Mattingley

Dear Mattingley Families and friends,

What a wonderfully busy week we have had together in the classroom. The children have continued to search in the outdoor learning environment on the hunt for insects. They must hear us coming because they still seem to be hiding from us. Some friends have continued their constructions with the clay, incorporating tools to manipulate it with. Next week we will add water to the table. We wonder what impact this will have on the clay as the children construct with it?

A big focus in our classroom this week has been planets. Monday morning a small group of children worked together to construct a plastic model of our solar system, putting each planet in order. Some of our friends were able to recognise some of the different planets that we were putting in order, while others are still developing their growing understanding. The main ones the children were able to recognise were Earth, because "I live on earth!" Rocco exclaimed. The other one was Saturn, "it has a ring" Claudia told us.

After we had finished building our model of the solar system we displayed it in the classroom and there was lots of excitement to learn more about the planets. Using our iPad we learnt that the planets are part of a solar system.

Solar system means to go around the sun- Claudia

Watching the youtube clip below we began to learn the names of the different planets in our solar system, focusing mainly on the planet Earth and Saturn. To extend on this experience the children have begun to create their own planets, naming them and talking about the colours that they were using to represent their planets. We have added them to our classroom solar system. We will continue to build on this next week.

I'm making Earth. I need green. Then I need blue to make it Earth- Harry
I'm making a new planet. It's one with ice- Hridhaan
We painting the sun. It's yellow coz (because) it the sun- Sofia
I'm making a moon- Mack
I make blue one- Nathan
Jupiter- Ethan
I'm making this one. It a small one- Edward
I'm making Pluto. It's green- Didier

We wonder where our journey through the Solar System will take us next week. One questions we will focus on is whether or not Pluto is a planet or not? What do you think?
