Dear Mead Room families and friends,
This term, in our Morning Meetings, we
have been discussing our theories of kindness and helpfulness. These conversations then led to deeper
concepts of inclusivity and belonging.
We used river pebbles as a conduit to
introduce the idea of ‘same and different.’
We looked at them closely – Are they all the same?
Grace-Marie - ‘Yes!’
Anwen -
‘They’re all rocks.’
Isla B -
‘Cos they’re all white.’
We looked closer, and some found a
different point of view…..
Cody – ‘They’re different.’
Hamish M – ‘They’re different shapes.’
Teddy -
‘That one’s longer.’
So whilst we noticed their ‘sameness’ we
began noticing their differences too.
We were able to transition our thinking
to ourselves. In last weeks blog we
noted that we all have bodies, bones, eyes, skin, and hair, but there are
special things about each of us that make us unique. Differences in hair
colour, eye colour; observable differences.
We delved deeper by reading a book by
Mem Fox; “Whoever you are.”
Ginger –
‘A smile is the same wherever you are’
Vivienne - ‘We don’t have the same skin.’
We celebrated our uniqueness, our right
to belong in our ELC community, and in many communities, by individualising our
own pebble. The children embraced their
creativity, and, individually, each pebble is a beautiful, unique creation,
just like them. When we placed the
stones all together – we see Harmony.
Have a terrific weekend.
Melissa and Georgia.
