Dear Mead Room families,

We have been enjoying many rich conversations relating to this terms unit of inquiry. We discovered that homes have many purposes –

Bernie – A home can keep us safe.

Scarlett – its for sleeping

Harrison R – for playing

We found that homes are made of different materials –

Sterling – my home is made of metal, bricks, plastic and wood

We noticed that Sterling’s home has a number on the front –

Lachlan – That’s so we know what house we’re going to
Loukas – The letters go in there
 
The children are experimenting with different materials to construct homes and this week we have had some amazing experiences with box construction and blocks.  We are also discussing animal homes, and whilst they are made of different materials (and perhaps don’t have a number on the front) their uses are very similar to ours!

Cooper

Dear Parents and Friends of the Cooper Room,

 

With a week filled with such glorious weather we have had some wonderful playtimes outside. The cooper room have been on the search for Ants to fill our Ant pod. The first group died and the second group escaped! The children have been eagerly searching for ants nests and following ants to see if they would lead us back to their nests.

Joe brought in a snail he found in the garden for show and tell and so our snail hunt began! The children searched everywhere but so far we have only found an empty snail shell.

“Maybe the snail found a new shell,” said Alexander

“He has gone on a holiday,” laughed Harry F

“I know you needed a new shell so he left this one.” suggested Toby

“Snails are from the garden,” said Campbell “ We have them in our garden.”

“Snails have hard back. It heavy for snail,” said Ryan

Today we found some slugs under a tree and the children have loved watching them make a “snail trail” across the black card. We would love to keep some snails in the class for a while so the children can closely observe them and investigate if they can leave their shells and how do they make their sparkly trail.  Please keep your eyes out and go snail hunting this weekend!

Our “Home Sweet Home” Inquiry unit took a strange twist this week as spiders took over the Chapple Room. Incy Wincy became Teeny Weeny and Hugey Wugey spider as we made up our own versions. We were really glad no one got caught in Incy Wincy’s massive door web. We had a great fun making webs and adding our own spiders and bugs to them.

 

Next week we are going to watch a play called “Too many elephants in this house!” I wonder where that will lead?

Dear Parents and Friends,

Our transition programme has continued this week with the children feeling more relaxed up in Reception the more time we spend up there. We also attended Chapel this week which they really enjoyed as our Reading buddies were leading the proceedings out the front.

We have had a great week sharing and discussing what are own homes are like. A big thank you to families who have remembered to bring in their photos! Please keep them coming!

We have started to discuss pets we have and made a wonderful graph that is up in our room.

The children have had some fantastic time out in our outside environment this week, enjoying the sunny weather.

Fiji kindergarten appeal

Dear families,

Our Chinese teacher, Kath House, is currently supporting a volunteer building group collecting donations for a kindergarten in an extremely underprivileged community in Fiji. To help out, we will be gathering the following items for donation.

· Skipping ropes

· Duplo blocks

· Wooden puzzles

· Balls, soccer-netball-rugby

· Blackboards, chalk, crayons

· Blackboard wipers

· Lead and color pencils

· Exercise books

· Pencil sharpeners

· Scissors for paper cutting

· Glue sticks

In addition to this, they are also seeking donation of simple hygiene packs (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, comb, shampoo, face towel). If you would like to donate one of these packs, please enclose  items in clear plastic snap-lock bags.

If you have any unwanted shoes, second hand footy boots or sports shoes, these will also be well received.

 

The building group is going to Fiji in June, so donations will need to be in by Friday 7th June. There will be a box placed at the entrance to the ELC for donations so please give generously to this wonderful cause.

Dear families,

As per our Sunsmart Policy, we are no longer required to wear hats. Hats will be sent home to wash and store but can everyone please check that they only have their child's hat at home and return any other children's or ELC spare hats.

Dear Mothers,

We have finalised the numbers for the Princesses Tea Party -  and we can confirm that it will be held in the Piper Pavilion at 8:30am - 9:30am.

There is an expectation that the Langley and Wilkins mums help walk their children back to the ELC before they say their goodbyes for the day.

Dear Langley families and friends,

What a start to Term 2! This week we said goodbye to Miss Stacey, who is now teaching in the Prep School, and welcomed Miss Sarah from the Mead Room. We have also welcomed some new friends, Theodore and Andrew to the class, so we have all been getting to know each other this week. For our new Unit of Inquiry this term, Home Sweet Home, we will be exploring different animal environments. Children began to discuss different animals they knew and where they live, such as the jungle, farm and sea environments.

Children also became lots of different animal characters with the puppet theatre, and increased their hand-eye coordination by digging for letters in the sand try. After hearing the very heavy rain outside, children loved watching the rain from the window, and since we were stuck inside, we decided to have an impromptu glow stick disco Friday morning.

Reminders

Hi Everyone,

Please remember to take you children's drink bottles home at the end of the day to regularly wash and refill them.

As the colder weather approaches please make sure your child has warm clothes and appropriate shoes (gum boots can be brought also if the children wish to use them for puddle exploration). Hats are not required to be worn in terms 2 & 3.

If you need a school jumper please see the uniform shop and purchase on from them.

Chapple Room

Dear Chapple Families and Friends,

 

We have huffed and puffed our way into Term 2 as we have started on our new inquiry topic “Home Sweet Home”. The children have loved the Three Little Pigs start to the theme and thinking about what makes a home. Our budding actors have had great fun with their story telling. We have also been on lookout for words starting with P.  

 
There is a change of day for some of the Specialist activities, a red note has been placed in the lockers.

We will welcome any boxes to continue our construction. Additionally if anyone has any construction experience or has some knowledge of animal homes it would be great for you to come in to talk to the children- even if you can lay a few bricks the children would love to see it.

Wilkins Room

Dear families,

Welcome back for Term 2! We have been very busy exploring our new unit of inquiry, Home Sweet Home this week. We are looking at animal environments and what makes a home. We have been sharing fiction and nonfiction texts about animal homes, exploring the underwater environment in the sand trough, role playing with jungle animals and talking about all the different types of animals we know and here they might live.

We have also been exploring patterning at the light table and through our creation of painted butterflies. We have been developing our cutting skills using scissors with play dough and cooking up a storm in the home corner. The children have also been preparing for our Princesses Tea Party celebrations next Thursday and are looking forward to sharing this special morning.

Cooper Room

Dear Parents and Friends of the Cooper Room,

It has been lovely catching up with our old friends this week after the holidays. The children have enjoyed sharing their holidays news and adventures over Easter.

“I go to the big beach. Mine got fish there,” said Harry

“I got fwee (three) eggs. That’s one, two ,fwee! I eat them,” said Archie

“We got to go to the beach. I played with Lily.” said Tommy

This term our unit of Inquiry is “Home Sweet Home”. We will explore our environment and look at how animals use it for their homes. We will also do some research on our homes. The children are bringing home their research sheets tonight which we hope will be completed together with families. We will be looking at the photos of our homes and discussing why we need hones, what we use them for and comparing them to the way animals use their homes.

 

This week certainly was a change of season and we loved the opportunity to rug up and play outside in the fresh air – especially in the puddles! With the rain around for the next few days at least please make sure the children have a warm change of clothes in their bags and pop their gumboots in for the fun rainy day play!

Mead Room

Dear Mead Room families,

This week it has been all about reflection.  We have been thinking about Miss Sarah and how we miss her, but so happy for her at the same time – the Langley Room is so lucky to have Miss Sarah!  We have been thinking about Anzac Day and reminding ourselves that it was a day for remembering how lucky we are to live in a country like Australia, and we remember the brave men and women who have served and defended our country.   And we have been thinking about our families,  in particular our Mummy!  Next Thursday is the Princesses Tea Party and the children have been reflecting on all of the things our Mummy does with us and for us……… it's a long list!!

And we welcome new friends, reinforce current friendships and strengthen the Mead Room community!

Information from the Langley Room

 

 

Dear Parents/Guardians,

 

I write to inform you that the Stacey Wybrew has taken up an opportunity to teach in the Prep School from the beginning of this term. Her replacement in Langley will be Miss Sarah Marotti from the Mead Room. Sarah has been working in the ELC for a couple of years now and is looking forward to working with students, parents and staff in the 2 year old program. Emily Downie and Kerry Rowbotham will continue their role as co-educators in Langley. Stacey will be available at different times to help with the transition this week.

I would like to thank her for her contribution to ELC life this term and congratulate Sarah on her new role.

We are currently seeking interests from our casual staff to replace Sarah in Mead to continue to work with Melissa Prest and an announcement will be made shortly.
