Cooper

What an exciting week we have had in the Cooper room this week! We have been buzzing with excitement since the arrival of our chicken eggs at the start of the week. When we arrived at ELC on Tuesday morning we noticed something amazing had happened, 2 chickens had hatched from their eggs. Upon looking at the other eggs that were in the incubator, the children made observations that some of them had large cracks and holes in them. It wasn’t long before we were able to witness a chicken hatching out of its egg. It was an amazing experience which the children were thrilled to be able to watch.
Lotti – We need to give them some food because they might be starving. We need to take the fluffy, furry ones out.
Brian – We have 10 eggs and they hatched.
Xavier C – Hatched
Ned – Now we can see the chickens inside.
Quinn – The eggs cracked.
Yash – Chicken come out of egg.
Emilia – Someone needs to look after them. We could look after them.
Miss Gilbert – What do you think we would need to do to look after our chickens?
Lotti – We need to put some food and water and a blanket in there to keep them nice and warm.
Isaac C – They need a blanket.
Quinn – Be really gentle.
Emilia – Be really gentle with them.
Sebastian B – I don’t want to hold them.
Isaac B – Very gentle.
Aaron – We should talk quietly.
From these discussions we have created a list of rules that we need to follow when watching or holding the chickens. The children have been extremely engaged in the learning journey that we have been on with the chickens. We will have the chickens in the classroom until next week when the company Living Eggs will come to collect them from us. They mentioned that families are able to purchase these chickens to take home, they are $2 each and the money goes towards the charity Oxfam. Let me know if this is something that you are interested in doing.
We hope that you have a wonderful weekend.
Love Miss Gilbert and My Ty
