Cooper

Hi Cooper families,

We have had a very colourful week in the Cooper room this week. Sparked by the children’s strong interest in rainbows, we have had numerous conversations on colours, in particular - colour mixing. Across the week, we have engaged in a range of hands on experiments to test what happens when we mix 2 primary colours together. Before we started the experiments, we hypothesised about what we thought would happen to the colours once we mixed them together. This is the dialogue taken from our coloured playdough mixing experiment:

Miss GilbertWhat do you think will happen when we mix the red playdough with the blue playdough?
Toby – It will turn pink.
Poppy – No it won’t, it will make purple.
Thomas – Red and blue make purple.
Nicholas – Red.
Angus – Green and black.
Ollie Chong – It blue. It red.
Grace – It blue, it red. It make blue.
Lucy – Its blue and pink. It will make brown.
Alonso – Blue. Pink.

The children then had the change to squish and mix the playdough in their hands. As they squeezed the playdough together they noticed that it started to change colour.

Nicholas – I did squish mine. I keep going.
Grace – it makes purple
Thomas – I’m making purple. Look Miss Gilbert I’m making purple.
George – It’s turning. It’s turning purple.
Angus – Mine has changed
Toby – Blue and red make purple.
Nicholas – It was red. Purple.

Through these experiments, the children are building their knowledge of colour and are able to identify a range of different colours. The children are beginning to make a strong connection about the way the primary colours work together to make new colours.

Miss C and I have both noticed the strong relationships that are forming between the children in the Cooper room. It has been wonderful to watch the children engage in experiences together, sharing ideas and building on each other’s knowledge.

We learnt a new pose in yoga this week called the Cobra pose. Many of the children are now able to demonstrate each pose independently. Well done!

Love Miss Gilbert and Miss C
