The children have been very busy preparing for Grandies Day and are looking forward to showing their special visitors the ELC. (Miss Sue also has some surprises up her sleeve!!)

The RSVP's are coming in thick and fast but we still need some more replies!

Dear Mead Room families,

What a wonderful week we have experienced in the Mead Room this week.

We have welcomed Miss Gilbert to our room, talked about friends and the special people that we know, investigated the new additions to our outdoor learning environment, made playdough and explored how it changes when you use natural resources and wished Jack Woodrow a very special birthday!

Scarlet – you can show someone you like them by holding their hand.. I drew a picture for Tate and a picture for Lola.

Ned – friends play together

Charlie B – Braxton and Ned are my friends, we play.

Benjamin – You do things with your friends

Mrs P – The people in your family are special too – how do they know they are important to you?

ELC Easter Egg Raffle

The Friends of PAC are holding an Easter Egg Raffle for the ELC.

They are looking for your kind donations of easter eggs - all shapes and sizes.

* NO NUT PRODUCTS PLEASE - PAC IS A NUT AWARE SCHOOL*

There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize Baskets (tickets sold at the ELC Front Desk)

Any excess eggs will be packed in gift boxes for donations to Uniting Wesley Mission.

Please bring your eggs to the ELC Front Desk (Ms Garland promises not to eat them!!) and pop them into the Collection Box provided before Friday 27 March.

Remember to purchase your raffle tickets no later than Friday 27 March - only $1 per ticket.

On Friday 20 March we are celebrating Harmony Day. Please could we ask that children wear something 'ORANGE' to the ELC on this day as part of our festivities.
This can be anything from hair ties, socks, t-shirts, shoes to crazy hair dye!! The choice is all yours.

Dear Families and Friends,

Our class room has exploded with so many acts of kindness and co-operation. There have been so many ways that the boys have helped each other, when a friend is feelings sad, if a friend is needing help, when a friend hurts themselves… It is wonderful to see such spontaneous sharing and caring!

We have been following up the provocation of Clipsal maps that the children brought in for show and tell last week… Many of the boys have worked with a partner to create their own map of the Clipsal track. Amazing co-operative work has gone on!

To follow up our sound of the week, today we ttt taste tested toast, with tuna, tzatziki or tomato… great to see so many children trying different tastes! We created a tally of who liked what tastes and have made up a chart. The most children liked toast with butter or tuna which is great to see!

The children have loved catching up with our buddies again, reflecting on their dragon puppet making… this was a wonderful way for the children to reflect back on our experience and think about how it all went.

Cooper

Hello Cooper friends and families

On Monday we discovered that our butterflies had nibbled their way out of their cocoons! We were very excited to see that they were in fact the Small Citrus Butterfly. As a class we decided that it would be best to let the butterflies go in the yard. For the remainder of the week the class were busy discussing what they thought the butterflies were doing now and whether we were going to lay eggs on the citrus tree again, letting us observe their lifecycle again.

Ollie: I see the butterflies but where are the caterpillars hiding?
Stefan: They turned into butterflies, the caterpillars.
Anay: All the butterflies have popped out. Now the butterflies can flutter (flaps arms) and hang upside down like a bats.

Jenson: Maybe they are little butterflies and they have gone off to lay some little tiny eggs.
Ben: The little butterflies have gone out to lay some butterfly eggs.
Johnny: Butterflies are really good. I love butterflies.

Wilkins

Dear Wilkins families,

This week we have been busy practicing our singing for our grandparents who will be visiting our ELC. Also, we are looking for a few helpers for Grandies Day on the 25^th of March. If you are interested please let us know.  Your help would be much appreciated.

We have been discussing a lot about what makes us happy. Here are a few of the children’s responses:

Just a last minute reminder about our Wilkins class picnic. It will be held at Tusmore Park on Saturday 7^th March between 9:30 – 11:30am. A big thank you to our parent representative, Claire for her organisation of this event.

Musical Addition to our ELC Family

The ELC is very lucky to have received a pianola on permanent loan from the family of old scholar Harry Milton Southwood. Music is a wonderful way to explore our senses and express ourselves and many children have taken the opportunity to have an enthusiastic plonk on the ivories since the pianolas arrival. The stool has also now arrived which means there is a lovely place to sit if you would like to sit and play a tune.

Please take the opportunity to tinkle something tuneful if you have a spare moment. The children understand that when the pianola lid is up they are allowed to play, please don’t close the lid if it is up. The lid will be down during 1.00 and 2.00pm everyday so that Cooper room students can sleep in peace!

If your child has a grandparent that plays please let them know as they may like to share a song with us on Grandies day. Thankyou to Harry’s daughter Janice for the kind gift, we hope Harry would be thrilled to know that his pianola is loved by a new generation.

Chapple and Angwin..extra, extra!!

The Chapple and Angwin rooms are trialling a new way of documenting our program. We are driven by the children’s interests and we feel our current system may not necessarily record where we end up and give full voice to the child. The tree in the workshop is our attempt at a more “organic” program and hopefully a better representation of what the children have experienced. Additionally, it also allows us to more easily work as a year level.

We will see how it “grows” and welcome your feedback.

We have continued this week with looking at change. Following the children’s interest last week with investigated what happens when we add certain solids to liquids. We have been working hard to describe what we see and try and explain what has happened. Loukas used to the word 'gas' to describe what was made during our yeast and balloon experiment, which was very impressive.

Definitely our favourite experiment was when we looked at Mr Charlwood’s unhealthy breakfast. We all decided coke and mentos weren’t the best things to eat in the morning, but we really enjoyed what happened when we put them together. Lachlan’s “Kaboom” and Sage’s “ fountain” summed it up.

Mattingley

Dear Mattingley families and friends,

On Tuesday afternoon we were lucky enough to have Liam's Mum, Tatiana come into our classroom to help us with a special project. Together we made 'Sprout Heads'.  Tatiana asked us what we would need for the seeds to grow. She then showed us the tiny little Alfalfa seeds that we would be using to make our sprout heads. Using our pincher fingers we put some seeds into the end of a stocking and then added some potting soil. After tying a knot at the end of the stocking, Tatiana showed us how to dunk the stockings into water to help the seeds grow. We promised that we would water them every day.

My garden is growing. The seeds will grow and grow- Harry H

Since Tuesday we have been observing our Sprout Heads very carefully to see if we can see any changes. On Wednesday there was no change but we watered them carefully to make sure they had enough water to grow. Thursday morning there were tiny tiny little shoots coming out of the top of some of our sprout heads. On Friday they were a little bigger. I wonder how much they will grow over the long weekend? Make sure you come in and have a look next week to see.

Angwin

What a wonderful week we have had in Angwin this week. We have particularly enjoyed our new outdoor kitchen under the tree in the outdoor sandpit.

“This is a restaurant for at night time, it’s a sea food restaurant” said Allegra

“You eat crabs and fishes and squids!” said Sujay

“It’s $100 dollars” added Scarlett

“I will write the menu, its mashed potato” said Anthony

“You can have our soup, our crabs, our chicken” said Sujay

“And we only close at 1.00 in the morning” explained Allegra

“And we’ll have chocolate soup for dessert!” said Scarlett

We have also developed an interest in each other’s appearance and what that might mean. Some children proposed that children who had the same hair colour and eye colour might come from the same family. Others thought perhaps you looked the way you did because of where you were born.

“I was born in Malaysia” said Harvey. We will investigate to see if everyone from Malaysia looks a bit like Harvey to test our theory. We have begun to photograph our eyes, hair and hands to allow us to further compare. As we have observed so many differences this week, next week we will be thinking about similarities. Can you think of how our eyes might all be the same?

We finally finished our fire engine this week and it’s very lucky that we did as a bush fire has taken over in our block corner! Come in and see our brave fire fighters at work.

Langley

Dear Langley families

 

This week the Langley children had fun outside in our new outdoor jungle area with the new BIG animals. The children found it exciting looking at their photos displayed in the jungle area.

We also set up a new lounge corner under the veranda by the Wilkins room. We shared stories and sang songs on the couch.

The children loved looking at the 'Langley Faces' book. We had discussions at our morning meeting  about who we could see in the photos and particular facial features we could see.  The children also drew self portraits which are displayed in the Langley room.

Building is always lots of fun and outside the children created tall towers and castles out of big wooden blocks.

We have started a family photo wall in the room and are asking all parents to please bring in a family photo for us to display along with the others.

As it was nice weather the children spent alot of their time outside. We blew huge bubbles and had fun chasing them as they blew up into the sky.

Loa Shi came in for Chinese on Tuesday and the children participated in some chinese stories, games and sang some songs with Lao Shi. It's nice to see the children so involved and learning.
