Dear Parents,
What a busy term
it has been! It's hard to believe that 10 weeks is nearly behind us and we are
about to enter the 2 week Spring Holiday Program! The children have
done an amazing job settling in to their new Edgerley environment and have
risen to the challenge of older 4 year old expectations and activities.
We have continued
with our symmetrical investigations by turning our hand to painting symmetrical
patterns. Once we had attempted to paint our perfectly symmetrical
artworks, the children realised that if they folded their piece of paper in
half and then opened it up they would produce a perfectly symmetrical
artwork. This caused great excitement! We also learnt the meaning of a new word
'assymetrical'. Once the children cottoned on to this, they used it liberally
in reference to everything asymmetrical around the Edgerley room! We have even
been trying to show symmetry with our bodies, although Aiden and Aaron (being
identical twins) would be the best candidates for this!
In preparation
for Sports Day on Thursday we have been practicing group games and running
races. The children all know which coloured house they are in, and are excited
about participating on the day. Parents are very welcome to join us for the
Health Hustle on Thursday at 9am in the Prep School Gym.
The arrival of a
baby stick insect has caused quite a stir amongst the children. We will keep our
new resident for observation, and record the changes in its development that we
see taking place. As the children observed our new friend, Karl spotted some
tiny eggs which we will continue to keep an eye on. As we brainstormed
what we already know about stick insects, we discovered we knew quite a
lot.
They climb sticks
- Stirling
It other animals
are trying to attack the stick insect it will camouflage into a stick -
Nicholas V
It the tail cuts
off it will grow a new one - Will A
They eat leaves -
Lewis
You need to keep
the leaves in water to keep them nice - Will A
They actually
change to a new colour when the bird comes. Then the bird thinks 'that's a rock
lying' and it flies away! - Karl
We then watched a
short documentary on stick insects and learnt that not all stick insects look
like sticks! Some look like leaves and some look like green beans. What
amazing creatures.
Best wishes,
