Mattingley

Dear Mattingley Families and Friends,

The children continue to enjoy playing with the musical instruments in our room. We have started learning two new songs for mat time, the Lycra Song and The Drum Shaker Song. Both of these songs encourage the children to copy the actions described in the song which require both gross and fine motor skills. The Drum Shaker song also provides each child the opportunity to experiment with the musical instruments. The Lycra Song was a really fun group experience.

William : That was really crazy.
Alannah: It was really shaky and stretchy.

We have also noticed that many children are enjoying cooking in our home corner and in the sandpit. The cooking of chocolate cake appears to be a frequent occurrence. During Tuesday’s group time we sat down and thought about what we need to make a chocolate cake.

Miss Ruggiero: What do we need to make a chocolate cake?
Kashaev: Chocolate!
Alannah: I think we can put on things that belong on a cake like little chocolate balls.
Clementine: Real sugar and eggs.
Angus: Colouring

As we talk about cooking we are incorporating both numeracy and literacy. Some of the language and literacy that is looked at in cooking experiences encourages children to identify and utilise language that is used specifically for the purpose of cooking.

We are also continually exploring the idea that symbols are used to convey meanings as we look at lists of ingredients needed and the symbols used to convey quantities.

Numeracy presents itself in cooking experiences as we look at measurement, quantities and comparative language. These concepts will be continually explored as we interact with the children in the kitchen corner and sandpit as well as cooking some real food as a class.

Have a great weekend,
Cass and Liana
