Cooper

Hi Cooper families and friends,

On Tuesday we celebrated World Environment Day in the ELC. Each class had the opportunity to share with their peers their Environment Themed investigations, based around our Unit of Inquiry - Our Natural World. Through this we found that the Angwin room have also been looking at the life cycle of a plant – just like us!

Coinciding with World Environment Day the Cooper class replanted their bean stalks into the ELC garden. Before we replanted our beans the class spoke about what they think may happen once the bean is replanted and what they have observed over the past fortnight:

Sebastian A  – It’s grown up to here. Up to 17!
Xavier D  – It’s so big. It growed.
Sebastian A  – Can we draw how big it went up to. It’s a 1 and a 7.
Sebastian B  – We will replant them so that they grow.
Xavier C – My one is little.
Stirling – Maybe it will grow to the clouds and there will be a giant like Jack and the Beanstalk.
Mr Richards – I wonder why some of them are standing up and some of the plants have fallen down.
Sebastian B  – Maybe because we didn’t water them and they are dying.
Brian – They have bends.
Xavier D  – some of them bend and that’s why they are dead.
Karl – Maybe they will grow to the moon.
Ned – I just watered them.
Stirling – Maybe it will grow like this (moving his arms as high as he can above his heads).
Alexander – The plant is small.
Isaac S  – Maybe it will grow beans. If it was a tomato seed then it would grow tomatoes.
Sebastian A  – If they grow too fast they will bend.

We will continue to observe and care for our bean stalks across the remainder of the term. The children have been so engaged in the planting and gardening experiences over the last 2 weeks, that we have decided to plant and care for more plants in our very own Cooper room garden bed.

We have finally finished measuring and documenting how tall each of the bean stalks have grown over the past 2 weeks. Some of the children noticed that their bean stalk had grown even taller than it was last week. Sparked by our keen interest in measurement, we have set up a number table in the classroom in which the children can continue to develop their emerging numeracy skills, in particular, number recognition, sorting, measuring and counting.

We hope that you have a fun and safe long weekend.

Love Miss Gilbert and Mr Richards
