Edgerley Room

Our investigations about shadows has taken the Edgerley class around the world....... their interest in the world, globes and countries has lead us to looking at books about people from around the world. One amazing fact we discovered was - that we are all the same (people), yet different! We ALL have hair, but it is different, we ALL have noses but they are different shapes and sizes, and we ALL have eyes but they too are not all the same. We took photos of our eyes to see how different they really are. It was so tricky to tell whose eyes they were and we then discovered that "YES" we are all boys who have two eyes, but our eyes are all different shapes, sizes and colours. These are displayed on our classroom windows...... can you guess which eye belong to each child?Keep an 'eye out' for more photographed features that will be put on display.
Regards,
Rosalie and Mel

Langley
What a busy last week of term we have had in the Langley room! We have been wrapping up our investigations into light and dark, shadows, reflections and day and night. We have also continued observing our feathered visitors at the ELC and have documented what we have seen using paint and collage materials. The children eagerly participated in Sports Day on Wednesday as we joined the rest of the Preparatory School in the gym for health hustle before returning to the ELC for a morning full of fun and fitness; we played ball games, had running races, practised our balancing and climbing and a whole lot more.
“We do some axisise (exercise)” Oliver L told us
“We’re in Taylor, dragon. I hitting the ball” Henry reflected
“I did help pussel (health hustle)” Tommi said
Thank you to the parents and grandparents who joined us during the morning, it was wonderful to have you involved.
Kind regards
Jess, Adele, Kerry and Jennifer

Mead
Dear Mead Parents,
We started with a huge health hustle...............to warm up for the day's events ahead! There was great enthusiasm and excitement as we then moved outside to our circle games. The Mead children played Duck, Duck, Goose and Fruit Salad - with many parents joining is. Some of us were so keen to run we headed half way to Melbourne before being brought back to our friends!
After our running races we relaxed over a break, eating some fruit prepared by Mr Rob. It was just what was needed before heading back out to the oval for the parent races. Some parents were so enthusiastic we saw children on shoulders and in all sorts of positions while they ran together! Henry told his mum to "Let go (of his hand) 'cos you're slowing me down"!
To give the mums and dads a break after their races, we moved to the tabloid events before we were all presented with ribbons at the conclusion of the Sports Day. The Year 5 boys did a fantastic job running these activities and helping out. What a great day!
Best wishes,
Emma, Susan and Emma

Cooper
The Cooper children have been interested in colour and light this term. We wondered about coloured things that you could see light through and on Tuesday we decided to make jelly!
“I can’t see anything in the water” said Chester looking for the dissolved crystals.
“The powder gone into the jelly” noticed Henry.
“Maybe they sinked” suggested Joshua S.
“We put cold water in to make it warm” said Samuel.
“It’s bery bery hot” said Lucy.
“It smells like grapes” said Apollon sniffing the mixture.
The jelly was poured into glass moulds and left in Mr Rob’s fridge to set. Later we got the set jelly out and put it on top of our light box. We could see green red and yellow shining through the wobbly jelly and we could see each other's colour faces when we peeped through! Finally everyone had some yummy jelly to eat. We wonder if it changed the colour of our tummies?!
Kind regards,
Ali and Susan

Chapple
This week has been a super busy week in the Chapple Room! After being inspired by the Grade 6 Exhibition, Chapple Room hosted our very own Exhibition based on our inquiry into the Solar System. We were able to present to each class in the Early Learning Centre our Space Facts Book, sing our fabulous Space Song and share our Spacey Classroom with our ELC friends. Each Chapple student stood up in front of each class to share their facts. For some of our students this was a big step!
Sports Day was a huge success. We all had a wonderful day cheering each other on and being so happy that we all tried our best!
We wish Ms Giorgio all the very best as she moves to Ireland. We will miss her so much. She has been an enormous asset to the Chapple Room and the ELC and given so much to each child. She will be truly missed by all of us. Here are a few special words from her…
“I’d like to say thank you so much for having me as part of your children’s lives for the past terms. I have learnt a lot from them and I hope that I have left them with something meaningful. A phrase that has been banned in my home is ‘Did I tell you? Today…’ as I tell stories about the amazing things your children have done during the day. I wish for them all success and enjoyment for the next part of their learning journey as they go on to ‘Big School’. I know that they will shine in all their endeavours.”
See you after the holidays,
Kate and Juliana

Immunisation Records

We are still missing quite a few children's immunisation records. If you have not done so could you please provide us with a copy asap,

thankyou

Hats and sunscreen

Please remember that all children should now be bringing their hats each day . We are also applying sunscreen to the children before outdoor play in the afternoons and ask that parents apply it before school in the mornings. Please make sure you use a 30+ 4 hour sunscreen to cover these times .We use Woolworths Homebrand as it comes in economical 1 litre pump packs and is easy to obtain. All sunscreens, by law, must be the rating that they state on the container. If your child has an allergy to this product could you please provide an alternate brand labelled with your child's name and inform the staff in their room.

Thankyou

Cooper Room Speech Screenings

In the Classrooms

Langley
We have continued our investigation into light and dark through experimenting with sand on the light table. We have discovered that when you move the sand out the way, the light can shine through. It has been lots of fun creating all sorts of pictures, patterns and writing. Thank you to all the families who came to celebrate ArtsPACes with us on Wednesday night. We were all very excited to share our movies with you in our spectacular Shadowlands movie theatre. If you were unable to join, keep an eye out for a copy of the movie in your Learning Portfolio next time you take it home. We look forward to participating in our sports day Wednesday, make sure you check your pigeon hole for details.
Kind regards,Jess, Adele, Kerry and Jennifer

Mead
Dear Mead Parents,
We have been very excited with the feathered friends that have been visiting our outdoor area. While we sit and eat, we watch the parrots, listen to their chatter and talk about their activities. Our painting easels have seen alot of activity this week with children creating their own impressions of the parrots. Some beautiful work has been produced. Please take a moment to look at the whole ELC parrot display in progress which is in the courtyard cafe area.
Best wishes,
Emma, Susan and Emma

Cooper
As we continued our investigation into towers, the Cooper children went to visit Erin's Daddy's office on the third floor of the big building. Erin had invited us to come and see the lions and tigers through the window at the top of the building, so we decided to go and investigate. It turned out that we couldn't see any wild animals but there were buses on Dequetteville Terrace. While we were upstairs the ladies in the finance office showed us the view from their balcony - we could see big boys playing football, the roofs of buildings and even the ELC from up there!
As we were carefully going down the many stairs, we bumped into Mr Tutt and he offered to take the children to see a secret tower! We followed him around the big old building, he opened a door with his keys and we found... even more stairs! Again the children climbed right to the top of the building and this time we could see into the top of a leafy tree. What an adventure! Thank you to Mr Tutt, Mr Lyne and everyone who helped us with our exploring.
Kind regards,
Ali and Susan

Chapple
Chapple’s Space Station is in top working order and the Chapple astronauts have been busy going on space missions to the Moon, to Jupiter, to the Asteroid Belt and many far-away places in search of rock samples. We’ve brought our rocks back to the Chapple Space Station to observe them and to record and describe their characteristics. It’s proved to be an excellent writing experience and also a chance to capture the imaginations of these young space explorers!
“Look at this one,” said Hamish excitedly, “It's gigantic!”
“It looks so so large in the magnifying glass,” agreed Lloyd.
“This one has holes in it and it's white. It’s from up in space from a planet. I went there!” told Finn obviously very impressed with his findings!
“This one is chalky so I think it’s from the moon,” Sebastian piped in as he looked at the white one with Finn.
Connor then told his fellow astronauts, “This one has sparkly bits in it so maybe it grew from the stars.”
“Oooooh, feel this one,” shared Sam G, “It’s cold and smooth and soft but hard.”
As the boys bounced their findings from one astronaut to the other they recorded their descriptions onto note paper and sent it through to Max to be typed up for their records.
Please come into the classroom and spend a few moments with your child:
· Reading Chapple’s Space Facts Book
· Counting numbers 0 – 50 on the floor!
· Sharing the facts we’ve recalled by looking at our galaxy wall (window near the bathrooms)
· Looking at our classmade Solar System and asking your child questions about it
· Playing in our Space Station

Edgerley
This week we enjoyed learning about the game of chess. Angus brought his chess set from home and tutored us on the finer points. He shared with us the names of all of the pieces…we all liked the horse but Mrs Bishop liked the… bishop! Surprise surprise! Chess is very tricky and so next week we will begin to record the rules that we know. Did you know that pawns are very speedy when they start but then they have to slow right down after they have had their first turn?!
We have enjoyed the warm weather and blue skies, making the most of time in the garden and on the oval. We have practiced for sports day every day this week and on Thursday were even helped by the year five boys who helped us remember to run in between the lines. They let us ride on their backs and we all had a piggy back race, it was lots of fun. Mr Waters from year one tried to join in our game of fruit salad but he kept forgetting the rules and tried to eat the bananas! In the end we had to stop the game because we were all laughing so much. Mr Waters had to leave with an empty tummy!!! We will be keeping an eye out for him when we move to the big school next year!
What a great week!

Mel and Rosalie

ELC- JP Sportsday 2010

Sports Day is nearly here!!! It’s time to get out the face paint and hair spray and support your team. We have been excitedly learning about our house groups and who are in our team and the children are eagerly looking forward to the day. If you are a parent who is joining us on the day please feel free to dress in your child’s house colour (as zany as you would like!). We are looking for two parent helpers from each class to assist staff with the children’s movement throughout the day. We are also looking for any parents who would be happy to take some photographs for us, as staff will have their hands full with leaping, jumping and running! If you would like to assist or take photos of the children in your child’s class on our behalf please drop and e-mail to Mrs Bishop at mbishop@pac.edu.au. And finally we are also looking for one or two helpers who would be happy to assist Mr Wagenfeller bring up our snack at snack time from the ELC to the handball courts beside the gym.
Can’t wait to see you there. Don’t forget to bring your cheering voices and running shoes (we do not suggest high heels on the oval, it can make it hard going!)
Cheers
Mel Bishop

Third Term Holidays

The third term is almost over and the holidays are upon us. For those who are attending during the two week break, the extended care program is now displayed above the parents and friends representatives photos. So come and have a look to see what's happening.
Wednesday the 6th of October is wheels day and all 3-4 year old children are welcome to bring along helmets, scooters, roller blades, small bikes or tricycles. Please name all items from home so we can be sure to return them to their rightful owners.
If your child will be absent during part or all of the holiday break please let Mrs Porter know as soon as possible.
Thanks a bunch,
Todd Kerber

artsPACes 2010

Thankyou to the families who joined us last Wednesday evening for the artsPACes extravaganza. It was a truly wonderful evening that allowed all students from the ELC and Prep school to showcase their work and talents. Evidence of true inquiry and engagement was everywhere! The highlight for many of our younger students was being able to view the Year Five dance performance in the dark with glow sticks! Our Shadowlands Cinema was well patronised and we received much positive feedback about the efforts and investigations of our Princes ELC student.
Thankyou again

In the Classrooms

Langley
The Langley children have been exploring how light moves and reflects using torches and lamps in our little dark tent. They have been fascinated with the star lamp which looks like the night sky reflecting on the roof! If you put your hand over the top, or your face, the stars show up on there as well! We’ve been singing ‘put a spot over there’ as we move the torch around the room to see where it will appear. It’s been on the roof, on the ground, on the couch and on our bodies. It’s very exciting to see who can find the spot first!
Kind regards,Jess, Adele, Kerry and Jennifer

Mead

Dear Parents,
While we have been exploring 'Shadowlands' this term, the Mead children have shown a huge interest in nocturnal animals. We have been reading lots of books about nocturnal animals and have been making some amazing animals out of junk materials to house in our nocturnal corner in the classroom. There was great excitement when we announced to the children that we were going to visit the nocturnal house at the Adelaide Zoo! The excursion was a wonderful opportunity for the children to see some nocturnal friends scurrying around and hiding in caves and trees. The bat and potoroo enclosure was highly entertaining with a great action for the children to watch! Once we left the Nocturnal House we all enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the Zoo stopping to look at animals that took the children's fancy, before meeting in the rotunda for a picnic lunch. A huge thank you to all the parent helpers for your time and assistance in making the day such a success.
Best Wishes,
Emma, Susan and Emma

Cooper
This week we have been reading Baby Bilby Where Do You Sleep? in Cooper room in preparation for our trip to the zoo. The children have been thinking about and discussing nocturnal animals and were very keen to find a bilby at the zoo... and guess what? We did! The Nocturnal House was very exciting (and no one was afraid of the dark). We saw many night creatures but by far the most popular were the bats which were flying spectacularly across their enclosure and hanging upside down. Outside we enjoyed the beautiful sunny weather and saw many favourite animals and enjoyed a picnic lunch in the rotunda. We had fantastic help from our Cooper parents who joined us for the excursion - they did a brilliant job! Thanks!
Kind regards,
Ali and Susan

Chapple
Chapple Room has been intrigued with our Solar System and what lies beyond! We’ve been so interested that we’ve learnt that there are facts about space that are real and true; things that astronomers and scientists know to be correct. We have even made our very own Solar System! We’ve also created a book to record all these things and to help teach you some of the things we know! Please come in and read this book with your child we’re sure you will learn so much! Here’s a sneak preview:

· The moon looks like it changes shape. There isn’t any water or air or animals or plants on the moon.
· A group of stars is called a galaxy. Our galaxy is the Milky Way.
· Space has many different temperatures. Some are so hot and some are so so cold.
· Saturn’s rings are made out of ice and rock dust.
· Jupiter is very hot. Jupiter has a Great Red Spot. It is a huge storm.
· There are more than 60 moons for Jupiter.
· The Earth is the third planet from the Sun and we live there.
· Asteroids can be made out of stone, rock or metal. Some have big holes in them.
· The first man on the moon was Mr Armstrong and ‘Buzz’ Aldrin.
· Big dishes can hear messages and signals from space. The Parkes dish helped the world hear about our first visit to the moon.
· There are lots of volcanoes and lava on one of Jupiter’s moons.
· If you go to the moon you would be squashed as flat as a pancake. It has really big gravity.

On Thursday we had a wonderful time at the zoo! It was so exciting to venture into the Nocturnal House and we were fascinated with the bats especially! All the various primates were also a big hit. A special thank you to the wonderful Chapple Parents and Grandies who supported us on this field trip!
Kind regards,
Kate and Juliana

Edgerley
We have enjoyed creating our space story for artsPACes this week using our video camera and dictaphone. We particularly enjoyed listening to our own voices played back to us. We used lots of different types of shadows and reflections to build our story about going to the moon. We hope that some of our parents can visit the Shadowlands Cinema during artsPACes and view what we have created.
We enthusiastically traipsed around the zoo yesterday and were amazed at the facts we already knew and could share about animals. Julian was able to teach us something new before we even got on the bus, showing us the grooves on the ground at the bus stop that help blind people know where to stand and wait. It was quite a wait for the bus but we enjoyed sticking our hand out when we saw number 141 coming down the street. At the zoo we loved the cheeky bilby and bats that hopped and flew in front of us at the nocturnal house and particularly enjoyed watching and listening to the meerkats. Luca did a great job of following the map and telling us where we needed to go. After the zoo we had a run on the lawn, turned cartwheels with Mr Kerber and had a climb in the roots of the ’monkey’ tree, the perfect thing for a glorious sunny day. What a wonderful trip and thankyou to all of our parent helpers.
Regards
Mel and Rosalie

Children have been allocated house groups and these have been posted in the lobby as you enter the ELC. If your child has a relative who attended PAC and was in a different coloured house please e-mail Mrs Bishop at mbishop@pac.edu.au to have your child’s house allocation changed. Whilst old houses no longer exist we would like children to be in the closest house colour that their family have historically belonged to. If children have a sibling in the Prep school their house will be the same as their older siblings. All children may dress in their house colours on the day. Parents are welcome to join us and help out.
Kind Regards

Binoculars For Our Rainbow Visitor

Dear Parents,
Every day at snack time we are visited by a rainbow feathery flurry on our rooftop beside the café. A pair of rainbow lorikeets entertain the children by strutting along the roof line, hanging from the corners and stretching their wings and chatting and chirruping away. We have responded to the children’s strong interest in this by setting up an observation table in the café. We would like to borrow a few pairs of very sturdy binoculars for the children to get a closer look. If you have a set of binoculars that can cope with little hands that you would happy to loan us for the next two weeks please pass them to Mrs Porter for our observational table.
Thankyou for your support
Mel Bishop

Old Feather Boas

Many of us have an old feather boa left over from a long forgotten costume lying around the house. As we begin to learn more about our friendly parrots we would love any old feather boas to use in our craft. If you would like to donate any please pass them to Mrs Porter. They will be gratefully received and recycled into beautiful art work for your walls!!

Shoeboxes of Love

A reminder re: Final Collection for Shoeboxes of Love. Let's have last great serge of donations to help us make up some wonderful boxes. We are still looking for exercise books, pencil cases and pencils. We also still require some donations of material and some sewing helpers as we are short around 40 bags. If you can donate 2m of strong, colourful material or are able to sew up some simple bags please let Mrs Lock know.

Chapple Room Staffing

Dear Parents ,

Sadly we will be saying farewell to Miss Juliana Giorgio on October 1st. Juliana's partner is Irish and he is returning to Ireland for approximately 12 months. Juliana has decided to follow her heart and go with him.
We have appreciated her enthusiasm and sense of humour and I know that both the staff and children will miss her valuable contribution to the ELC.
We are currently in the process of appointing a new assistant for Chapple Room and will let you know as soon as this is finalised.

In the Classrooms

Langley
What busy workers we have had in the Langley room this week! The children have been very keen to dress up in the builder’s costumes and have busied themselves fixing the playground and building all sorts of imaginary constructions using a range of different tools, complete with sound effects! Thank you to all the Dads who were able to join us for the Big Boys Breakfast on Thursday, it was lovely to spend some time with you and we were pleased to share our special songs with you even if we didn’t want to leave you afterwards! If you were unable to attend, can we please ask that you still return your Father’s Day surveys to be placed in your child’s portfolio along with their portraits.
Kind regards,Jess, Adele, Kerry and Jennifer

Mead
Dear Mead Room Parents,
It has been another busy week with lots of activities and many of them revolving around preparation for the Big Boys Breakfast which was held bright and early this morning. The children have done a wonderful job drawing their dads, telling us why their dads are so special to them, making their Father's Day gifts and singing beautifully on stage at the breakfast. Have a fantastic Father’s Day on Sunday Mead dads and keep up the great jobs you are doing - you mean a lot to your children.
Best Wishes,
Emma and Susan

Cooper
We were all up bright and early for the Big Boys Breakfast on Thursday morning! It was great to have so many Dads and excited Cooper children join us for a yummy cooked breakfast and a little concert. The children were delighted to give their Dads the special presents we have been working on this week and to show them the special blue Dad pictures the children had created. The children sang Tiny Tim the Turtle (one of our favourites!) and the Chinese Family song beautifully and very confidently up on the stage. Thank you to all the Dads who have returned their Father's Day surveys - and if you haven't yet, there is still time, we would like to put them in your children's portfolios. We hope all our Cooper Dads have a fantastic day on Sunday!

Chapple
Chapple Room discovered our address in the Universe. It is:
ELC, PAC, Adelaide, Australia, Southern Hemisphere, Earth, our Solar System, Solar Neighbourhood, Orion’s Arm, Milky Way, local galaxies, Virgo Super Cluster, the Universe.
Wow – what a mouthful! We are learning so much about what is in our Solar System. We’re imagining we’re going to Space so we’re turning our classroom into Space! It’s so exciting. Some of us have been studying moon dust and moon rocks, looking for signs of life, while others of us have been replicating the planets to make our own Solar System.
We’ve also become interested in magnets after learning about gravity and force.
“You can’t see the strength that a magnet has,” stated Max.
“Magnets are quite sticky things, but it’s not sticky like honey,” explained Sam W.
Tyler told us, “You can’t see the force, but there’s force. Force means it can stick together and pull.”
Kind regards,
Kate and Juliana

Edgerley
This week in Edgerley we explored the wonderful world of reflection. We enjoyed experimenting with mirrors and the overhead projector and looked around our classroom to find other objects that might make a reflection. CD’s worked really well. Now we are thinking about what is the same about mirrors and CDs that let them make reflections. Do you think you know the answer? Our boys think that perhaps they “are both glassy”! Hmmmmm, maybe? We will continue to explore reflection next week as we add to our reflective orbs for artsPACes.
Regards
Mel and Rosalie

Thanks Big Boys

Dear Dads,
Thanks for coming to our Big Boys Breakfast and joining us in the John Dunning gym. We hope you enjoyed your breakfast and our (very quiet) concert! The children certainly enjoyed it and talked about it for the rest of the day. Rest assured that those children who were a little upset at saying goodbye to their dads settled within five minutes of returning to the ELC. We all enjoyed sharing your survey responses, if you have not already returned them please pass them to your child's teacher for your child to share with their peers. Thankyou for your donations to Beyond Blue. For those of you who would still like to donate, Mrs Porter will be collecting donations over the next week. Thankyou for your generosity.
Happy Fathers Day for this Sunday
The ELC staff

We’re Going to the Zoo Zoo Zoo!

Zoo Excursion this Thursday!

Thank you to the many parents who have kindly offered to help with our Zoo excursion on Thursday. Please make sure that you are at the ELC at 9.15am as we will be leaving at 9.30am. If you have not done so already, please pay your $22 entry fee to Mrs Porter. Families who are zoo members are entitled to free entry but will need to bring their membership cards with them to be shown at the zoo gate. All parent helpers will also need $2.80 to pay for their bus ticket. We intend to return to the ELC by 1.30pm.
Please note that children will require their ELC hats and good shoes for walking for this excursion (and rain coats if it is raining on the day).
Thankyou
Mrs Ali Blake

Parent Teacher Interviews

Dear Parents,
Parent Teacher interview spaces for all classes are available to booked through Mrs Porter at the front desk. Interview days will be on the 13th, 14th and 20th of September. Please see Mrs Porter to book a convenient time.

Car Safety

In response to a concerned parent’s observation we would like to remind parents that, legally, all children must remain seated and belted until you have turned your car engine off in our car park. Please do not allow your child to unbelt themselves and stand in their seat whilst your car is moving. Information about child/vehicle safety has been placed in all children’s pigeon holes this week for your information.

New jackets

Our new ELC jackets are are now available from the uniform shop. We know that it is officially spring but it appears from today that we have lots more wet weather in store ! The jackets are generously sized to allow for growth and are fleecy lined for warmth (the hood zips away into the collar.)If your child normally wears a jacket to the ELC ,then this one is our preference. If your child will be leaving us for school shortly then we do not expect that you purchase one.

Spare clothes

Our supply of spare clothing seems to have disappeared. If your child has come home in any of our spare clothes could you please return them as soon as possible. All children MUST have a full change of clothes in their bag each day in case of accidents of any kind (including shoes if possible)

Thankyou

Immunisation Records

If you have not already supplied us with a copy of your child's immunisation record could you please do this asap. It is part of our license conditions that we need to keep these records as it enables us to track any children at risk if there is an outbreak of any immunisable disease. If we do not have this information we will assume that your child is not immunised and they will need to be excluded from the centre when any of these diseases are present. If you have provided this information already but your child has had further immunisations since that time could you please give us an updated copy.
If your child is not immunised for any reason please make sure that you have let us know this also.

Thankyou

Jeanine
