Loreto Vietnam Australia Program

Dear Parents of 3’s and 4’s,

You will have already received a sponsorship note for your child’s participation in a walk-a-thon next Monday, 25th August. All children will be participating in this wonderful event which will symbolise the 2 km walk that the Vietnamese children make to their schools every day, often without shoes. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to make a difference and show our support for this community service project.
Could we please have all sponsorship notes and money returned to your child’s teacher by Friday 29th August.

Thank you so much for your support for this wonderful cause,
Emma McKenzie – on behalf of the staff in the 3’s and 4’s

Early morning drop offs

Dear families,

Due to the cold weather in the mornings, we are no longer able to do early morning drop offs (before 8.15am) in The Workshop. To support our youngest students in their morning separation, drop offs before 8.15am will now be in the Langley Room which is one of the 2 year old rooms.

Langley

Dear Langley families,

Earlier this week we eagerly watched Billy, our class tadpole, "move house" from his jar to a big tank. Children have loved watching him swim around in his new home. Hopefully next week Billy will have more tadpole friends.
William - He's swimming in the water. In the rocks. He can't get out.
Charlie - fishy swim.

Also this week children have explored sensory beads on the light table, and have been very creative at our collage table, gluing, sticking and cutting many colourful creations.

Don't forget about our Book Week Parade, next Tuesday. Children are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite character from a book.

Enjoy the weekend!

Wilkins

Dear families,

We have recently introduced some new resources to the block corner and the children have been very keen to use these to build, create and construct but they have also been creating a range of different patterns. The children have been working individually and in small groups as they pattern. They have been sharing resources and observing each other’s ideas, using these to influence their own play.
The jungle animal play has also been a hive of activity this week. The children have been using their knowledge and imaginations in their play, sharing story lines and creating animal families. They have been matching, sorting and grouping animals as well as acting out the different noises the animals make.

We are looking to sharing in Book Week celebrations next week. Don’t forget that Tuesday is our dress up day – come dressed as your favourite story book character and bring along the book to share in class.
Best wishes for a great weekend.

Karla, Amy and Jess

Cooper

Hello Cooper friends and family

This week we have been exploring the overhead projector and how it projects shapes and colour onto the wall. The children were fascinated at seeing their hands projected and seeing them grow in size. Next week we will extend on this experience by introducing shadow puppet story telling.

We have also been exploring the outdoor yard for shadows. Once we had located them the children experimented with the different things that they could get their shadow to do. We discovered that shadows can dance, run, walk and jump. We also discovered that our shadows can overlap when we're standing near another person.

Have a great weekend!

Mattingley

Dear Mattingley Families and Friends,
Wow! What a busy week we have had in our classroom. We started the week on Monday by celebrating our friend Aiden's birthday. He decided that he would like to have decorated biscuits to share with his friends. With the help from Miss Bowden the children worked together to mix up some fantastic green icing and set to work decorating their yummy treat. Afterwards, using a number four birthday candle, they all sang 'Happy birthday' to Aiden. The biscuits didn't last long after they had finished singing. It was a lovely celebration.
We have been working on our special surprises for Big Boys Breakfast. The children are all really looking forward to celebrating this fantastic event with the special men in their lives. If you haven't done so yet please remember to send in your RSVP's and questionnaires. We look forward to seeing as many of you as we can on the day.
Just a quick reminder that next week is 'Book Week' and to celebrate we are having a dress up day next Tuesday (19/08/14). We would like to encourage your child to dress up as their favorite character from a book. If they have a copy of the book it would be lovely if they brought it in to share with their friends. We will be having a parade in the Town Square at around 9.30am. If you child does not attend on this day but would like to be a part of the celebration please feel free to bring them along for the parade as long as there is an adult staying with them. We look forward to seeing all the fantastic characters the children think of.
Now what will the teachers dress up as.......??
Have a lovely weekend,
The Mattingley Team.

Mead

Dear Mead Room families,

This week our unit of inquiry saw us turn our attention to some of the differences between night and day.
Sterling – In the day I see the sun and at night I see the moon
Bernie – I see stars
We then discussed some of the phases of the moon.
Sterling – sometimes it’s a full moon and sometimes it’s a half moon, and sometimes its an empty moon.
Finny - I see a big round moon in the night
Bernie – the half moon looks like a banana
Stephen – the full moon looks like an orange
And then we discovered that some animals like to be awake at night.
Angus – the owls
Bernie – bats
Lachlan – Possums are awake at night
Sterling – there was an exhibit at the zoo and its very dark and you need to be quiet – the animals are nocturnal.

Our Minnie Pwerle studio has been a hive of activity with the children showing great interest in exploring the differences between light and dark.  We have used the artwork created by Minnie Pwerle (1910—2006)as a provocation to explore the contrasting effects on black paper.

Have a great weekend.
Melissa and Renee

Edgerley

Dear Parents and Friends,

We have had so much fun continuing our investigations this week… orange juice, wind chimes, shadow play, painting birds and seeing our buddies. Oliver B’s Dad’s camping talk would have to rate as a real highlight… Sean shared some of his camping adventures with us, the children’s eyes got wider and wider as he spoke of tigers, crocodiles and even a rhino that he saw whilst camping in Nepal. He shared 4 important things to remember about camping…
1. Shelter/ protections
2. Food
3. Water
4. Leave the place as you found it!

He brought some interesting camping tools to share with us including a first aid kit, a backpack that turns into a stool and even a swag. It was so much fun for the boys to climb through and explore. The children were captivated! Thank you so much Sean!

We are looking forward to celebrating Book Week next week… don’t forget… Dress Up Day on Tuesday!

Thank you so much for your support,
Pip, Emma, Ty and Rosalie

Chapple

Week 4 saw the launch of our rocket and Mrs Kerr worked with the children to build an amazing cabin.
Angus: This is a bit like slot cars. I did a bit extra to make it more staple (stable) and it doesn’t fall on people. What’s that bit for?
Mrs Kerr: Let’s look at our plan.
Angus: Don’t forget the seats. We need two chairs and buttons and switches. The plunger to steer.
Tom: Things to make it go.
Alex: It needs a shelf.
Erik: Put it on-fix it.
Will: We need buttons, a computer.
Dougal: How will we blast off? Do we have a blast off button?

Once it was finished it was blast off time!
The children extended the seating to allow more crew and organised themselves for a mission to the stars. Olympia even made maps. The cabin has loads of lights and buttons and a joystick to steer. The children had great fun plotting the journey through the planets.

Olympia: Mars up there.
David: Jupiter!
Toby: I can see the moon too!
Boasi pressing buttons and Toby steering.
Olympia (pointing): Neptune!
Boasi: I’m the driver- Ready to go?
Toby: I’m the sensible driver.
Boasi: I can see loads of them.
Olympia: Blast off!
Boasi: 5,4,3,2,1! Ready.
Olympia (using her fingers to count along): 5,4,3,2,1!

Then Mrs Shakespear taught us all about the phases of the Moon with her yummy Moon Cookies.

Angwin

Dear Angwin Parents and Friends,

We have been having a fantastic and exciting time in Angwin. We have downloaded some yoga and relaxation apps and been exploring many new poses. Its been great fun and is helping us relax and stretch our bodies at the end of each busy day. We also explore meditation by listening to relaxing stories that encourage visualisation and imagination. Poses we have learned this week include the butterfly, the treetop, warrior pose and child’s pose. Some of the children are very flexible and have great balance! We will continue to learn new poses and learn about other ways to relax and keep ourselves healthy. Please ask your children to show you some of their favourite poses!

We are looking forward to Book Week next week and seeing everyone dressed as their favourite book character! Feel free to use our photo booth to take a photo of you with your child. It will be just outside our door for you to use when you like!

Have a good weekend.
