Mead

Dear Mead families,

The children were excited to discover one of our citrus caterpillars had hatched out of its cocoon when they came to school on Tuesday. Together, they observed the beautiful butterfly for a while before releasing it outside. We are eagerly watching and waiting for our Monarch Butterflies to emerge from their chrysalis’ also - we are excited to see what colours those butterflies will be.

We have had a classroom full of keen cutters this week, using different types of scissors to snip and cut pieces of paper and magazines. We will allow the children to freely explore the scissors for a period of time before introducing more intentional cutting experiences, allowing them to develop their control to cut along different lines.

Building has been another major focus in the classroom this week with the introduction of the plans for the Boarding House project across the street. The children have been examining these and talking about what the building might be. In small groups they have been exploring digging and tipping at the sensory tray and also exploring concepts of structure and stability at the light table and in the block areas, both inside and outside.

Outside, the children have continued to explore the garden, hunting for different treasures, sharing them with their friends and educators. We have started to gather these on a nature table outside, allowing the children to sort them and group them and revisit their discoveries. If you make any natural discoveries when at home or out and about, we would love for your children to bring these in to share with us.

A big thank you to Hugo’s nanny, Caitlin, who came in on Wednesday to talk to us about her work in a turtle sanctuary in Fiji! The children were fascinated  by what she did with the turtles and then were able to have a hands on turn cleaning some pretend turtles with a toothbrush.

Our Dancify program has finished for the term now, what a wonderful experience this has been for our Thursday children, learning new moves and developing their coordination and balance. They were excited to share their performance with our audience this week and we look forward to continuing to explore dance and movement in the classroom over the coming weeks.

Best wishes for a wonderful weekend,

Coney and Jess
