Dear Parents,
With our interest
in Chinese New Year, we have continued to look at the ancient customs and
stories that surround this celebration. We have read the story of 'Nian the
monster', of which many existing customs and activities of the festival can be
traced back to.
The children have created lucky ribbons to hang on our
classroom door to ward off any unwanted spirits and have produced some stunning
firework inspired paintings at the painting easels.
On Friday Miss Kim and
Silvia in our ELC kitchen are cooking a special Chinese themed lunch for us,
and we are also having some of the Senior school International students come to
the ELC to perform a Lion Dance for us. Some of the children wanted
to create a Chinese restaurant in the room, and so we have now opened and are
serving steaming bowls of noodles and delicious stir fry chicken. Please pop in
for a mouth-watering meal!
On Tuesday we
celebrated Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes. We followed a pancake recipe
step by step, as we carefully measured ingredients and mixed them. The children
thoroughly enjoyed the experience and proved very capable cooks. The end
results were very tasty and popular, with many asking for seconds. Make sure
you watch our Shrove Tuesday video on Seesaw.
Our Show and Tell
roster is up and running and we have had some interesting items coming in for
sharing. Please try to encourage your child to remember their day, as it only
comes along once a fortnight. Any items on Chinese New Year that you may
have at home would be greatly appreciated at the moment. Tom B, who has just
returned to Adelaide after living in Hong Kong, brought in some fantastic
photos to share of Chinese New Year celebrations he had been involved with in
Hong Kong.
Lewis celebrated
his 5th birthday on Tuesday and we enjoyed helping him celebrate with delicious
cupcakes. We would like to congratulate Lewis and all the other new
members of Edgerley on how well they have settled. It isn't always easy to
start a new class or school.
This, along with another class member having a bad
dream one night, led us to discussions this week around the emotion of
feeling frightened. We created a Y diagram as we looked at what being
frightened looks like, feels like and sounds like. We decided that we all have
moments where we feel frightened, and this is perfectly normal, and that
there are certain things we can do to help ourselves feel better at these
times.
Kind regards,
Emma, Chris and
Mel
