminded to take time out from the responsibilities
of living, earning and raising families. We miss out on moments of
connection when we tell them, “We’ll play later” or “I don’t have time right
now”.

Playtime creates connection
It’s so easy to place greater value on working hard or getting everything
done and forgetting about the equal value of enjoying healthy fun and
laughter. This is a big part of the work-life balance equation. Working too
much can result in too little sleep, short tempers and strained relations. The
antidote may be simply making time to play. These moments of connection
build memories that last a lifetime.
Can you put a play date on the calendar this week? Decide on an
activity and honour it as top priority. Ideally, it will involve others in the
family. Perhaps it will be a picnic on the weekend, simply making a
game out of the veggie prep or spending an hour playing games with
the family. Whatever it is, it will be time well spent!

Chapple

Dear Chapple Families

What a busy Book Week we have had! It started off with us making our own books. Then we had two special visitors who came to read to us- Our Headmaster Mr Fenner and Mr Evans, our Director of Teaching and Learning. We stomped and romped to the Wild Thing rumpus. Then we watched the Town Square Players perform “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.” The Middle Goat was a particularly talented actor. In the afternoon we went to see the Book Week play. On Thursday we went to the library and took part in the Reading Flash mob. And we haven’t even got to the Parade yet!

Ned: We read a book at the playground.
Abi: We are going to dress up.
Lucy: We saw Billy Goats Gruff.
William: Mr Charlwood was the Middle Goat.
Benji: Ms Prest was the troll, an angry one.
Adi: Ms Rocca was the little goat.

We are currently collecting old newspapers if you have any available.

As we gear up to starting school, I am beginning to get parents ask me about what school children are going to, so they can arrange play dates etc. If you could let us know where they are heading that would be great. mcharlwood@staff.pac.edu.au

There is planned to be a separate dress up day for our Frozen, Star Wars and Avengers fans. -Movie Day 7th September.

Big Boys Breakfast is 1st September. You should have received invite and questionnaire.

Thanks

Martin Charlwood

Wilkins

Dear Wilkins friends and families,

We have had a wonderful time celebrating Book Week this week! On Wednesday we viewed a drama production done by our very own teachers, Mel Bishop, Melissa Prest, Coney Rocca, Martin Charlwood and Melanie Garland. They did a very interactive performance for us, with their own creative version of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children thought it was very funny, as did the teachers, while we watched the performers try on costumes and entertain us with funny accents.

On Thursday we were involved in our very first reading Reading Flash Mob. This involved the Early Learning Centre and Junior School combining on the oval and reading stories on picnic rugs. It was a beautiful day to get outside and read a book, the children choose The Very Brave Bear which is one of our favorites!

Next week we celebrate Fathers Day with our Big Boys Breakfast which is on Thursday 1st of September. Thank you to those of you who have returned your RSVP's and provided some gorgeous photos. The children are looking forward to sharing this day with you all and have been busily making some special gifts. If you have any questions regarding the day please feel feel to ask us.

We hope you all have a great weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.
