In the Classrooms

Langley
A huge thankyou to Mrs McCauley and the Year 2M boys who welcomed us into their art class on Wednesday and help us with some experiments to see how different art mediums can change. We used wax crayons and water colours, we experienced tie dying and we looked at how coloured inks react with wet paper. The children later reflected on their experiences;
“We painted” said Archie,
“The big kids did it with me” added Marcus,
“The big boys school, paint a photograph of my Mummy” said Alyssa,
“He helped me paint” reflected Eden,
“Painting, I dipped the water onto the page” said Priyanka.
The children have also discovered some beautiful coloured autumn leaves this week and have been discussing why they are falling off the tree. We would love to collect a big tub of autumn leaves to play with next week so would welcome any donations from your garden!
Kind regards,
Jess, Hayley, Kerry and Emily

Mead
Dear Mead Parents,
This week the children's interest have led to many, many experiments investigating....CHANGES?
Where do the jelly crystals go when we add hot water?
What happens when we squeeze a lemon?
Can we squeeze a carrot?
How did the chocolate turn to mud?
How can I make my mud look like yours - all gooey?
We have been mixing powders with water, squeezing fruit and creating yummy juice, mixing jelly crystals and even melting chocolate (a treat for Mrs McKenzie's birthday)!! Experiments outdoors have created a wonderful recipe for mud and some erupting volcanoes. We are loving the opportunity to mix, stir, watch, listen, crush, grind and mash. It will be a good term to make sure the children have a spare set of clothes in their bag for those messy days!

Wibble wobble jelly making:
"You have to put the jelly in the cups and stir it." Marios
"It makes the jelly all cold - we don't want the jelly to be hot because it might burn our tongues." Jack O
"It takes like a smoothie" Jack J
"It sticks!" Seth
"The crystals have all disappeared into the jelly. The water's all red now." Tommi
"Mine tastes like strawberry." Oliver

Enjoy a wonderful weekend!

Cooper
Using pipettes the Cooper children experimented with changing colours this week. First they had to master how to squeeze and fill the pipettes with blue, red or yellow liquid, then how to squirt it in little drops (or big splashes) onto paper towel. The children noticed that different combinations of the primary colours could make new and different colours and also that if you mixed lots of everything you ended up with brown.
"I dribbled it on top of them and they changed colours" observed Marco.
"When you squeeze it a bit it goes a bit dark blue and a bit light blue" said Deacon.
"Look how it changes. I mix the colours and it changes" noticed Ajeet.
"I mix the colours and change. I put blue and yellow then it change, it make green" explained Cooper.
The children also saw how the paper changed from dry to wet and back again when it was hung out. Our next experiment will be how to colour playdough...
Kind regards,
Ali and Susan

Chapple
Flying broom sticks and cauldrons full of magic potions and spells filled our classroom this week. As well as continuing their keen enthusiasm in the world of witches, the children have been talking about how magic spells work and how things can change and transform....so watch out - you might become a frog, or a dinosaur or if you're lucky a princess! We have also been experimenting with painting water colour pictures and adding salt to them whilst they were still wet. Have a look at some of our creations on the wall in our classroom! We also enjoyed watching pop corn pop and change from a kernal to a piece of popcorn....
“On the oven it will be hot and it will pop because it’s hot” said Charlie
“The corn is going to pop, it will be a popcorn” added Ryan
“Yeah, the little stuff will disappeared and grow out to big stuff” said Oliver
“Where did all the little bits of corn go, how did they change?” asked Mrs McGee
“The corn goes inside the popcorn when it pops” said Ryan
“Yeah, it goes inside the corn” added Jesse.

We hope to discover more fun, wonderful things about change next week!
Warm wishes, Suria, Sinead, Rachel and Sue

Edgerley
Dear Edgerley Parents,
We enjoyed a wonderful week of dissolving. As you are aware we experimented with Milo and jelly crystals (yum) but also tried to dissolve other things such as sand, sugar, corn kernels, instant coffee and then coffee beans. Our experiments produced some unexpected results and we are now keen to explore how things change as a result of drying and melting. We look forward to testing our theories next week.
Kind Regards
Mel and Rosalie
