Dear Parents and Friends,

We have been loving our investigations into Chinese New Year. The children have heard stories in Chinese about the dragon who the people are trying to scare away by dancing and using loud music. On Thursday we welcomed some of the instruments whilst they made the lion dance. Then we enjoyed a special Chinese lunch together.

We have been working to set up a Chinese restaurant in our room, deciding what we need and how we will set it up together. The children have made signs and are going to work on some menus and price boards. We are decorating this space with a spectacular dragon and some lovely bright lanterns.

Together with our Year 3 buddies we have made our own lion puppets using collage materials.

James Mc D: We saw a lion and I helped paint my own dragon.

Archie: The big boys were inside a big lion and it scared us!

Knox: When I made my lion my buddy cut out the teeth and stuck them on.

Nathan: Miss Sue made us fried rice which is Chinese food.

Toby: I brought my Chinese lion in from home.

Campbell B: When I played the drum for the lion dance I loved it. The big boys dressed up.

Jack Mc K: I liked seeing the lion. I liked eating the special lunch.

Happy Chinese New Year!

The ELC loved having some of our International students do a special Lion Dance for us to celebrate Chinese New Year. They made some special drumming music and we helped with our percussion instruments to help the lion dance. It was a wonderfully rich cultural experience for all our children to appreciate.

Hello Cooper friends and families

We have had a very busy week in the Cooper Room. On Tuesday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with the class, cooking delicious pancakes. We also had a visit from three police officers from one of the Adelaide’s Police Stations. They talked with the class about what to do when you get lost, we got to hold a pair of hand cuffs, try on a police hat and we were also able to sit in the police cars and listen to the very loud sirens!

On Thursday we celebrated Chinese New Year with a spectacular Lion Dance performed by some  senior school international students. All of the children worked together to create some loud music to create a magical atmosphere. Some of the Cooper children also participated in the dance by feeding the big lion!

Mead

We are excited that our ‘Change’ unit of inquiry is continuing to be so relevant and occurring in Mead Room almost daily!  All of our tiny caterpillars grew rapidly to become big, fat caterpillars and then just as swiftly changed to the next stage of their development – the beautiful chrysalis. We have had two butterflies emerge from their chrysalis so far this week which has been an amazing experience.  We noticed that the chrysalis became transparent and the monarch butterfly’s beautiful orange and black wings became visible;

After the butterfly had spent some time drying out its wings and practicing the tricky art of wing flapping we took it outside and watched in amazement as it tentatively took to the air! 

This week also included a visit from SAPOL – three officers from the Norwood Police Station let us get up close and personal with their vehicles! Sirens, police hats, flashing lights and high vis vests were the order of the day.  We learned that police officers make sure our community is safe and police vehicles have sirens so they can let people know they are coming and to move out of the way!

And… we observed Shrove Tuesday, plus the astonishing ‘Lion Dance’ performed by some of our very talented senior school students to celebrate Chinese New Year! 

It has been an extraordinarily busy week.

 

On a staffing note, Ms Kendall has decided not to continue in her full time role as co-educator for personal reasons but will be available for relief work on occasions. The lovely Miss Emma has been assisting in the Mead classroom as we seek another co-educator to assist Mrs Prest. We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time. We will inform you of the new co-educator as soon as we can.

Mattingley

Dear Mattingley families and friends,

What a busy week we have had in the Mattingley classroom this week. On Tuesday we had three wonderful SAPOL Police Officers visit our centre to talk with us about what to do if we get lost. We also got to try on a Police hat, hold their handcuffs and listen to the loud siren on the Police car. 

We also celebrated Shrove Tuesday by cooking some delicious pancakes and eating them together. They were very yummy. 

To finish off our busy week we celebrated the Chinese New Year with some International Students from the senior school coming down to perform a Lion dance for us in the Town Square. We loved being a part of the performance by playing musical instruments very loudly with some children being brave enough to feed the lion as it danced past us.

Langley

What a fun filled week we had with numerous celebrations and a special visit from the police. The start of the week was a very busy time with two special events on the same day. We were very lucky to have had a demonstration from some police officers, sirens sounding and lights flashing, it was all very exciting. The officers spoke to the children about being safe and if ever in trouble to call the police. It was very beneficial for the children to have an opportunity to ask questions and interact with the very important people that police officers are. These are some of the comments that the children said about the police visit.

 The class made pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, some of the children helped add the ingredients while others used their strong muscles to mix the batter. During this cooking experience the children enjoyed watching the reaction of the batter once heated. There was plenty of excitement once the pancakes begun to take their shapes. The smell of the pancakes was amazing and there were lots of little noses inhaling the smell, not to mention there were little mouths that enjoyed the taste as well. Also during the week we celebrated Chinese New Year with a traditional lion dance. The dance was fantastic, with the noise of the drums and the cheers from the audience.  Also in celebration of the Chinese New Year Mrs Sue and Mrs Robina made a delicious Chinese banquet that the children enjoyed.

Langley

This week in the Langley room we were very busy. On Monday children helped make sand dough and explored with sea shells and cuttlefish.

A few of our friends love to dance and sing so we set up a stage and the children danced all week long. Some of the children requested their favourite songs, we played them and they even gave it a go singing into the microphone. We love dancing in the Langley room.

As it was quite hot this week we spent most of our time inside, although when we made it outside the children enjoyed some water play and painting.

We are putting together a Langley family photo wall and are asking parents to bring in a photo of your family for us to display.

Edgerley

Dear Parents and Friends,

This week in our show and tell programme we have been exploring the ways we are unique. The children have brainstormed ideas at home and then shared these ideas with the class. It has been exciting to see how proud they are to celebrate their uniqueness!

We have had a water world built on our light table, with 5 different slides… and our animals have had so many enclosures built to house them.

We have been exploring ways of celebrating love for Valentine’s Day and different ways that people share their good luck and prosperity for Chinese New Year, which we are celebrating next Thursday. We have some senior school boys coming down to do a lion dance for us!

Our class loved seeing our Year 3 buddies and each of the boys have been assigned an older boy to work with them each week. We will be making up a poster so you can see them too!

Thank you for the wonderful attendance at our parent meeting on Wednesday. For those not able to be there, a handout has been placed in your son’s locker.

Cooper

Hello Cooper friends and families

This week the Cooper children have been sharing their ‘All about me’ posters with the class. This has been a great opportunity for the children to talk about the important people in their life. It’s not too late to bring your poster in!

This week we also started to talk with the class about the different emotions we can feel when playing with our friends and family. The children  have been exploring the emotion posters displayed in the class and have been talking with each other about when they have encountered some of the emotions.

The class have also been busy  adding colour to an enlarged copy of their term 1 self-portrait. The children have been using a variety of fluro water colours to add another dimension to their beautiful portraits. They are now on display on the class windows.
