Mattingley

Dear Mattingley families and friends,
We have had a fantastic time this week exploring and deconstructing Antonio’s fax machine and Liam’s robotic vacuum cleaner.  Through our exploration we found many different parts to the machines and were able to work out how they helped make it work.

Mum used it to ring- Antonio
This is a screw driver. You use it to do this (showing us how to unscrew one of the screws) - William G

When we take the screws the things come out- Sophie

It got springs in it- Harrison

The rollers push paper- Harry H

The wires go together that make it roll the paper- Wolf
The wheels drives it (vacuum cleaner) you hammer them in with a hammer and you screw them in to hold things together. This bit here collects the dirt. If it didn’t then the house will be dirty- Liam

These are the wheels that make it go- Teddy
We look forward to continuing our learning journey next week by creating our own Marvellous Machines using all the boxes that our families have been bringing in over the last two weeks.
We will use what we have learnt from deconstructing machines to work out what parts to make for our box construction machines. If you still have any boxes at home we would love you to keep bringing them in. We can never have enough boxes.
Next week’s show and tell topic is: A machine that I use at home to make my life easier
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend,
Kimberley Mason & Coral Bowden

Edgerley

Dear Edgerley Parents,

The children have had a wonderful week continuing to explore machines in our Unit of Inquiry "Marvellous Machines". They have remained committed to deconstructing a variety of machines and are fascinated to look at the inners of these. We have told them they have to ask permission before deconstructing any machines at home!!

This week we have focused on investigating machines we use in the kitchen in particular. The children have compared machines that use electricity/batteries to those that are manual. They have also discussed ways they might be able to perform particular activities without machines to help us, which has highlighted how helpful machines are.

"You push this button. You need power. I'm just doing it to number 2. 5 will burn it. You press this button 'eject' to see if it is ready" - Oscar explained of his toaster.

"You could use an oven to make your own toast if you didn't have a toaster" David suggested.

"It's got a cord. It needs power. You turn on the switch and it starts popping" Ella shared of her popcorn machine.

"It spins round and round. It makes coffees and milkshakes. The power comes from the thing there (battery). If its flat then you put it in charge and it gets more charged" Denver told us of his milk frother.

"A mixer needs electricity. Then it goes by itself" - Andrei

"If you didn't have a mixer you need a whisk" - Stefan suggested.

"A bottle opener has no batteries or electricity. It's for the bottles that have corks in them" - Johnny described.

"A cupboard is not a machine because it has no electricity" - Varish clarified.

Thank you to Rana Hamood for coming in and helping Ben make Nutri Bullet smoothies for us all!

Best wishes,
Emma, Emma and Ty

Wilkins

Dear Wilkins Families

This week in the Wilkins room we have enjoyed practicing our fine motor skills with the scissors.
We then used the bits of paper we cut up to stick onto paper that we had hung on the easel.

We have also had lots of fun playing in our new cubby house. The new cubby has been put over in our jungle! The children have loved hiding in there and parking the trucks and cars in there.

This term our Unit of Inquiry is Marvellous Machines. Miss Nicole was lucky enough to find an old dvd player/ vcr that we have all enjoyed pulling apart. We all had a turn using a screwdriver to undo the screws before removing the cover to see what was inside.

Patrick- We open the buttons
James- I can't get it
Paige- I'll just help
Samuel H- I can't get it out

We will continue working on this experience over the coming weeks. If you have any old machines at home you're no longer using we would love to pull them apart in the Wilkins room.

The Wilkins children and staff are very excited to welcome back Miss Karla!!! but we would like to say a big thanks to Mrs Nacca for all her help!

Enjoy your weekend

Nicole, Ellen and Karla

Chapple

Dear Chapple families

A week in which we have explored the letter “A” through ants – marching and making. We have constructed and deconstructed. We also met up with our buddies to make some “social skills” footie cards.

The children have had great fun taking apart machines. “ The toaster had two brains!”
If you have any more we will gratefully receive them.

On Tuesday we have the Walk a Mile for the Hutt St Centre for the homeless. Please can the children bring in a gold coin donation to support the good work of the centre.

Langley

Dear Langley families and friends

We've been quite busy this week in the Langley room.

We had lots of fun working in the sandpit. Digging big holes, building tall sand castles, and the children even helped the educators with moving the play spaces around for something different.

In our new playspaces outside the children really enjoyed the art space. They did some glueing, drawing and painting. They loved the freedom of being able to explore their artistic ways outdoors.
They also love our new cubby in the garden area.

Miss Renee brought in some oranges for the children to try and we also made some delicious freshly squeezed orange juice which we tasted at afternoon tea on Thursday. Next week to follow on from that experience we will show the children how to make orange juice with an electric juicer rather than the hand juicer.

Our new friends are settling in really well and enjoying their new classroom. Some of their favourtie activities this week have been play dough, painting and the sorting corner.

We look forward to seeing you all next week and enjoy your weekend.

Miss Sarah, Miss Emily, Miss Brooke and Miss Renee

Mead

Dear Mead Room families,

This week we have deconstructed a machine that was no longer working.  We had a look to see if we could work out what this machine was used for;

Maxime – it’s a machine!
Christopher – it has paper in it
Louis – That’s a printer

We talked about what makes it a machine;

Lachlan – It does things for you
Benjamin G – I got a machine that dries up my clothes
Tate – We have a machine that you put food in and then it's hot
Benji – I got one that’s big and Mummy cooks things in it.

But how to pull it apart………
Maxime – Tools, you have tools
Louis – There’s screws in it
Ned – A screwdriver!

So we had a look and found lots of screws holding it together and used some brand new screwdrivers to dismantle the printer.

Spencer found pulleys and gears and was intrigued when they moved together. We’re still disassembling the printer and looking forward to finding more hinges, levers and tiny Phillips head screws to remove.

We celebrated two birthdays this week with both James and Addison turning 4, fed the chooks with Miss Renee and received an amazing photo of Hannah’s family who are visiting Egypt!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Melissa and Jain

Cooper

Dear Cooper families,

The Cooper room have had another wonderful week settling into the room. The children have been particularly excited about starting our PE sessions in the Prep school gym. It is quite an adventure walking down to the gym and looking all of the winter trees and collecting leaves along the way.

When the children were asked what they wanted to do at PE some of the responses were fast running and throwing balls. Luckily when we arrived at the gym we found that two of the activities that were provided were running and throwing balls!

The children had so much fun throwing, catching, kicking and bouncing a variety of different sized balls.

We had many running races where we had to hop, skip, run and even pretend we were ginormous dinosaurs. It was lots of fun.

Many of the Cooper children have been very interested creating wooden block buildings in the building area. The children have been using the toy tools to assist in their building projects. As this has been such a popular activity we will be building on this next week using real tools in group time activities.

Kind regards,

Maddie and Cris

Mattingley

Dear Mattingley families and friends,

We have had a fantastic start to our term beginning our investigation into 'Marvellous Machines'. We started our learning journey by brain storming what a machine is:

Trains are machines! They take people where they want to go- Liam

The trains have to have a thing to make the wheels go. My train has a battery- Harry BB

A fruit machine makes fruit. then it goes to juice. then it goes to fruit juice- Ashvin

I've got a machine in my home in my kitchen. It goes in circle to make my milk get warm. It's a microwave- Poppy

They can help us. there was a chair lift it go up and down taking us- Wolf

A washing machine. It washes the clothes if not they be all dirty- Aksel

In the block corner with Miss  Bowden , the children began to wonder how cars keep safe on the roads. This lead them to taking a closer look at a picture of a traffic light Miss Bowden found in the Advertiser. Using paper, coloured pencils and blocks they began to create their own traffic lights, discussing how they work to keep people safe. We look forward to learning more about the marvellous machines that we use in our everyday life next week.

Next weeks show and tell topic is: How I get to ELC.

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards,

Kimberley and Coral

Wilkins

Dear Wilkins families and friends,

What a wonderful first week back we have had. We have also welcomed some new friends in to the Wilkins room.

We have been enjoying making play-doh with Mrs Nicole. We have been choosing different colours and mixing the two to see what the outcome is.

Alexander – “hot hot hot!”

Paige – “Blue, bit warm!”

Haris – “Hot!”

We have also enjoyed looking at x-rays of bones on our overhead projector. We have been singing our favourite song Dem Bones on the laptop, and also trying to identify some of our own bones in our bodies.

The Wilkins children are very into their cutting and drawing. For a change we have decided to incorporate oil pastels. We have been experiementing with black paper. This has been lots of fun!

Thankyou Wilkins friends for another fun filled week in the room. Have a safe weekend, we look forward to seeing you all in the new term!

Love Mrs Nicole and Miss Ellen xxxx

Langley

Dear Langley Families and Friends
This week we enjoyed the start of the new term, by welcoming our new class mate!
We greeted our new friends Declan, Yobo, Hugo, Roman, Daniel, Fred, James, Larissa and Isaac to the Langley class with huge smiles and lots of hugs…
This week the class has really enjoyed sorting all the bits and pieces in our sensory corner, using the resources to their own incentive. There were some children that threaded the nuts, bolts and buttons onto pipecleaners to make bracelets and other amazing things. Hugo did a fantastic job lining the buttons up in a pattern, then threading the buttons on to the pipecleaner. Lachlan showed off his counting skills, counting each button.
In our music corner we danced to some rock and roll music that Oliver let us borrow. It was very funny to see some of the groovy dance moves that the children were doing, and the children thought Miss Renee’s moves were just as funny!
Have a lovely Weekend everybody.
From Miss Renee, Miss Sarah, Miss Emily and Miss Brooke.
