Edgerley Room

Dear Edgerley Family and Friends,

Congratulations to you all on your Graduation! What big boys and girls you are and so ready and eager to go to school! We know you’ll miss us and we will miss you all too. Please pop in every now and then – we would LOVE to see you! You will all achieve great things and we loved hearing just what you would like to be when you grow up! If you set your mind to it, you’ll be unstoppable!

With much love and great memories,

Mrs Rocca, Ms Giorgio and Mrs Baird

Chapple Room

Dear Chapple Room parents and friends,
We have had such a fantastic term. It’s almost a shame to be saying goodbye to term two, but I think we are all ready for a three week break! This week we have explored using musical instruments to make music. After enjoying our music sessions with Mrs B, it was great fun to be able to experiment with instruments. We explored beat, rhythm and making different chords. Mrs Schmidt learned some songs on the ukulele and we helped sing the songs and keep the beat. It was great fun and a good way for us to learn the difference between making noise and making music. Several children decided to bring in their own instruments from home and share them with the class. It was a wonderful learning journey for us all, especially for those children who are musically inclined. We are endeavouring to send a copy of our orchestral concert to you all.

Chapple Room Team

Mrs Schmidt will be going on Maternity Leave from August 16th . She will be replaced by Mrs Juliana Giorgio who will take the class until the end of 4th Term.

Cooper Room

Dear Parents,
It has been a lovely last week in the Cooper Room. We have had lots of fun cooking our favourite foods and playing together in the sunshine. On Wednesday afternoon we shared  time with our families celebrating all the wonderful fun we have had over the past term. On our last day together the children painted beautiful Autumn trees on the windows. A beautiful memory ... we will miss you all and have loved working with your gorgeous children.  Thank you for your generous gifts, we feel very spoilt. We know they will all love their time in the Edgerley Room.
Best Wishes

Mead Room

Dear Parents and Friends,
We have been busy following a specific interest in our room over the past couple of weeks. The children started to show an interest in making fishing rods, so together we set up a pond with different types of fish, blue cellophane, a bucket nearby and a few homemade rods. Much exciting dramatic play and rich fishy language began!
To continue our interest in fishing, Mrs Cooper brought in a Salmon trout for us to observe and then cook. Together we looked at different features of the fish, such as the fins, the scales, the gills and lungs and tail. The children were fascinated…
Harry M: He’s died!
James S: Look he has a mouth.
Charlotte: Where’s the blood?
Angus: Why’s it got blood on it and why didn’t they leave him alive?
We discussed that when we hurt ourselves, there’s blood inside us that comes out just like the fish. When they are preparing fish to sell they make a slit under the fish and have to clean out the insides of the fish. Then the fish are ready for people to take home and cook!
James S: There’s a flipper.
Alexander: He got spots!
Alec: Why does her have lungs?
We talked about how fish breathe through the water and that they need gills rather than a nose like us.
Angus: Can we see through his mouth to his tummy?
Everyone had a look but couldn’t see very far into his tiny mouth.
Then Mrs Cooper cut up some slices of lemon and little bits of butter and we wrapped the fish in alfoil. Mrs Sue helped us cook it in her big oven.
Together we watched a “For the Juniors” DVD about what happens to fish and where they come from. The children were really interested to revisit some of the ideas we had been exploring about fish.
Alec: I saw a fish market.
Alex: What a fish market for?
James S: Dere(there) was snapper!
Jock: Big fish! When he saw the big tuna fish.
Angus: Can you buy really big fish?
Together we have developed a class fish shop too so the children have been able to build an indepth understanding of where fish come from and how they come to us on our plates!
This week we have welcomed Mrs Heidi Kerr in the Mead Room to provide additional support for our children on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
We look forward to continuing our learning journey together next term. Miss Amelia and Miss Sarah will be with the children during the holidays. Please enjoy your child’s Portfolio during the holidays and we ask that they come back in Week 1 Term 3.

Kind Regards, Emma, Pip, Amelia and Heidi

We are planning some fun wet weather activities next week so please pack named wet weather clothes/boots etc in a separate plastic bag for your child next week
Thankyou.

Langley Room

Dear Langley family and friends,

Wow, what a busy last week of Term 2 we have had! We have enjoyed tasting some different cheeses that children have brought in from home including blue vein cheese, bocconcini and maasdam. Some were a hit and others got some interesting reactions!
It might be stale – Alexander (blue cheese)
I don’t like it – Elle (blue cheese)
Taste nice, creamy – Angus RR (brie)
It tastes like holey cheese – Nathan (maasdam)

We have also been discussing and creating our favourite meals on paper plates –
I like fruit on a plate. I draw a watermelon, that’s nanas (bananas) and strawberries – Knox
Pizza, not tomato, cheese, just cheese. I want tomato on my pizza – Harry CH
Spaghetti and sauce. Pasta! Sauce! – Alexander
I like icecreams, pink. Dat my pink icecream – Scarlett B
Strawberry and melon. I like that melon, that tiny little melon. In the plants, the melons growing. This is to get the melon to grow, grow really high. We have plants at our house – Harry F

The Langley room have also been preparing some future tennis stars! We have been developing our eye hand coordination skills by practicing hitting the suspended tennis balls. It’s been a great social experience as well as being a whole lot of fun! We were also lucky enough to go for a walk to the big boy’s senior school library for an interactive story telling session with Mrs Harris and one of the big boys. We heard one of our favourite stories, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and heard a new one called Alexander’s Outing.

Please note that during the three week holiday period, the Langley class will be relocated to the Edgerley room while our bathroom and kitchen are renovated in preparation for the centre expansion. The Edgerley room is the second classroom on your right as you enter the centre. What an exciting holiday adventure!

Best wishes,

Jess, Kerry, Nicole and Emily

Hidden Noise Talents

Do you have a hidden noise talent?? We would love for you to come and share it with the ELC children as part of our Noiseworks unit of inquiry next term.
For example playing the spoons, using power tools, cracking knuckles, singing, tap dancing, playing instruments……
Please let classroom staff know if you have a noise talent you would like to share!
Thanks,

ELC staff

Recyclable Materials

Dear family and friends,

Our unit of inquiry next term is Noiseworks. As part of this inquiry we will be making musical instruments with the children. Can we please ask you to gather and bring to the ELC recyclable materials that could be used for this experience, for example – glass jars, plastic bottles and bottle tops, plastic containers, large tins such as those that baby formula comes in. Please do not bring in cardboard items or egg cartons as we still have an over supply of these in our store rooms! Please pass on your recyclable resources to classroom staff.
We would also like any children's gumboots or raincoats that you have finished with for our dress up corner.

Thanks,

ELC staff

Edgerley Room

Dear Edgerley Parents and Friends,

We’re almost there (sniff, sniff). We look forward to celebrating the Edgerley children’s Graduation with you on Thursday at 11am in the Town Square. We have had a lovely week reflecting on our time in the ELC and looking forward to our time at school. Show and Tell has been very exciting as we’ve shared school hats, lunch boxes, backpacks, pencil cases and sports house t-shirts. It seems like we’ve all enjoyed visiting our new schools and meeting our new class mates.

The Thursday children happily talked about school life and what they’re looking forward to:

Caleb: Cause I like reading the Jack and the Beanstalk book
Isaac: I like to get some favourite friends that go to my different Kindy
Sebi: I like to play with the trains there
Archie: I love playing in tha farm area
Bailey: I like playing with all the toys and I like my new teacher and it’s Ms Fahey
Bruno: I like playing in the playground and playing chasey. You get to have a sausage roll and apple and biscuits
Isaac: I really like my teacher because I get to go to my sister’s school. My classroom, I get to see Miss Tucker
Caleb: I like playing in the hardware shop too. You need to bring your lunchbox – with brain food and lunch and the afternoon tea
Jacob: You have to take a special t-shirt. You stay in your team from PAC but the t-shirt has a dragon on the shirt
Max: I like playing with the train tracks
Alec: My new classroom is quite high to all the other classrooms. It’s got a dinosaur museum with bones in them
Mrs Baird: How are you feeling about going to school?
Sebi: Good
Caleb: Exciting
Isaac: Bouncing up and down
Alec: It’s exciting and good
Bailey: Good
Mrs Baird: What are you going to miss about the ELC?
Sebi: Painting
Alec: You and Mrs Rocca
Isaac: Miss nothing
Caleb: I will miss you and Mrs Rocca
Bailey: I’ll miss all my teachers
Bruno: I like playing the swings so I’ll miss them, the ELC ones

Thank you to the parents who joined us on our Number Hunt on Monday – we couldn’t believe how many numbers there were in the street – let alone at Bunnings!

We wish you all the very best Edgerley! Parents, we hope to get the chance to speak with you at the Graduation, but we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for being a wonderful group of parents with a bunch of gorgeous children – we will miss you all! Don’t forget to come back and visit us!

(The Friday children have really been enjoying sharing the first story in Enid Blyton's The Circus Collection together, Unfortunately we will not be able to finish before the children move to Reception. They have been enjoying it so much it seems a shame that they will miss out on the ending, if your child is interested perhaps you would like to keep reading the story with them.)

Love Ms Giorgio, Mrs Rocca and Mrs Baird

Mathematical Thinking
Throughout the year I have been involved in an action research project regarding the documentation of the mathematical curriculum in a play based environment. As part of my research I read an article on Children’s Mathematical Thinking by Emily Ashton, published on the Early Childhood Centre for Research and Development Group website.
It is a brilliant article which fully explains the importance of a play based environment and the amazing learning that takes place when driven by the child’s own ideas, interests and investigations. It discusses the importance of the block corner, which is often underestimated in its importance in the learning process.
Authentic, meaningful play happens often in the block corner. Children experiment with the concepts of weight, size, order, pattern and shape in building projects initiated by their own ideas and interests. It is also a great social activity for children who work with others on collaborative projects.
The article also discusses the importance of literature in the mathematics curriculum. The Chapple children have really enjoyed revisiting many of the classic fairy tales throughout the year. Goldilocks, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Pigs have been very popular. They have also provided the perfect provocation for mathematical investigations into number, size, order and sorting and classifying. All these concepts are very important in forming the foundation of mathematical concepts that will be built on in the more formal school curriculum. If your child enjoys the block corner, or you are looking for ways to understand your child’s learning and development, this article is well worth a read.
We are looking forward to a busy last week next week. We have lots planned! Have a great weekend.
Thanks,
Chapple Room Team

Cooper Room

Dear Parents,

The Cooper Room has been turned into a Pizza Parlour! The children have been mixing and kneading their dough and then creating the most amazing Pizzas. The children have really mastered the idea of creating different ingredients to make it taste right. We have all tasted the delights of the Pizza Parlour and walked away being very happy customers.
We also spent time looking at sweetcorn. The children found sweetcorn in  the boarders vegetable patch and then had a wonderful time peeling away the husks. We steamed sweetcorn and ate it straight off the cob! So sweet and tasty and then used dried corn to make popcorn. What fun! Next week we will use canned corn to create some yummy savoury muffins.
Many children have also been busy at the Hama beads table. Using very small beads to create interesting patterns and designs and then melting them together. The deep concentration and commitment to finishing the designs has been amazing and the children are always excited to see their new creation.
We hope you all enjoy a lovely weekend and are ready for a busy last week of term.
Kind regards

Susan and Coral

Mead Room

What an exciting time we have had in the Mead Room this week. The children have continued their exploration of fishing and even made a fish shop with measuring scales, many types of fish including tommy roughs, salmon, snapper, crabs and yabbies. We have a deliciously yummy icecream parlour that even has sprinkles and bubble gum icecream! On Thursday Mrs McKenzie made popcorn with the children.  Today we have really enjoyed hearing from a real farmer Ben Macdonald (Charlie Mac’s Dad) Ben came in to talk to us about his family’s farm “Blackwood Park”. He kindly showed us many photos about his sheep and cattle property. Then Ben let us hold some wool, cattle and sheep tags, lupins and hay. The children, especially Charlie were in raptures as they found out about the farm! Here are some of their comments…
Tom: What’s a farmer?
Angus: Do you have any chickens? You know that I brought an egg for my show and tell!
Jacob: I’ve played on a hay bale before.
Alec: He looks after the sheep (Kerrie the sheepdog)
Alex: I saw one (a truck) with pigs on it
Angus: Sheep go in there too.
Jacob: I have some sheep at my house. That might be a Daddy cow.
Olympia: (The wool) feels very, very comfortable.

Thank you so much Ben for coming in today. The children have loved it!
Thank you to all our families for giving us such a rich source of discussion with your child’s show and tell this term. It has given our unit “Paddock to Plate” such depth and interest. We look forward to welcoming Joshua’s Mum and Grandma to make pirogi with us on Monday next week.
Warm Regards,

Emma, Pip and Amelia

Langley Room

Dear Langley families and friends,

This week we found out that not all milk comes from cows. We tried four different types of milk. Rice milk, soya milk, dairy milk and chocolate flavoured milk. First we tried the rice milk, Miss Emily showed us the carton and then using our Samsung tablets she showed us pictures of rice and how the milk was made from it.

“Milk” – Domenic
“It’s made from eggs?” – Knox
“This is rice milk, it’s made from rice” said Miss Emily
“Rice” – Patrick
“Rice? I don’t know!” – Nathan
“It looks different to cow milk” – Domenic
“I love it” – Alexander
“Yummy” – Angus R-R
“I don’t love it” – Harry F
“Yuck” said Sterling as he sipped and screwed up his face, shaking his head.
“This one is soy milk” Miss Emily showed us what soy beans look like then we tasted the soy milk.
“I like it” – Angelina
“It yummy” – Knox
“It taste better than rice” – Alexander
“I like soy” – Toby
“Let’s have a drink” – Alexander
We then tried dairy milk, Miss Emily showed us a picture of someone milking a cow.
“He’s trying to take the milk out his bottom” – Alexander
“Milk comes from a milk cow” – Ansh
“I like cow milk” – Harry F
Then we tried chocolate flavoured milk!
“It comes from a normal cow” – Alexander
“Then you put chocawat (chocolate) in it” – Domenic
“It’s a white cow” – Harry F
“Choccy” – Harry J H
“This one is good for me” – Harry F
“It’s like custard” – Toby
“That’s good for my tummy but the other ones aren’t” – Harry F
“I like the chocolate one” – Sterling
We asked the children which milk they liked best.
“I like chocolate best” – Caitlyn
“Rice milk was yucky” – Nathan

It was interesting watching the children’s reactions to the different flavours, experiencing something new. Next week we would like to extend on this further by trying some different types of cheeses. If your child has a favourite type of cheese or you’ve got something a bit different to taste, please send it in with your child next week.

Enjoy your weekend!

Best wishes,

Kerry, Emily, Rosalie, Jess and Nicole

Congratulations to Cassandra and Roger Papalia on the  arrival of Roman on 23rd April this year, a much adored brother for Chloe (Edgerley Room) and Jada (Mead Room)

Uniforms

Dear Parents,
Previously children were expected to wear only maroon pants; however we have reviewed and now changed that policy due to the difficulties with purchasing. Please note that as of immediately we will support children wearing neutral (navy, grey, black, beige, maroon and denim) coloured pants with no stripes, brands or markings etc as part of the ELC uniform. All other aspects of uniform remain unchanged.
Kind Regards,

Sean Watt

Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

There has been a case of this virus within the centre this week . Symptoms are a mild temperature ,sore throat, runny nose or cough and blisters on the hands, feet and mouth (and nappy area) Please keep an eye out for this , children must remain at home until all blisters have dried.

Edgerley Room

Dear Edgerley Families and Friends,

Thanks Cleo (Emerson's mum) for coming in and making Apricot Balls with us! We loved getting our hands into the sticky mixture! A very sweet delight. We have LOVED bringing in something sweet for our Show and Tell. In fact, it has helped us wonder about good sugars, bad sugars, how sugar is made, brown sugar, white sugar and so on! We had a good look at how much sugar goes into a can of Coke. We started off imagining that we could eat 1 teaspoon of sugar, then 2, then 3 and before we knew it we were starting to feel very sick. We counted 13 teaspoons of sugar !

We've enjoyed Ms Fahey's visits. She is the PAC school boys' new teacher. She has really had a fabulous time getting to know all the children. We are looking forward to our special mornings with her.

Transition Visit next week: please refer to the note sent to you from Mr Neil Andary with all the details. However a reminder that ALL Edgerley boys (including Edgerley boys who don’t normally attend on Tuesdays) will assemble in Edgerley at 8:45am. Mrs Baird and Mrs Rocca will take the boys up to their new classrooms. Mrs Rocca will stay with the boys. Mrs Baird will return to Edgerley with the children who are not attending PAC Prep School. These children will have the very important job of helping the Cooper children enjoy their Transition Visit. Don’t forget to pack your son’s drink bottle and a small container of fruit or vegetables to eat with his new class.
Don't forget to come and try the local delicacies at the Edgerley Bakery! Thanks Annie (Bruno's mum) for donating many of our materials! We specialise in sprinkle donuts, cupcakes and croissants!
See you all next week!

Chapple Room

We had a great time during our Show and Share morning on Thursday . Showing off our work gave us all a sense of pride and it was lovely looking back at how far we’ve come so far this year. Some of the children have worked their way over from the Langley Room, which showed an amazing journey ! The children enjoyed sharing their food with the class, but the best part by far was slowly sampling all the delicious goodies that others had brought in. It was interesting hearing each child’s description of their food and how it got from paddock to plate.

Seb M - Sausages rolls, my mum made them with some this (points to pastry). I'm going to have a taste of one.
Markis – There is meat, there it is inside of the middle
Seb Mac – It comes from a cow. Cause (because) it’s a roll. Crust, it's crust on the outside. Sugar is the green stuff. It's green sugar.
Bayley – Cookies, chocolate chip cookies. We got flour from the wheat. Mayple syrup. Choplept (chocolate) from cocoa.
Liam – It has a hole in it and you push right into it. They are sprinkle cupcakes.  We do eat them but at bedtime we don’t eat them. Everyone all eat those cupcakes.
Sebastian v – Fairy bread. With milk. We had the milk then we put it in the butter. And 100 and 1000’s. I don’t know (where they come from). It's on bread.
James W – I got sugar in them and butter and milk. Oh and eggs from chickens. Milks from cows. And sugar, where does sugar come from? It comes from a sugar cane. This animals are dangerous. Like snakes and lions they do eat you. These are from the supermarket (points to patty pan and animals).
Izabella – Its hummos and bread. Its makes of chickpeas. So you put, well you mash it up. Its Zatiki, and cucumber and garlic and sour cream it in. there is celery and cucumber. And carrot.
Markis C – These are my new cupcakes they have tatanas (sultanas) in them. They come from the bakery. Just tatanas. No flour or meat. And eggs, we made the eggs into cupcakes. And if you love it you can eat it!
Christian – It’s got raspberries in it. There is milk and eggs. I got it from the cow. They come from (rasberries) the bushes. No but there is eggs and milk.
Samuel – Chippies. They are just plain ones with a bit of salt. Well I got it from a big packets and there is still more. And the packet came from the petrol station. I think they I don’t know how they came in. They are like this kind of colour inside and when you eat them they stay in the same colour on the inside. It’s not healthy. I don’t think these chips have potatoes in them. I don’t know where they came from or how they got made.
Abhi – They have letters on them. I used milk and butter, my mum used that.
Asterios – They are jelly beans (smarties) oh no wait they are smarties. And the rice crackers have rice in them. And cheese comes from a cow.

Thank you to all the parents who took the time out of their busy schedules to provide some food, but also to come and share the morning with their child. It was very special!

Cooper Room

Dear Parents,

We have had a wonderful week testing  and strengthening many of our fine motor skills. From threading to writing our name, drawing pictures, making food in the Cooper Restaurant and creating our own pot of confetti. The children have also loved the opportunity to try out some new apps on our computers. These involve tracing , following instructions, dragging images and completing our personal jigsaws. We also tested our power of observation through creating some amazing self portraits  - wow, how we have changed and grown! We have created a display of the beautiful Cooper Room class. Please come and take a look. Many children also painted a still life of a flower arrangement from Miss Bowden. We asked the children to paint the flowers so when the flowers finally died we would all be able to remember them. The gorgeous paintings certainly will not let us forget them.
One of the favourite activities for the week was creating our favourite meal! The children have collaged their dish for all to see on our picnic rug. On Friday we made the most popular meal – pizza! The children wrote their shopping  list, visited the Cooper Room shop to purchase their ingredients and then set about making the pizza, base and all. What a delicious treat to end the week.

Kind regards

Susan and Coral

Mead Room

Dear Parents and Friends,
This week we have embraced our interest in fruit and vegetables by making some delicious fruit juice. A big thank you to Dougal for bringing in some juicy oranges for us to use! We used a hand juicer, an electric juicer and then today we used a juice fountain.

Here are some comments of our experiences...

Charlie M: This is very nice!
Angus: That's the bin... all the scraps go there.
Boasi: I want some more!
Charlie A: I can taste the orange.
Joshua: We put the fruit in it all chopped it up.
Charlie A: It made juice.
Charlie M: We had to crunch the fruit up to get he juice.
Angus: It tastes sour!

We have many more hands on cooking experiences to enjoy before the end of term! Next week we are looking forward to introducing another shop into our learning environment... do come and buy either an icecream or a fish!!

Kind Regards,
Emma , Pip and Amelia

Dear Langley family and friends,
We have had another busy week this week furthering our investigations into Paddock to Plate. We were lucky enough on Thursday to be able to go to Plant 13 restaurant on the bus – thanks Becki and Cole for having us!
The children were very excited to board the big bus at school. With seat belts on, we set off on our adventure. We were able to spot all sorts of things out the window – planes, trucks, buses, diggers and cranes! Upon arrival at Plant 13, Harrison’s daddy greeted us and showed us through to the community garden. There were all sorts of different fruits and vegetables growing and we even got a chance to plant some kale in one of the empty plots. We prepared the soil and divided out the seedlings before digging little holes to place them in, pressing down the soil around them and watering them carefully.
We then ventured into the restaurant where we got to taste some of the produce from the garden. We had sweet potato chips, kale, scones with jam and even some chocolate milk! We then moved to the big grown up area in the restaurant where Chef Alana showed us how to make fruit people with chopped up fruit and tooth picks. We all had a go at making our own fruit people before eating the delicious fruit. By the time we got back on the bus to go back to school, we were all very full of food and exhausted from our big adventure !
As we woke up from our sleeps we created art images of our morning and reflected on what we had done -
We tried to do our seat belt. We sit down and the bus was trying to drive. Chocolate milk and scones – Ansh
I flanted (planted) it. I flant some weeds. It’s a fruit man – Domenic
We went on the bus to the restaurant. We made men out of fruit. Dat was a bit funny – Patrick
We went around dis way, dis way and den dat way and around the round about we go to a westawant. We STOP! – Harrison R
On bu (bus) to Da-ee’s (Daddy’s) work – Harrison T
We went left, white. We met the man, the daddy. We went to the westaurant. We went for dwinks. We don’t eat the dirt, it’s yucky. We plant in the dirt. I had scones on my face – Sterling

Best wishes,

Langley Room

Dear Langley Families,
This week in the Langley room we have continued to discuss our unit of inquiry… Paddock to Plate. We have spent time making yummy fresh home-made bread and even made our own butter by shaking cream and marbles in a jar. Many of us were very surprised by the results and got a great workout. The children have also enjoyed exploring a freshly sheared fleece. We were able to touch and explore the fleece.
Miss Jess held up the fleece and asked the children what it was and what we might get from a sheep.
Bacon- Angus RR
Jumper- Lachlan
Broccoli- Angus RR
Beans- Clementine
It wool, it wool- Sterling
It gots jumper- Jaanav
A sheep- Angus RR
“What does it feel like?” asked Miss Jess

Wool- Lachlan
Miss Kerry then showed us how to finger knit with the ball of wool and made some beautiful bracelets for us to wear. Mr Rob noticed what we were doing and told us how his wife Hazel uses wool at home to knit hats He kindly brought them in to show us – how wonderful for us to see the whole journey of wool !
We hope you all enjoy your long weekend.

Can we please just remind everybody to make sure that their child is bringing a bag to the ELC each day. Their bag needs to contain two sets of spare clothes and a drink bottle of water – Thanks!
