Dear Edgerley Parents
This week we had a wonderful collision of our two main areas
of research, colours and plant life. Whilst discussing plants and how they grow
the children wondered how the plants were drinking the water we were giving
them. Were they drinking it through their leaves or perhaps their roots? Maybe
both? So, together with Mrs McKenzie and Miss C the children decided to give
white flowers a colourful drink to see if they could track where the water was
going. In a matter of days the children could see the petals of the flowers
changing colour.
“The flower is drinking it” said Rory
“It’s going up the straight bit” said Caterina
“That’s the straw of the flower, it’s its mouth” said Nicholas
Y
“It’s called a stem” said Rory
“I think we should make a rainbow flower” said Charlie O
The next day we talked about some ideas about how we might
create a rainbow flower with ink.
“Put the flowers into different glasses so the flowers can
be a colourful flower” suggested Rory. And so, following Rory’s
suggestion Zali swapped the coloured flowers into different coloured
inks.
“I think we should put all the colours of the rainbow in the
pot for a flower” suggested Henry.
Perhaps this could create a rainbow? We chose inks from the
cupboard and put them all into the same glass jar. Nyanwell stirred them
well and we placed a new white flower into this jar. We can’t wait to see if
either of our suggestions work. Which experiment will create a rainbow flower?
Our interest in worms has continued this week and one of our
friends has challenged us to think about creating a playground for our worms.
We will use clay next week to create a play space, just right for a worm. What
a wonderful way to think about the needs of another, will the worms like the
same type of equipment we like?
We also began to create a calendar so that we can anticipate
our birthdays and other important events across the year. We began by
discussing the idea of months.
“You can’t count all the months (on your hands) of course
because you only have ten fingers!” explained Aidan, holding up his
hands. “There are twelve months and four seasons” he went on to explain.
After printing out a list of birthdates so we could double
check, we started to glue our faces onto our birth months. Aidan
supported his friends by reading the names of the months so the children could
find the right one. We are going to have to make some of our months bigger as
some have lots and lots of birthdays! We think we might add the seasons to our
months. We have some other significant events coming up that we can also add.
Don’t forget that the week after next is Book Week. We have
lots of events planned but are particularly excited about our Book Week Parade
on Friday the 26th August. It was wonderful to see Rory bring
part of his costume in for show and tell, he will make a great Malfoy from the
book Harry Potter! We are really hoping that families are able to help children
find a character from a book (rather than a superhero or movie character) to
dress up in. If 'costumerie' is not your thing don’t forget that sometimes a
simple mask or hat is enough for your child to escape into a character from a
book. Our brief parade will be at 9.30am in the Town Square and we hope lots of parents can join us.
We also have another important date looming, our annual
Father’s Day event, the Big Boys Breakfast. It will be held on Thursday 1 September from 8.30am to 9.30am in the ELC and we hope that as many Dads as possible can join
us.
Looking forward to another jam packed week next week
Lots of love from Mel, Emma, Cris and Satin
