Edgerley

Dear Edgerley Parents,

What a wonderful week we have had for the first week of the term. You may have noted our cultural focus on Chinese New Year celebrations in preparation for our lion visit next week. Don’t forget to look up as you walk through our classroom door to see our red ribbons designed to scare any monsters away and to wish for luck for the new year. If you look closely you’ll note that some of us have even attempted to write Chinese characters.

This week we began a project about the gifts we receive from trees. We started by observing trees around the campus grounds and finally settled on illustrating the Morton Bay figs at the front of the main building. We discovered that the figs gave fruit (for birds! Not for us!) and leaves to give us shade. Next week we plan to try some figs from trees that people can eat from. I wonder what they will taste like. We also observed the pine trees beside the back oval and discovered that they gave seeds and cones. Sebastien brought some interesting squiggly bark from the park and we discovered that the tree had provided a home and some wiggly roads for insects. Come in and have a look at this interesting bark on top of the building cupboard.

We also began to talk with each other and share ideas about balancing. Miss C taught us a new balance in yoga called the dog table pose. It’s tricky and takes concentration, ask us, we can show you how to do it.

We also spoke briefly about our families in preparation for our work on family trees. Please help us out by completing the family tree sheets that we sent home via e-mail on Thursday. If you would like a hard copy don’t hesitate to ask.

And finally please help us out by adding your ideas about harmony to the board by the sign on sheet. We would like to use your ideas to stimulate discussion with the children in preparation for Harmony day.

Phew! What a jam packed week, can’t wait to see what next week brings!
