Dear Cooper families,
Our keen interest in
chickens has continued in the Cooper room this week. We have continued to feed
the chickens our salad scraps over the week, which has been enjoyable for both
the children and the chickens. We have also been collecting the eggs that have
been laid each day and counting them in the classroom. We have created a table
which we write in each day with the number of eggs that have been collected. We
will be using our mathematical skills such as counting and comparing to
determine which day of the week had the most eggs and which had the least.
On Thursday we had a
cooking experience in the classroom, where the main ingredient was … EGGS! We
decided to make meringues as we would have to separate the yolk from the egg
white, which made it easier to really see the different parts inside an egg.
Once we separated the egg white from the yolk we all has a feel of the yolk
(which we threw away after) to see what the texture felt like. Many of the
children remarked that it felt “gooey” and “slimy”. In our other bowl was the
egg whites, to this we added a pinch of salt and a bit of sugar and mixed it
round with a hand beater until it changed colour.
What colour has it turned into?
Cody – Yellow
Samuel – White
Declan – White
Cody – It’s white now
What did we add to our mixture to make our meringues?
Declan – eggs
Royce – Salt
Ed – Sugar
How did the egg feel once it had been blended?
Brian – Soft
James – Sometimes I have eggs at
my house. My mum likes eggs.
After we had scooped the mixture onto a baking tray we put them in
the oven to cook. The meringues turned out a little flatter than we had
anticipated but they were still delicious.
We hope that you have a
lovely weekend.
Love, Miss Gilbert and Mr
Ty
