Dear
Angwin families and friends,
Our
Winter Holiday Program kicked off strongly with the children continuing their
interests in space, planets and the changes in season.
In
response to these inquiries, we engaged in varied activities that extended our
explorations of these concepts. On Monday, we made sensory moon sand. Using
very simple ingredients, the children enjoyed the feel of flour that they
could, squish, mould and even scour through for moon rocks and moon stones.
It
smells like my baby, Felix said as he smelt the baby oil.
It’s
so soft, Walter added.
It’s
like orange because of the meteorite, Samuel explained.
Inspired
by our discussions and the texture of moonsand, we cooked edible moonsand using
a Spanish- Filipino sweet treat recipe that Mrs Rocca grew up with called
Polvoron. After toasting the flour, the children helped pound, pour and mix the
ingredients of our cookies and cream flavoured moonsand.
I
really like eating the sugar and butter, Billy shared.
It
was so yummy and Daniel tried the gluten free one, Edward said
I
am happy I didn’t miss out because we made the same but different one and I was
allowed to eat it, Lachlan explained.
Eating
it was really delicious, Paxton quipped.
I
could smell the chocolate and taste the sugar in it, Fred added.
I
like the sugar in the moons - Felix
There was lots
of big smiles and giggles as we all enjoyed a few spoonfuls of moonsand and Mrs
Rocca was pleased to be able share this part of her childhood with the
children.
This
week we also talked about the changes in seasons now that winter is here. We
took walks around the campus to see and take pictures showing us how autumn is
different from winter. We noticed that almost all the leaves on the trees have fallen down and that it is much colder than before.
We shared what we like to do in winter with our families and it's amazing how
many of us like to just snuggle in bed in our pyjamas, drink warm beverages and
stay nice and warm with cuddles, with a few lucky ones that get to have
holidays in the snow or warm places.
Next
week we will focus more on how we can create small garden spaces using
recyclable materials. If you happen to have old gumboots, clean milk and juice
containers and old terracotta pots, we would love to have them. Looking forward
to another fun and learning filled week with the children.

Rocca and Ms Jen
