Dear Cooper Families and Friends
What a busy week we have had in
the Cooper room this week!
As many of you are aware over the
past term the Cooper class has been a bit bird crazy!
The children are now able
to recognise and name most of the birds that visit our school environment. The
Angwin room have also displayed a keen interest in birds as well, with a
particular focus on Rainbow Lorikeets. Through their whole-class inquiry they
created a map of the school which led the reader to the Rainbow Lorikeets
nests. On Tuesday both the Cooper room and Angwin room came together to share
what we had learnt, and then used the map to locate Rainbow Lorikeets. We were
lucky enough to see 3!
After watching a short video on
recycling, the Cooper and Mattingley room were so enthused by the idea of
helping our planet. The children engaged in an experience during the week where
we sorted rubbish that we had in our classroom and our homes. We sorted the
rubbish into 3 different bins; a red bin for general waste that goes to
landfill, a green bin for compost waste and a yellow bin for recyclables. This
was the dialogue taken from after our experience:
Lotti – I like recycling because
I have a bin at home that we put plastics in.
Sebastian Antonas – We can’t
throw rubbish in the water. It will hurt the turtles and the fish and all the
things in the sea.
Ed – Fish eat fish food, not
paper.
Sebastian Antonas – We recycle
the rubbish and paper.
Larissa – We have green, yellow
and red bin. We put different things inside.
Karl – We put leaves in the green
bin.
James – We put paper and yellow
paper in the yellow bin. And cardboard and tissues.
Olivia – The red bin is for
“landbill”.
Lotti – Landfill is where there
is a big hole in the ground for rubbish.
Ned – We sorted the bins out for
recycling. Then we are going to recycle rubbish in our classroom and then put
leaves on our recycling tree.
We
will be continuing this investigation over the next 2 weeks. If you would like
to contribute to our recycling mission, we would love to take some rubbish off
your hands. Each day we will be sorting the new rubbish into our 3 coloured
bins. With each piece of rubbish that we recycle we will be adding a leaf to
our “Recycling Tree”. Once we get to 100 leaves we will plant a tree in the
garden of our ELC to further help our environment.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Maddie and Chris
