Mattingley

Dear Mattingley Families and Friends,

On Monday morning we were very excited to see that one of our silkworms had spun its cocoon. Before we went up to the library we sat down as a class and had a close look at it. We reflected on what we had seen and what we had learnt about silkworms over the last couple of weeks.

Sofia - Silkworms eating leaves turning into cocoons turning into moths
Claudia – I know they do cocoons
Harry  – The eat leaves with their noses
Ben  –They are making a cocoon
Phoenix – I know silkworms eat leaves

When we returned from the Library we were thrilled to discover that another silkworm had begun spinning its cocoon. The children soon realised that a cocoon took a long time for a silkworm to spin but by the end of the day the cocoon was complete. Throughout the week more cocoons have been spun but apart from this we still have some silkworms indulging on mulberry leaves.  We are hoping to see an abundance of cocoons next Monday and are waiting in anticipation to see what happens next.

We decided to place some alphabet stamps with our playdough this week. It was great to see children identifying a range of letters, exploring the formation of the letter as well as inquire into the names of symbols they were unsure of. Many of the children decided to stamp their names into the playdough at the same time as sounding out their name. These types of hands on experiences are great way of supporting children’s emerging literacy skills.

This week we have also been busy practicing songs for The Nativity performance so if you’re hearing your child singing songs about Santa being stuck up a chimney or Santa wearing water-skis you now know why!

Have a great weekend,

Cass and Liana
