Angwin

Dear Angwin Parents and Friends,

We’ve had a very eeeeeventful and eeeeexciting week in Angwin. We introduced the Ee sound and have had so much fun eeeexploring the many words that begin with this letter. The most fun of all was reading the story of Elmer and then making our very own Elmer elephant for the classroom. We traced it onto some paper using the overhead projector and used our bodies to further explore shadows and light. Then we all helped to paste coloured squares onto the elephant. The following day we painted the other side in grey- to look like all the ordinary elephants. We also made smaller Elmer elephants and practised writing the letter Ee. We have also explored the story of Horton Hatches an Egg and plan to make Green Eggs and Ham next week, when we will introduce the letter Hh. This has all created a further interest in jungles and jungle animals. Watch our room transform over the next couple of weeks!

Thank you,

Angwin Team

Wilkins

Dear Families,

This week we have been continued our exploration of light and shadows using torches in our dark classroom and creating images at the light table using a tray of rice and beans. This has been a wonderful way for the children to recognise the difference between light and shade as well as been a wonderful sensory experience.
We have also been interested in rubbish trucks and how they work, watching You Tube clips and exploring this in role play with the toy garbage trucks. We have been developing our listening skills at the listening station, following along with familiar stories and tunes.

The home corner has also been a hive of activity as we role play using chopping fruits and vegetables and a range of different types of play appliances. We have had chefs and cooks creating all sorts of different meals and beverages and have been discussing what Miss Sue and Miss Robina do in the ELC kitchen.
Outside, we have continued exploring water and mud in the sandpit (weather permitting) using buckets, spades, water, building blocks and greenery from the garden. We have also been developing our ball skills playing social games, enjoying time in our quite book nook and exploring cause and effect using the car ramp tubes.

Best wishes for a great weekend.

Karla, Amy and Jess

PS: Miss Jess will be away on Monday, Tuesday and Friday next week. Miss Emily and Miss Brooke from the Langley room will be in the Wilkins room from 8am on these days as a familiar face to assist children at separation time before Miss Karla starts at 10am. Miss Faye and Miss Kendall will also be helping in the room next week to replace Miss Amy who is still on her teaching prac.

Chapple

Dear Families

After the excitement of Big Boys Breakfast, we have been working hard on our sunset pictures for the artsPACes exhibition which takes place on Wednesday 17th September 2014 5.45- 8PM. Our beautiful “Sunset over the city” creations will be on display in the Chapel if you want to see them. We have used our construction blocks to make our own city landscapes and have developed our numeracy skills by using tape measures to see how big they were.

Kai asked an interesting question.

Kai: “How is it that the Sun shines in some countries, but at the same time at PAC it is dark?”

We have used our big globe to try and answer it.

Our glitter lanterns are beginning to take shape and we have been using the light table to make our own straw construction. We have also started to make our blossom letters for the tree as well.

We have continued to practise for Sports Day on the 25th September with Mr Weatherald helping us with our health hustle.

From the beginning of Term 4 we will start to visit the Reception classes in the Prep School. We will have an initial half an hour visit for the first few weeks. This will start on the first Wednesday of Week 1, rotating through the days over the next few weeks to make sure everyone has an opportunity to visit. Longer more formal visits will take place later in the term.

Sign in and Sign out sheets

Dear Families

To assist us with the effective management of supervision and numbers of children throughout the day, we will be trialling a new sign in/sign out system.

From Monday 8 September we will be changing to a 'day to a page' signature system. Please ensure that you (or authorised collection person) signs your child in and out and that a staff member has been notified that they are here or have been collected.

As you are aware with such a large centre it is a huge task to know how many children we have at any given time. We are hoping that with a less 'busy' sign in/out page we can conduct regular head counts with ease. We welcome your feedback as to how you feel this system is working once we have implemented it.

If you miss a signature all sheets will now be in a 'Missed Signatures' folder at the front desk. Please find your child's room in the folder, the day you have missed and sign in or out. It is a Government requirement for Child Care Benefit  and Child Care Rebate  that parents sign off the attendance sheets and we thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

If you have any questions regarding the above, please do not hesitate to speak with  me or the educators in your child's room.

Regards

Melanie

The Big Boys Breakfast

The Big Boys Breakfast

A big thank you to all our Dads and special Big Boys for joining us to celebrate Fathers’ Day at our Big Boys Breakfast Thursday morning. It was a special morning where our Big Boys were treated to a delightful concert, a handmade tie, which we know you wore all day long, a special gift and yummy pancakes. After they had finished eating they were able to share a favourite book or two snuggled up in the Book Nook with their child. During the morning we also raised funds for Beyond Blue, which is an Australian, independent non-profit organization working in partnership with health services, schools, workplaces, universities, as well as people living with anxiety and depression to raise community awareness of anxiety and depression and reduce the associated stigma. We will continue to collect donations until the end of next week.

My Daddy was coming in with me and Toby. We had some orange juice. We had water- Addie

Chapple

Dear Families

It has been great for the children to get outside and enjoy the Spring sunshine. We even managed to get the fountain flowing again. We took part in the walk-a-thon on Monday. We have had another transition visit to the Prep School and sat in on a JP Chapel service. We looked at how far we could jump on the Moon ( 6 times further) due to less gravity. We had a great discussion on animals that sleep in day and animals that sleep at night. A great student inquiry question came up “If nocturnal is the word for owls that fly at night, what is the name for animals that sleep at night?” The answer, we discovered, is diurnal.

Also the children had some great suggestions about what animals we might see at night- foxes, cats, owls, mice, dragons and aliens.

Why might we see these animals at night?

“Foxes hunt at night.”

“Cats like to eat mice”

“Owls like to eat mice too.”

“Dragons have flames, so they can see in the dark.”

“Aliens are like foxes, they like to go through your bins at night.”
