Dear Mattingley families and friends,

We have had many little engineers in our classroom this week building with the large foam blocks. It has been a lovely opportunity for them to practice their problem solving and negotiating skills.  Many engineers with lots of different ideas have a tendency to add difficulty to any construction site, however they were able to work together to create some wonderful structures.

We have also had lots of Doctors in our classroom this week making sure that we are all feeling well in this cold weather. Unfortunatly we had many sick baby dolls over the week, however with the exceptional skills of our classroom Doctors they have all made a full recovery.

Did you know??

Did you know that the Preparatory School Library is open until 4pm for borrowing?

If you have the time please make your way to the library and borrow some books with your child. The books can be returned to the ELC and we will take them up to the library for you when you have finished with them.  

Did you know that the ELC children library is up and running?

Next to the Cooper room on the bookshelf are a number of picture books that can be taken home by your child. It is an honour system - please choose a book and return when ready.

The parent library is almost ready. There are a few titles to choose from. When the new titles arrive these books can be borrowed on a sign out/sign in basis.

Did you know that the ELC is open during the school holidays?

Term Two finishes on Friday 26 June. The ELC will be open for the school holidays - 29 June - 20 July and the co-educators are currently busy planning the Winter Program.

In each classroom there is a sign for you tell us if you will be taking holidays over this time or attending the ELC. Please indicate with a tick or cross. Holiday leave may apply for some absences. See Melanie if you have any questions regarding the holiday fee.

Mighty Machines

Next term the kindy children are engaging in a unit called ‘Mighty Machines’. As part of this we would like them to be able to deconstruct household electrical goods.

If you have any old broken (or unbroken but unwanted) electrical items such as kettles, keyboards, hairdryers, toasters etc.. we would love to have them. 

Unfortunately, we can’t accept computer or television screens and we will be unable to return your items in working order.

Angwin

Dear Angwin Families

 

Angwin children have been beginning to quantify their recent investigations about colour mixing. Using cellophane we have begun to isolate which colours mix together to make new ones and transferring these discoveries to the light table. Louis was particularly struck by his discovery after sticking blue cellophane over red. He rushed to the light table to stack transparent blue and red blocks. “Oh my God! It makes purple too!!” he exclaimed.

We have also been using colour to create patterns on grids. Do you know what a pattern is? Ask your Angwin child to explain it to you. Do you know we even have a pattern on our ELC t-shirt?. We will be using our knowledge about patterns to help us create a shared art work with the Edgerley children  next week. 

 

After our excursion to Coopers Stadium last week children have created their own mini oval. We can’t wait to see what colours the players wear, could it be yellow and black for John or teal and black for Felix? Finally we have begun to explore what colour can tell us about food. We have been matching colours and scents in our playdough and even made strawberry icecream… what colour do you think it is?

Chapple

Dear Chapple Families

 

We started the week learning the “Funky Dance” with Heidi from Dancify. The children quickly picked up the moves and particularly enjoyed the “funky DJ” move. She is back again on Wednesday next week so more children will get their chance to strut their stuff.

Sterling brought in “Paddy” for show and tell- He was very friendly and very white.

Our stained glass windows were very colourful and make a lovely display on the light table.

Following a discussion on what is white, the children talked about snow and polar bears- Mrs Shakespear has leapt into action and we have a very large Polar Bear cave in construction- I am sure you will have noticed!

 

As a conclusion to our term Inquiry into Colour we will be having a Colour Run on Tuesday 16 June. The children require a white t-shirt that we can add paint to. There are pictures in the Workshop of last year's events to give you an idea of what happens on the day.

Wilkins

Dear Wilkins families and friends,

A big warm welcome back to Miss Nicole who has returned from Maternity leave. Please come and introduce yourself if you haven’t already J

On Monday morning our friend Heidi came to visit us from Dancify. Heidi showed us some very exciting new dance moves and she let us dance to some of our favourite songs from ‘The Wiggles’. As you can imagine our Wilkins friends really enjoyed this.

There has been lots of cooking in our Sandpit Kitchen this week. The Wilkins friends have been having lots of conversations about what they have been cooking for each other.

On Wednesday morning, the Wilkins teachers witnessed a pretend fire in the Sandpit kitchen. Firemen Sam, James, Charlie and Alexander were to the rescue. They used red buckets as their fire helmets and used the hose to put out the fire. What an eventful time this was.

We also wish to inform you that Miss Amy is leaving to commence her teaching career. Miss Amy’s last day will be on Wednesday the 10^th of June. In the interim, Miss Ellen will working in the Wilkins room until further notice.

Mattingley

Dear Mattingley families and friends,

Yet another colourful week has past us by in our very busy classroom. This week we have enjoyed investigating what happens when we blow air through water. We added dye to bubble mix and created some fun bubble paitnings. We were able to record our bubbles by pressing paper onto our  cup full of all the bubbles we had created. We just have to remember to blow on the straw not suck on it!

Next week we will be focusing on the colour pink in our classroom. In our morning meeting we will brainstorm what colours we could mix together to make the colour pink. We will also be collecting small pink craft items to add to our colourful collage. 

Please remember that Monday is a public holiday.

Cooper

Hello Cooper friends and families,

This week the children have been creating wonderful rainbows at the painting easels. The class used a picture of a rainbow as their reference and then they painted their own interpretation.

Um so this is blue and this yellow and this red and this orange and this is green and this violet and this is called um what is this one called again? Oh um indigo. Zoë

Um it’s a rainbow and um it’s very big and it libs (lives) in the sky. Oscar M

Because there is lots of colours cos there is green, yellow and purple and pink and red and blue and orange it’s a rainbow. Sylas W

We have also been experimenting with Tempera paints and toothbrushes to create fireworks on large pieces of white paper. The class dipped their toothbrushes into the paint and then used their fingers to flick the paint onto the paper. The paintings are now on display on the Cooper Room windows so don't forget to have a look at them the next time you're in.

Dear Parents and Friends,

As part of our transition programmes we have been making lots of visits up to the Prep School. The boys have had a taste of Chapel, recess and lunch time as well as plenty of visits to our new room. They are feeling very excited! Here are our reflections after the play at recess…

Sebastian: I went down the fireman’s pole… it was very cold.

Joe: I got to the top of the spider’s web!

Zander: I climbed a big pole to go on the flying fox. There are lots of big boys who said “Look at that kid!”

Harry F: I climbed halfway up the spider’s web and ran around the playground. It felt nice seeing the big boys!

Knox: I was running around playing zombies. I almost climbed up the spider web. I saw my brother Zander.

Oliver: I had a problem with a big boy. A teacher helped me to fix my problem.

Campbell C: I was chasing and running around. There were lots of big boys playing footy.

James Mc D: I was playing cheetahs. It was quite loud.

Ansh: I liked playing on the pole near the bridge. I was hanging on the bars. I ran around too.

Domenic: I climbed all the way up on the spider web.

Max: I saw Will and Matthew and my Mum.

Tommy: I liked skipping on the monkey bars.

Nathan: I climbed up onto the spider’s web. I was chasing Oliver.

Archie: When I was climbing on the monkey bars some big boys came over to see me.

Campbell B: I was standing near the oval and got the ball for the big boys playing footy.

James C: I liked seeing my big brother Tommy. He played with me!

Sahil: I was playing cheetahs with James Mc D.

Daniel: I was trying to run and catch some white birds on the oval.

Mead

Dear Mead Room families,

It has been a festival of colour this week in the Mead Room.
Sorting colours, identifying colours, experimenting with creating new colours and a collaborative art experience. We also found time for a Dancify lesson with Heidi too!

On Thursday we placed a variety of coloured paints and a huge sheet of paper out on the big table for the children to explore.  Music was playing in the background, however we turned it up loud as a provocation to investigate if music influences the collaborative art process. When the music was subdued the children painted, shared resources and experimented with mixing colours.  Then the didgeridoo, whistles, and drums erupted from the CD player ……….The children began to paint intensely and a rich exchange of ideas emerged—

Ned—a lizard, and not too many snakes—not at my house

HELLO TO KARTIK AND JACK!!
Kartik Gupta and Jack Woodrow are not attending the ELC at the moment…… they are having adventures in other countries! Their families are accessing the blog from overseas and love seeing what the Mead Room friends are experiencing.
Kartik, his little brother and Mum and Dad are visiting family in India.
Jack and his family have just left Australia to live in Japan for 3 months.  Jack’s Mum told us that he will be going to kindy in Japan! They will be visiting family too.
