Dear Mattingley Families and Friends,
What a wonderfully busy week we have just had together! We started
the week experimenting with a new type of painting. Together we mixed powder
paint, bubble liquid and lots of water to make a special type of paint to
experiment with. Using clean straws the children were encouraged to blow
the paint until there were enough bubbles to make a print. However first we had
to practice blowing, because while the paint wouldn't make us sick, it tasted
horrible if you accidentally sucked as some of our friends unfortunately found
out. Bubble blowing painting can be quite tricky so we had to practice and
preservere until there were enough bubbles to make a print with . You
can see our finished art work in our classroom on display.
This week we also continued our conversations about the Olympic
games, focusing on the flags from around the world. Some of our families had
told us which countries they are following through the games so we added their
flags to our display. Working together on our classroom computer we were able
to find a tally of all the medals that these countries had won. We then had the
massive task of adding these under the flags.
Australia has 6 gold, 7 silver, 9 bronze- Sammy remembered from our
research.
We ran out of medals when we came to China and Great Britain. Make
sure you come and have a look at our display. See if you can count all the
medals. Lucky we have some great counters in our class.
As part of our Olympic board we have added a world map to spark
the children's thinking about the world that they live in. It didn't take them
long to begin using it to work out not only where they live but where the
Olympic games is being held.
I live in Adelaide- Paxton

On Thursday Eloise's Mummy, Bek, had organised for Mark and Ian
from the Belair CFS to visit us at ELC bringing with them their fire
fighting gear and their fire engine. We learnt lots about what to do if there
is a fire in our house, practicing how to stop, cover, drop and roll and where
to meet when their is a fire at your house. I wonder if you know? Bek and
Mrs Rocca dressed up in their gear, which Mrs Rocca said was very heavy as Mark
and Ian explained what the equipment did to keep the fire fighters safe.
We got
to take a closer look at the fire truck by climbing all the way into
the back seat, which was very high from the ground. We were even
lucky enough to have a turn at squirting the hose. And of course on their
way out of the ELC car park we heard their loud and very impressive sirens. We would
love to say a big thank you to Bek for organising the visit as well as to Mark
and Ian who shared their time with us teaching us about fire safety. We
think that we all learnt something, even the teachers.
We hope that you all have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs Kimberley Mason and Mrs Coney Rocca
