Angwin

Dear Angwin Families

This week in Angwin we have begun to explore colour in earnest. We began by sharing all the colours that we knew. We had the expected list of colours such as pink, blue and green but the children also began to think about variations of colours such as light and dark or sparkly and shiny. We decided that silver was actually shiny grey.

The children then began to discuss how new colours can be made. Arwyn described it as “mixing”. Sujay described how blue and yellow mix together to make green. We explored this at the light table using pipettes and inks. Mrs Bishop only put out pots of yellow, blue and red so we were amazed to discover that Scarlett’s picture had purple on it, Caitlyn’s had green and Joe’s even had some orange! Where did these colours come from?

The children madly got to work trying to create more colours. Finally Autumn, Allegra and Scarlett raced around the classroom showing off their dripping paintings, “We made…grey!!!!” they exclaimed together. We hung our ink explorations on the laneway window to let the sun shine through them so we could really see what colours were hidden in there. “It’s like a rainbow!” said Autumn. Many of the children must have had some experiences with colour at the hair dressers because they were very interested in how hair dressers can change the colour of your hair!

Wednesday children were lucky enough to visit the light horse camp on the top oval of the Prep School. A man dressed as a world war one soldier explained how soldiers had lived 100 years ago. He looked very much like the soldier in the book we read before Anzac Day. One of the horses, Jack, let us give him a pat while he munched his hay. The soldier showed us Jack’s saddle, irons and bridle. He explained how soldiers used horses as transport in world war one, some like trucks pulling wagons and some like racing cars speeding across the battle fields. We liked Jack, he was warm and fuzzy and very big… and he also sneezed on us a few times… and that made us laugh!

Looking forward to a jam packed week next week
