Chinese Lessons

Dear Parents,

“Ni Men Hao” (Hello!)

In Chinese classes this term, we have been focusing on learning simple daily conversations and different names of food through social-dramatic play.

At the beginning of this term, we learned the Chinese version of ‘Twinkle twinkle little star’ and a song called two tigers (Tone: Brother John). The children have been enjoying practising their singing with me in and outside of class.

Several new books have been introduced to the children and we also learned the names of different kinds of food based on ‘The very hungry piglet’ and ‘Go shopping’. While we read the book ‘The very hungry piglet’, the children were involved in acting out the story with me.

We also enjoyed the  ‘Go shopping’ game, through which children played as shopkeepers and costumers and practised their new-acquired knowledge. Short sentences, such as ‘Ni mai shen ma?’ (What do you want to buy?), ‘Xie xie.’ (Thank you.), ‘Bu ke qi.’ (You are welcome.) have been practised through the shopping game.

Action words like ‘Fei’ (fly), ‘Pao’(run), ‘Tiao’ (tiao), ‘Zou’(walk) have been reviewed through different stories and games.

The children have also been encouraged to practise what they have learnt outside of the class. We have been talking about the food we eat in Chinese during morning tea and lunch time and I have also encouraged the children to ask me everything they want to know about Chinese and Chinese culture when we play outside in the afternoon. The children have showed great interest in learning more about Chinese words and using them when they talk to me.

How do we say these words in Chinese?

Qiao ke li – chocolates

Bang Bang Tang – lollipop

Tian tian quan – doughnuts

Dan gao – cakes

Mian Bao -- bread

Niu nai – milk

Best wishes, from Wenting
