In the Classrooms

Langley
The Langley children have begun investigating our new unit Storymakers with much enthusiasm and we have quickly discovered the children have so many stories to share about a whole range of different topics. We have shared stories about our paintings, we have acted out stories with costumes, and we have told stories about our block building and what we did during the holidays. Hannah even shared a joke with us.
“What do cows do on a Saturday night?” she asked,
“They go to the mooooovies!” she told us with a giggle.
Be sure to come and take a look at the stories we have created and shared on our display board.
Thank you to those families who have brought in their shoeboxes of love. Mrs Lock has been helping the children fill their shoe boxes this week. It is wonderful to see the children enjoying this experience and beginning to develop their understanding of giving to other, even if it is a bit tricky to leave our shoebox full of goodies behind at the end! It is not too late to bring your shoebox in next week if you haven’t already done so.
Kind regards
Jess, Adele, Kerry and Jennifer

Mead
The Mead children have been welcomed back by some feathery friends in the classroom. Following their interest in the parrots who often frequent our ELC cafe while we are eating, we have some preserved species on loan for exploration and discussion. They have generated much inspiration for artwork too.

Cooper
This week we have begun our ‘Storymakers’ unit by telling stories about our paintings at the easel. The children told very imaginative stories about dinosaurs, snakes, crocodiles, chickens and all sorts of other things. Erin began her story “Once upon a time…” and went on to tell a story about a chicken that needed a hug! Sienna started her dinosaur story with “It were a long, long, long year ago…”. Many of the children have also created new stories and recreated favourite stories by dressing up and acting on our Storymakers Stage, particularly enjoying being bears and lions and going hunting for each other. It is amazing how much we already know about making stories!
Kind regards,
Ali and Susan

Chapple
Welcome back to our final term in the ELC! And a big welcome to Miss Eleanor! Chapple Room students will soon be going to school! How exciting.
During the week we began having a look at fairy tales. We have particularly enjoyed ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears.’ We have spent some time talking about the different characters and why each character is different. We then decided that we could act out the story ourselves! This was great fun as we gathered props to help us tell the story. We changed characters numerous times and some of us have been the narrator. We’ve also discussed what a ‘setting’ is – it’s “the place where the story is.” The setting in Goldilocks is the Bear’s House in the Forest. We have also begun writing a class story! When reading with your child, ask them to identify the special characteristics of the characters. Talk about the setting and describe it together.
We have also been inquiring into things that sink and things that float. Don’t you find it astounding that an enormous boat can float, yet a small rock will sink? We’ll investigate this further next week as we bring in things that sink and float as part of our Show and Tell.

Edgerley
Edgerley students jumped right into our unit with gusto this week. We enjoyed working together to create the story of the three little pigs with puppets, listened to told stories and closed our eyes to make our own pictures, enjoyed listening to story books with Mrs Gilchrist at the library and started to make our own books in the classroom.
We particularly enjoyed Parsley Rabbits Book About Books and have begun to think about the different types of books we find and enjoy.
We also enjoyed preparing for some weddings in our classroom this week, moving furniture, making wedding cakes and rings and assigning roles. We were all so excited to see Jack’s Mum and Dad’s wedding album for his show and tell. Next week we will continue this play by making tuxedos as the children have highlighted this form of apparel as very important in weddings!
Kind regards
