Cooper

Throughout the week we have been engaging in creating our own bees and bee hive. We have looked at what they look like and the characteristics of a bee and the shape of a hive. Along our walks to PE and library many of the children are fascinated about the bees that are found in the bushes. Through these conversations, it is evident that they are learning information and building on their prior knowledge each day.
During the week, we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to taste some honeycomb that a child from the Angwin class brought in to share for show and tell. We watched a short dvd about how honey is made and the journey that the bees go on so that we can eat honey at home.
Rory – Bees and honey. They made their hive and honey.
Lewis – The buzz around and get the honey from the pollen.
Byron – They collected honey. They put honey in the bee hive. They go to collect flowers.
Zara – They were putting the honey in the jars and the bottles. They were sleeping because they put the spray on them.
Alexander – The bees are sleeping.
Charlie P – Bees can sting people.
Aston – They were eating all of the nectar out of the flowers.
William G – They ate some honey. I just eat the honey.
Andrew – They made the honey and nectar and they were buzzing in the hive.
Charlie O – The big ones are workers.
Nicholas V – Bee a put in the hive. They put honey in the hive.
Sebastian Ho. – They drink out of the flower and take it out of the hive. Some bees are the workers and some bees take it back to the bee hive.
Rory – Bees are very nice because they give us honey. They work very very very hard to give us honey.
Charlie P. – Bees can sting people to protect them.
Hamish – Bees get out of the hive to get nectar to take it back to the queen bee.
Rory – Bee farmers want to get the honey ready for humans to eat.
Sebastien Ha. – The builders collect the honey for the queen bee.
Joshua – They put the honey into the jars.

To finish up our week, we decided to cook using honey as one of the main ingredients. And what better food to cook than honey crackles! First we had a taste of the yummy honey to see if it tasted the same or different from the honeycomb we had yesterday. It was decided that both were equally delicious! The ingredients needed for our honey crackles which were: cornflakes, coconut oil butter and lots of honey. After stirring the ingredients together we divided them into individual patty pans and placed them in the oven. In the afternoon the Cooper room sat down for afternoon tea and enjoyed our honey crackles as a class.
