Dear Parents,
As part of our
Chinese lessons the children have been learning about the Chinese Mid-Autumn
Moon Festival. This festival's origins date back to ancient times, when people
would get together on the 15th day of the 8th moon, on a day of thanksgiving
for a good rice harvest. On this night, the moon is at its brightest and
friends and family gather together to enjoy the moonlight and of course eat
moon cakes. As mooncakes contain nuts, the Edgerley children made moon
biscuits, putting their very own slant on the tradition. They were delicious!
We have a new
visitor to the ELC revolving zoo. This week it is a turtle. Some of us were
fascinated in what he looked like underneath , so Mrs McKenzie carefully lifted
him out of his tank and we had a closer look. We will continue
our turtle investigations further.
It's hard
under, like the top. We can't touch the mouth otherwise they'll bit your
fingers - Ollie
He's got
sharp claws and a very hard shell - Stirling
The diving
bell spider makes a web in the water and they might make turtles endangered. I
know because I have a book at home that told me - Nicholas V
We have continued
exploring 'games with rules' this week and have even tried to make our very own
game with rules. We have particularly enjoyed a recycle game Mr Richards
brought in for the children, and have done a great job at sorting what needs to
go into which recycling bin. Did you know only hard plastics, not soft
plastics, can go into the yellow recycling bin?
Following on from
a spectacularly tall symmetrical construction Xavier D and Stirling created
last week, we have had fun exploring symmetry this week. We have played on
online game on the iPad which tested our understanding of what symmetrical
really means, where we had to sort pictures into those which were symmetrical
and those that weren't. Some were really tricky and you had to look really
carefully. We also created our own symmetrical pictures using tessellated
tiles. We did an amazing job! Aston decided in his creation that each side had
to be "the same shape, the same colour and the same size".
Best wishes,
Emma, Mel and
Chris
