Mattingley

Dear Mattingley families and friends,

As Autumn slowly starts taking over our natural environment many of our friends have been collecting Autumn leaves on their way to ELC to share with their friends. Riani is very passionate about leaves and always brings in interesting shaped and coloured ones for us to take a closer look. Usually around the ELC at this time of year we find hundreds of thousands of Autumn leaves, but this year they seem to be a little slower at changing. We wondered if we might be able to find more in the Big School. So together with our camera and a bag for collecting leaves we set of to find the Secret Garden in the Middle School.

Upon arriving we didn't find too many leaves at first, however when the children started exploring this beautiful garden they began to find some. It was beautiful exploring this special garden together  and making our way through the Big School, seeing the big boys on their way to class. We will endeavour to explore this garden more regularly through the term, on the search for Autumn leaves. If you have any at home we would love for you to bring them in so we can incorporate them into our projects this term.

This week we also continued our investigations into colour mixing. Focusing on the primary colours red and yellowed we hypothesised what secondary coloured we would make if we mixed them together.

Maybe we make pink?- Angus
Maybe orange- Abigail
I making orange- Harry
I might make purple- Phoebe
I'm using red. Then maybe yellow. I don't know what colour it will make- Lachlan

Using coloured water and pipettes the children started to mix the red and yellow together into class jars. There was lots of excitement as they observed their water changing colour. Some children's ideas were challenged while others found that their ideas were consolidated. It was wonderful watching them sharing with each other their learning and excitement.

Mine is still yellow. I need to add some red. My favourite colour is orange- Zac
I make orange- Alannah
Look he found orange! You got orange William!- Mack
Red makes orange. Look Mack red makes orange! I love orange!- William (exclaimed as he added red to his yellow water)

Next week we are going to focus mixing the primary colours blue and yellow. I wonder if you know what colour we might make?
