Parent tips for tricky moments

Pick your battles - only focus on the important stuff

·        For trivial/annoying behaviours (90%) withdraw all parent attention by calmly/quickly walking away with NO discussion/negotiation or argument

·        For big battles (10%) offer a choice (i.e.: stop that behaviour now or miss out on a privilege/go to room etc.)

·        Always follow through with consequences

·        Parents must work together on a united front

·        Take the emotionality out of your behaviour management

·        Reward (time/activity rather than a toy) behaviour you want to encourage

·        Don’t try to reason with an upset child – they are not emotionally available

·        Model the behaviour you would like to see in your child

·        Often distraction is a good means of avoiding a child meltdown
