Mattingley

Dear Mattingley Families and Friends,

This week in the Mattingley room we have been exploring the sensation of touch. The children enjoyed playing with slime, shaving cream and paint bags that were out for them to feel.

Miss Ruggiero: How does the shaving cream feel?

Hudson - Soft

Ruby - Good. It feels not cold. It’s nice and warm.

Mack - It’s sticky

Elsa - It feels slobbery

Nathan -Cold and it feels hard.

Miss Ruggiero - What does the slime feel like?

Clementine - Playdough

Hudson - It looks like playdough but it’s not. It’s slime.

Ruby - Wow it’s very cold. It’s slime. Super dooper slimey.

Angus - It’s soft

Alannah - It’s so stretchy.

Sofia - It’s cold. It’s stretchy. It’s jiggly.

Lola - It’s so sticky.

Ari - It’s sticky.

As the children have been exploring these materials it has been great to see them using an array of fine motor skills as they poked, squeezed and manipulated the slime, paint and shaving cream. Some of the children used their fingers to write their names or make marks in the shaving cream and paint bags. It was fantastic to hear a range of descriptive language being used when we asked them to tell us what it felt like. We will continue to utilise materials such as slime as a way for the children to work on their fine motor skills that will help them with an array of day to day tasks that require the use of these skills such as writing and cutting.

You may have noticed that we have placed a projector in our classroom. The children have been using a range of objects as well as their hands and bodies to make shadows against a wall. We were inspired to do this as we overheard children commenting on their shadows as we walked up to the library this week. Some of the children were sharing their ideas on why there were shadows and what created them. We are looking forward to exploring the topic of shadows with the children.

Have a great weekend,

Cass and Liana
