ELC Team

Working Bee

Dear Parents,

On Tuesday 10th December we are holding a working bee to start cleaning and sorting resources in preparation for our expanded ELC next year. We would love some parent helpers to assist us with some jobs so if you are free at any stage on this day, even if it just for a portion of the day, we would love for you to join us! Please express your interest and indicate your availability with Jeanine Dry by Friday 6th December.

Thankyou

Congratulations

Congratulations Zac Grice from Edgerley! Zac has been awarded the STATE WINNER for his preschool entry in the Primary Maths Challenge. Zac’s entry was titled ‘Music, Maths and Me’ and he was able to incorporate his passion for music and maths in both the classroom and at home. Congratulations Zac! What an effort - we are all very proud of you!

Langley Room

Dear Langley Family and Friends,
We have been getting into the Christmas spirit this week collaging our classroom Christmas tree, making paper chain decorations, retelling our own versions of the Nativity story using the dress ups and props, painting individual Christmas trees, listening and dancing to Christmas music and even pretending Miss Kerry was Father Christmas and sharing our Christmas wishes with her!

The children have also enjoyed role playing in the hairdressing salon. You should see some of the amazing hair styles we have created as we wash, blow dry and style each other’s hair! We have excitedly watched our silk worm moths come out of their cocoons and begin to lay eggs. We have observed the moths and used mirror image printing to create our very own silk worm moths. During group times and play times we have been identifying and sorting different coloured balls into baskets. Some children have been very tricky and purposely mixed them up to see if the other children will notice they are in the wrong baskets!

A few reminders for next week – the parent information session for children moving up to the three year old rooms next year is being held in the Cooper room at 4pm on Monday 2nd December. Moving up morning for children transitioning to three year olds next year will be held on Tuesday 3rd December between 9.15am and 10.30am. Even if it is not your child’s day, they are welcome to join us for this time under the supervision of a parent. Christmas dress up day is being held on Wednesday 4th December – we can’t wait to spread some Christmas cheer with our outfits! Children who do not normally attend on a Wednesday are welcome to join us for our parade at 10.30am under parent supervision -  a man in a red suit and big black boots might even make an appearance!

Best wishes,

Jess, Kerry, Nicole, Emily and Rosalie

Cooper Room

With the lead up to the end of the year our room is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The children have been busy creating baubles for the tree, adding tinsel and sharing family photos of Christmas past. Through our Show and Tell sessions we have been learning how our families all celebrate Christmas in a different way. We have discovered:
·        Australia has a hot Christmas but other countries can play in the snow and build snowmen.
·        We all take turns to put the star or angel on top of the tree each year.
·        Some families open their presents on Christmas Eve and some wait until Christmas morning.
·        We all love to have lots of yummy food on Christmas day
·        Some families go to church and sing songs or play in the band
·        We have loud cracker poppers.
·        Father Christmas has lots of letters to read every night
·        Father Christmas has a big white beard cos’ where he lives it is really cold, but he must get hot when he comes to Australia cos’ we don’t need beards.

We have also been completing our gorgeous family mobiles. Please take the time to come and read all about your family and how they work together and the roles everyone has. Such delightful comments!
Next Wednesday we will be having our Cooper Christmas morning tea. Everyone is invited to come and share the morning from 9.30-10.30 (if it is not your child’s day then parents must stay). We will then move out to the Christmas dress up parade. A filled Merry Christmas festival! We wish you all a wonderful weekend – hopefully not too busy!
From Susan and Coral

Mead Room

We had a very special guest visit the Mead room this week, Joshua’s brand new puppy Nahla! Joshua’s mum Alex told us that Nahla is 8 weeks old and explained that she is a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle, called a Moodle. Nahla was very excited to have a little run around on the mat while we sat around in a circle. She went up to all the children and gave them a bit of a sniff before letting them have a pat.
James W - She’s not going to bite me
Dougal - She has very soft fur….She looks a little bit like Cleo when she was a puppy!
Charlie A - She has a little tail
Eriks - Gentle (when patting Nahla)
Jock - Do you know my dog Mac sleeps on my bed and she jumps on me
James S - She’s smelling your flowers Mrs McKenzie! (Mrs McKenzie was wearing floral pants on the day)
On Thursday we borrowed the silkworms from the Langley room because something very exciting was happening!! Five moths had hatched out of their cocoon and one was even laying eggs on the side of the container.
Jacob – The moths flapping their wings like this (flapping his arms in the air)
Angus – I can’t hear the moths flapping their wings
Joshua – the worms aren’t little anymore
Toby – the eggs are yellow

Just a few reminders about next week:
Could you please return your child’s library book if you have not done so already.
Monday: Parent Information Meeting at 4pm in the Chapple room to meet your child’d new teacher
Tuesady: Moving up morning for the children 9:15-10:45am. Mead children will spend the morning in the Chapple room with their new teachers.
Wednesday: Dress up day and Christmas parade 10:30am. Class Graduation Party 2:30pm.

Have a great weekend
Emma, Pip, Sarah and Heidi

Edgerley Room

Dear Edgerley Family and Friends,
This week we have been preparing for Christmas. It’s been an exciting time making wreaths, chains and a miniature Christmas tree using pine cones. We have loved looking at clouds and using our imaginations to make pictures:
Harrison: I see a giant castle with a giant
Max: My dragon is breathing fire!
Sebastian: There is a clock and a mouse
We have then been making collages of our cloud imagination using bubble wrap, greaseproof paper, cellophane, old dockets and lots of glue!
Congratulations to 8 of our Edgerley children who graduated on Thursday. Pauline, Florence, Sebastian, Liam, Thinura, Henry, Jackson and Hugo will all start school in January. We were very excited to help them celebrate, but we are also sad to farewell them. We can’t wait for next week when we will spend as much time playing with them as we can. Thank you to the Edgerley families who were able to attend the morning and bring in some party food. We loved singing songs to you and hearing what our 8 graduates would like to be when they grow up!
Next week proves to be a very exciting one as we enjoy our ELC Christmas Party on Wednesday and a Christmas High Tea on Friday. Mrs Rocca and Mrs Baird will be making the most of their time together (doing crazy dancing and making silly jokes) before Mrs Baird finishes up in the Edgerley room on Thursday.

Have a super weekend!

Coney, Renee, Nickarla and Katherine

Chapple Room

Dear Friends and Families,

This week we have been getting ready for our graduation, practising our performance and the ceremony.  The Chapple Children are really looking forward to their graduation and the end of the year.  We also had a formal visit to the Reception class room.  The children met their new teachers and had a lovely long play in their new classrooms.  We have another visit for the children going up to the prep school on Tuesday.  The children need to be up at the Reception classrooms at 9 am with a drink bottle, a piece of fruit, their recess and a hat.  Tuesday children  can be dropped off and signed in before 9 am and we can either walk them up or you can, but they must be signed in first.  We will collect the Tuesday children at 11.45 from the Reception classrooms.  We cannot collect any other children.    The Tuesday children who are not going to PAC will stay with Miss Giorgio and help Mrs. Lock with the Cooper children.  We will be in the OSHC room near the gym from 9am.

Wednesday is our Christmas Dress up day.  All children are welcome but if they are not Wednesday children an adult needs to stay with them.  10.30am will be our big parade followed by a special guest.  Remember this is a Christmas dress up so superheros are not allowed.

Thursday is our Chapple Graduation at 11am in the Town Square.  All children need to be at school in their ELC uniform by 10.45am so that we can get ready and you can get a good seat.  We hope to see you all there.

Aid for Philippines

Dear ELC families and friends,

As you may have heard or seen on the news recently, Typhoon Haiyan has had a devastating effect on many areas of the Philippines, especially Central Visayas where Mrs. Rocca comes from. Thankfully, her family and friends have been spared from this horrifying tragedy but it has left many of her countrymen homeless, hungry, displaced and in mourning for their lost loved ones. The Edgerley children have also begun talking about this disaster and discussing ways that they can help other people in need. Liam struck up some discussion when he mentioned about lots of water in the Philippines and that his mum is “a bit from Australia and a bit from the Philippines.” Hugo say, “There was big storms in my other country (the Philippines).”

Pauline: They don’t have any food because they had so much. We need to buy some for them and also we need some kid-a-nay beans and rice. We need to have a aeroplane and a post office and drop it with the parachute.
Oscar: This is the way to get the Philippines out. The water camed in and the Philippines is all there. So now no water can get in. That means they don’t have food. That’s the rice. We give the rice to them and we have to get money for it from the mummies and daddies. These scribbles are the suckers and they suck all of the water away.
Liam: There was a thunderstorm and there was a flood. My mum told me there was a flood. My mummy is from Adelaide and a little bit from the Philippines. She visits it. We get the money from Australia then I’ll go on the aeroplane and I’ll give people some food and we are going to drop it with the parachute case the cars can’t go there.
Henry: There’s a storm in a Philippines. Mrs Rocca’s friend helped all the people get food and put them in the box, millions. We can help them and give them food. They need it. Give them rice and fruit. Put the food in a bag and drop it from the parachute.

To support the children in their quest, PAC ELC as a small community would like to collect some money to contribute to helping the Filipinos recover and rebuild. This money will be donated to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Anthony in the Philippines, a non- profit organization from Adelaide that have built orphanages and schools in remote areas of the Philippines and are currently visiting stricken communities that are in need of food, shelter and medicines. Donations will be used to purchase the basic goods needed and will be distributed directly to the communities. We hope that you can be a part of this cause and get behind us in showing our children what kindness and humanity is all about.

A donation box will be provided in the front foyer or you can freely give your donations to your child's class teachers.

Edgerley Room

Dear Edgerley Families and Friends,
A very special week as we learned about the really big storm in the Philippines. The children heard from Liam and Hugo who have family connections there and also from Mrs Rocca. We set about creating all manner of plans to help the people:
Seb: How about we get a basket and give it to them with all the things in.
Kristian: Give them some food from our lunchboxes
Oscar: Maybe we could put bricks on the side of the Philippines and on the other side to keep the water out
Oliver; They can go to the supermarket and then we can go to the Philippines and so we can go to the dying place and give them some flowers and food
Oscar: Maybe we should get some food out of the fridge and we can give some food to them.
Henry Yang immediately went home, gathered coins from his own money box and his parents wallets and brought it in. What a thoughtful young man! Please support the Edgerley children, Mrs Rocca and the people in the Philippines through the funds drive they have set up in the foyer.
Next week we look forward to more trophy making, super hero creating and Christmas craft… and of course… THE NATIVITY!
Enjoy working on your posters for Week 7 Show and Tell!

Mead Room

Dear Parents and Friends,

In all our preparations for the Nativity next Thursday we have shared many versions of the true story of Christmas. The children have done so well with our practices in the town square and to learn the songs in readiness for the big day. We are all very excited to be wearing our pjs up on the big stage!

We had a priceless moment or two in the Mead Room this week in our home corner showing us how much our children do know about the Nativity story….

Angus – Jada’s got a baby in her tummy!
Jada – Look! (laughs)
Angus – Hide the hair. We don’t want them to know there’s a baby in there. (Angus does Jada’s top button up to hide the dolls hair)
Jada – Put the manger in there so the baby can go in there.
Jacob – I’ll get it. (While getting the manger Angus and Jacob get the Nativity books as well)
Angus - We’re going to read the books to the baby.
Jada – The baby’s coming out! Quick get the blanket ready.
Angus – Ok I’ll get it ready….
(Jacob watches on as Jada and Angus fumble a little getting the doll out from under her top)
Jada - Tuck his bottom in (Angus is trying to wrap the baby in the blanket)
Angus – There, he’s all in.
Jacob – Angus you read the small ones and I’ll read the big ones.
(Angus opens a small book and begins to ‘read’)
Angus – Ok. Once upon a time, there was a Mary, who wanted to find some treasure, but she had a baby….

We are looking forward to sharing our special performance with you all on Thursday 11am Anzac Hall!

Warmest Wishes,
Emma, Pip, Sarah and Heidi

Cooper Room

Dear Cooper families and friends,

We have continued with our Christmas celebrations and have begun to make our very own Christmas tree. The Cooper children have painted their hands and using their handprints we have formed the leaves for our tree, next we will think about what we are going to put on top. There have been lots of discussions about a shinny star... it will be a big surprise!

Continuing on the line of celebrations the children walked to the Red Centre this week to cheer on the older boys at their swimming events. There were lots of supporters and we made lots of noise shouting the names of the house teams. GO WATERHOUSE, GO COTTON, GO WATSFORD and GO TAYLOR!

Also the children have been very excited that one of our silk worms has spun his cocoon
“Dey wiggle like caterpillars” said Domenic
“Look he wiggle!” shouted Max pointing at the silk worm
“Now it a cocoon” noticed Daniel
“It’s yellow!” shouted Toby
“What’s it doing in der?” asked Archie

There are lots of caterpillars that are really big, and with the extra leaves that Luca kindly brought in, we are hoping they too will soon make cocoons. We are all very curious as to what will come out, do you know?

Love Mrs Lock and Miss Bowden

Langley Room

Dear Langley family and friends,

The ankle bones connected to the leg bone, the leg bones connected to the hip bone…This week we have started to look at our bodies and talk about what’s inside them. This conversation was sparked by a picture on Miss Kerry’s cardigan. Miss Kerry drew an outline of a body on a piece of paper and the children were able to identify lots of the body parts and what we use them for.
Hair goes there, some spike hair – Angus RR
A belly button – Bernie
Belly – Elle
Knees – Brooke
Our feet go on the floor – Angelina
There leg – Tate
That’s a skeleton – Sylas
Da nose – Scarlett B
It’s your love (talking about the heart) – Bernie

To explore this further we have started tracing around our bodies and painting the bones on them. We will continue with this body exploration next week, examining x-rays, skeletons and body puzzles and collaging skeleton outlines of our bodies.

We have also enjoyed watching our silk worms take the next stage of their life cycle – spinning cocoons. Using crepe paper and toilet rolls, we have even been able to spin our own cocoons around our silk worms. We are eagerly anticipating what is going to come out of the cocoons, is it going to be a baby dinosaur or a butterfly or a frog?! We can’t wait to see what happens next week…

Don’t forget our Christmas Nativity performance next Thursday 21st November at 11am. We have been practising very hard and preparing our costumes and look forward to sharing this special morning with you.

Best wishes,

Jess, Kerry, Nicole and Emily

Congratulations to Julia and Jaran Blethyn on the arrival of Isla on Tuesday 5/11/13 . A beautiful sister for Scarlett (Langley Room)

Illness'

There have been a few cases of Gastro at the centre over the last week , please make sure you follow centre policy and keep your child at home for 24 hours after symptoms cease to prevent spreading it.

There have also been a few ELC children with Croup over the last couple of weeks so here is some information about it :
Croup is very common in young children, most often in children under five years old. It’s usually associated with a cold .

Causes

Croup is an infection that causes inflammation of the windpipe (trachea) and the vocal cords (voice box). The inflammation is usually caused by the same viruses that cause the common cold.

Symptoms

Your child will usually have symptoms of a cold before the onset of croup, including a runny nose, sore throat, fever and irritability. He then develops a harsh, barking cough, sometimes a hoarse voice, and then noisy breathing (stridor).
The noisy breathing and cough are usually worse at night. They can also get worse if your child gets upset. In most children, the symptoms improve over a few days then disappear.

Treatment

Most children with croup don’t need treatment. You can manage the symptoms in exactly the same way as for a cold.
It’s important to try and keep your child calm, because your child can have more trouble breathing if she’s upset, frightened or stressed.
Croup is most commonly caused by a virus, so antibiotics won’t work. Antibiotics treat only bacterial infections.Your child might need a three-day course of oral prednisolone or dexamethasone (steroids) if he has more severe symptoms. This treatment can reduce his symptoms quickly by helping reduce the swelling in his windpipe. It has no long-term consequences.
A few children with croup need to go to hospital for observation, to ensure that their windpipes don’t get blocked. While in hospital, your child might initially receive adrenaline in the form of mist (nebulised adrenaline). This reduces the swelling in the windipe very quickly while the steroids work.

Prevention

There’s no way to prevent children from getting croup.

Face Painter Needed

We are looking for someone who would be able to do face painting for some of our children on the morning of the Nativity play from around 9.30-10.30 am. If you are available or know of someone else willing to do it could you please let Mrs Dry know asap,

Thankyou

Chapple Room

Hello Families and Friends,

This week the Chapple children have decided that we would write the blog together,
 ‘What’s the blog?’ asked William
‘The blog is something so that your mummy and daddy know what you want’ explained Jacob
‘A blog something when you go somewhere and your Mum and Dad print it out’ Abhi said
‘When your Mum and Daddy knows something’ offered Leonardo
‘So your mummy and daddy can know what you did, what you played with and if you had a good day’ added Abhi
‘A blog is something that you (teacher) write in to tell the mummy’s daddy’s, grandmas and great grandmas what you did and if you had a good day’ Jacob said

So what did we do this week?

‘We did PE, we played with bouncy balls’ Christian said
‘And we played tennis’  added Abhi
‘I liked the puzzles, it’s my favourite thing in the whole wide world.  I’m an expert at them.’  said Leonardo
‘Outside me Hugo, Raph and Leonardo were playing hide and seek and Marcus played a little bit’  Lucas explained
‘I was playing a game called “looking for diamonds” and if you find the most diamonds you win.  One day I found 2 diamonds’ Marcus G told us
‘I went on the playground, the outside playground’ Hugo said
‘Racing to the red park’ Markis exclaimed
‘And racing to the black score board’ Marcus G added
‘Markis Kallos’ mummy she looked at the things at the front of our tummies, our heart and she looked at and we got to look at the blood coming out of the heart’ Christian explained
‘We got to look at Miss Amelia’s baby’s brain’  said Abhi remembering that Miss Amelia luckily was at school on Wednesday visiting the Mead children.
‘It was kind of cool. Markis Kallos’ mummy looked at my kidneys.  She saw red and blue it’s the blood’ Asterios said
‘We really liked the hospital’ Amaia offered
‘We had to deliver cards to Mr. Andary’ James W said
‘We were like Post men!’ Asterios laughed
‘We went to the big school.  Mrs. O’Hara’ Seb Mac remembered
‘We had a big school visit , I liked that we had to go to the playground’ Oscar recalled

We did have a very busy week.  We’d like to thank Leah Kallos for coming in with her portable ultrasound and showing us our insides and Miss Amelia’s baby.  We are certain to be tennis pros with all our hard work during PE lessons.  Some of the children have a mean hit and we have to duck out the way of the tennis balls!!  Nativity practises are in full swing now as we gear up for our performance in week 6, don’t forget to bring in your costumes.  The basket is waiting on top of the lockers.  And our excitement to be big school boys and girls is definitely growing with each school visit.  Next week we will be going to Chapel with the Thursday Children, Chapel starts at 9am.  It is important that we are all at school by 8:45 on Thursday.  Miss Veltmeyer goes on her holiday to Fiji on Wednesday for 1 week and we will have Mrs. Nacca while she is away.  Bon voyage Miss Veltmeyer!  (lucky duck!)

One last note that we all agreed on:-

‘We love our mummies and daddies!’ said Lucas

Have a great weekend!

Juliana, Pamela and the Chapple Children.

Edgerley Room

Dear Edgerley Families and Friends,
This week we have enjoyed talking about our family members. We have even been able to group them into various types of family members: cousins, nannies, mums, grandies, pets etc. We enjoyed talking about why we love our family members and why they are special to us. We had a lovely sharing time about our mums:
Ammar: I love her because she takes me to the park and she pays lots of money to go to the swimming and she talks to me so much.
Louis: Because she reads me books.
Jack: Because she hugs me.
Harry L: I love my mum.
Gabby: She gives me cuddles and perfume and holds my hand.
Edward: She just play with me about the toys.
Liam: Because I like to play Superman games with her.
Oliver K: Mummy kisses me.
Max: She brings me to the playground and swimming.
Archie: She gives me a bath.
Harrison: She snuggles me in bed.
Spencer: She plays football with me.
Oliver H: She hugs me and takes me to McDonalds.
Sebastian: I love her because she gives me a bath and we like to play.

We hope to hear more about the other mums next week! We’ve enjoyed hearing about your family holidays and we look forward to learning more about how we can help our family. Watch out, you may just have a little gardener, a keen dish washer or an avid chef showing you some new skills!
Next week we explore our interests in superheroes, dinosaurs, Team Rocc and Christmas!
Have a restful weekend and we look forward to another great week in the Edgerley Room,
