In the Classrooms

Langley

We have continued our investigation into change this week as we hypothesised about what might happen to celery when we put it in coloured water;
“Maybe it’s going to get bubbles” suggested Alyssa,
“What is going to happen?” pondered Olivia.
The children sat and watched eagerly to see what was going to happen. It took a little bit of time but after we came back from lunch we were excited to discover that something very interesting had happened to the celery;
“It’s going up, up, higher” Alec observed,
“the green is moving” he added, “and the red is starting too”,
“they are trying to get to the very top” he predicted.
“Purple” observed Sebastian R,
“Why have they gone purple?” Miss Jess asked,
“because they are in purple water!” Sebastian R cried excitedly.
Alec and Sebastian R peered into the coloured water, trying to work out how the colour had got up into the leaves;
“Maybe the water went up the stairs” suggested Sebastian R.
“maybe a bug pushed it up” suggested Alec.
Kind regards,
Jess, Kerry, Jennifer and Hayley
Mead
Dear Mead Parents,
There has been a lot of scientific investigations taking place this week in our room. The Mead children have made many discoveries and observed lots of changes taking place. We have turned bread into toast, and watched butter melt onto the toast. We have mixed colours. We decided to investigate how we could change a lemon and a carrot. We discovered that lemons can be squeezed to make lemon juice, and carrots can be grated and then squeezed to make carrot juice.
"I saw it" Gabe said excitedly as the first juice squeezed out of the lemon.
"It's dropping in perfectly" Tommi added.
"We could make lemonade" JJ suggested.
"Or we could make rockmelon juice............apple juice...........orange" others suggested.
"Or coke juice" Jack O added.
"Do you get coke juice from a fruit" Mrs McKenzie asked?
"There might be a coke fruit in a far away land" Jack offered.
"No there not. You don't make it. You just have to buy it" said Milo.
We look forward to more discoveries.
Best wishes,
Emma M, Susan and Emma G

Cooper
In our morning meeting time this week the Cooper children discussed the weather and the children noticed that the days had been getting cooler. We talked about the season being autumn and read a non-fiction book about the season, and then went for a walk around our school to look for changes in the environment. As soon as we walked out the door the children noticed that the trees at the front of the ELC had turned yellow. They looked around and found many leaves had fallen to the ground and that they were many different colours. The children collected hundreds of leaves! We took our leaves back to Cooper and examined them on the light box. Some children chose to paint autumn pictures at the easel and others made prints of the leaves with paint and rollers. As they worked they talked about the changes they had observed...
"They turned all sorts of colours" said Deacon.
"The trees are changing colours because it’s autumn… and even some are changing orange!" noticed Erin.
"The leaves were green and now they’re orange and the spots turned different colours. The green ones turned to yellow" said Lucy.
"When the leaves turn yellow they fall down. It’s sunny. I go out to play" said Marco.
"They changed red" said Austin.
"They change colours when it’s autumn and spring. They’re brown… the trees are brown now. It’s cold on my farm and the sheep have coats and the coats are called wool" explained Harry.
Next week we would like to create an outdoor play space full of autumn leaves, any bags of leaves from families will be gratefully accepted!
Kind regards,
Ali and Susan

Chapple
Welcome back to another term in the Chapple room! This term we are exploring 'Changing States'. The children already had many ideas about change:
Caterpillars turn into butterflies – Ryan

Leaves, they drop on the floor and change colours in Autumn – Charlie

Chameleons change colours to hide - Jesse

Fairies have magic and they can change things with their words – Ashraf

Rainbows can change colours - Max

We have already begun experimenting with mixing water colours, changing the shape of paper through folding, rolling, and twisting seeing what happens when we mix bi-carb and vinegar and changing the colour of flowers! You may have noticed the children working on their magic potions complete with their witches and wizard hats and wands....we are now making cauldrons with paper mache to further explore this world of change and magic.If you would like to see more of what we have been exploring, we have begun to put up some photos and work samples on the wall above the lockers, please have a look!
Warm wishes - Suria, Sinead, Rachel and Sue

Edgerley
Dear Edgerley Parents,
Wow, what a busy week we have had. Dougal led a project using autumn leaves as paint and created a picture of a person with his friends “I think his name is going to be Julian!” he said, looking at the finished product. We also discussed why the autumn leaves had changed colour and decided that it was because of the cold weather. We came up with a list of things that we would like to put in the freezer next week so that we can observe wether coldness can change other things too. We also talked about dissolving. Zac was able to explain to us how things dissolve. “You put milo in the milk and then it goes to nothing and the milk tastes like milo but you can’t see the milo anymore. It will dissolve if you put it in hot milk or warm milk but if you put it in cold milk it stays on the top and stays crunchy and that is not dissolving!” he explained. Next week we will continue to explore the concept of change through dissolving. We also managed to squeeze in another weeding this week!! Newly inspired by Kate and Wills royal wedding we prepared our breakout space for our guests and created wedding rings. Thankyou to Mrs Blake who provided our wedding music. I’m sure that you remember that we are well practiced in the art of hosting weddings after our term four extravaganza! At gym we continued to explore locomotion but particularly enjoyed playing with the parachute… it made our hair stand on end!!
What will next week bring!!
Mel and Rosalie
PS: please continue to send in those baby photos, thankyou to those who already have.
