Wash Wash Scrub Scrub!!

Hey Dads!!!
Don't forget to go shopping for your hygiene product to bring as a donation for the Big Boys Breakfast. Soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, flannels, shampoo and conditioner etc... are all in short supply up there and would be very gratefully received. Your children have been observing the photos of children from the community of Freegon in the lands and your donation will help your child make a tangible community service link. So duck out this weekend with your big boy (or girl!) and take a spin down the soap isle of your supermarket. We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday morning.
Happy Shopping

Book Week

We had a wonderful time in our costumes sharing our favourite stories today. Thanks to all the mums and dads who helped us create them and joined us in the gym this morning for the parade. It was wonderful to see lots of our older brothers on stage too. We finished off our great day with a play by the Langley teachers called "Where is the Green Sheep?" What fun!!!

New Wooden Benches

Thankyou to Martin Charlwood and his helpers from 4C in the Prep School who put together our new Bench seats. These were donated by the parents from the previous Edgerley class. They are now in both the Langley yard and the main outdoor area.

Chapple Room Health Checks

Dear Chapple parents,
Carol, our local CAFS nurse, will be visiting the ELC on the 14th September and 26th October to perform pre-school health screenings. If you would like to take advantage of this please visit Mrs Porter and choose a convenient time for you from the schedule. You will be required to bring your child’s blue book to the visit and complete the form that has been placed in your child’s pigeon hole. If you have recently visited your CAFS nurse or have an upcoming appointment you do not need to also schedule one at Kindergarten, these are being offered purely for your convenience.

The children have been experimenting with different textures through finger painting this week. They have been describing their creations as they poke and squiggle and squish the paint with their fingers and their whole hands;
“I did a bee” explained Kristian
“I do line” described Pauline
“Blue, squishy, wet” said Gwen
“Cold, it yucky” said Harry with a smile
“I drawed a big dinosaur, it’s got its bones” Sebastian told us
“It says my name” said Raphael
We look forward to experiencing some different textures in our play next week.
Kind regards,
Jess, Kerry, Hayley and Pippa

Mead
Dear Mead Parents,
There was an unusual surprise waiting for the children on Thursday morning in the Mead Room. Following the discussions and interest in the room, the children had the opportunity to look at and explore a real heart (cows). The children looked amazed at what they saw! It was a very large one. They knew that a human heart was about the size of your fist. But this one was quite enormous!
"Wow" Ella exclaimed!
"There's the little tubes that the blood goes though" Henry said pointing.
Zach was interested in having a touch of the heart. "It feels like meat. I can see some blood" he said.
"But blood is inside your body" Sebastian commented, "You can't see it."
"I can see the openers" Jack J said pointing to some arteries and veins. "It looks like a cabbage" he continued.
"It pumps, and pumps and pumps" Jesse described.
"Look at the dark hole" Henry said, pointing to a hole disappearing into the hearts centre.
"It's just so the blood can pump in there and out of the hole. I can put my two fingers in there. It's very bendy for mine fingers to fit in" Sebastian added.
"Yeah. It pumps through the hole, down the tubes and into the meat" Henry continued. "And that's the tube and it joins to that. Those are big tubes and that's the hole the blood goes through. And that (he said pointing) used to join to something" he described.
Best wishes,

Cooper
In the beautiful warm weather this week we were all keen to get outside. On Wednesday the Cooper and Mead children dug a river in the sandpit and we trickled water down it. Later in the day the four year olds made the river deeper and wider. On Thursday we returned to our now enormous river and trickled and tipped water down it again...
“It’s getting a dirty river” said William as the water mixed with the sand.
“I put it down” said Rocco who was holding the hose and watching the water trickle out.
“Can I go over the bridge?” asked Toby.
“It will go wee, wee down there" said Angus who was digging out the river with Sebastian M.
“It’s going under” exclaimed Chanel, seeing that the water was trickling under the bridge.
“Oh, oh” called out Mahmoud.
“Aah, I’m scared of it” cried Sebastian R. taking a flying leap across the river!
All the children loved getting sandy and wet in the sunshine, crossing the bridge, digging with the long spades and sailing boats down the river.

This week we saw a brilliant play at the big boys school which covered various stories and many funny characters. The children really enjoyed the experience, especially when they had a chance to dance around with the actors from the show!

We have been busy cooking in our restaurant and on Thursday the children decided to cook up Wombat Stew. We went on a walk up to the big oval and collected ingredients for our wombat stew...sticks, dirt, leaves, feathers and more. Back at the kindy we made a big brown wombat, added water and boiled up the stew.
"mmm it smells really good and tasty" said Nicholas P
"We need some spices to make it yummy" suggested Tom
"Yes, we need feathers, here mix it up, mix it up" added Sam "Are you going to taste it now?" asked Nicholas P
"Yeah, we might have to trick someone to taste it like the book" said Ashraf "Wombat stew, wombat stew, ooey gooey crunchy munchy" sang Sam "I think we should eat this for Big Boys Breakfast" exclaimed Tom "What a good idea, I think all the Dads will love it!" said Mrs McGee
So watch out - we might be serving up Wombat Stew for breakfast next Wednesday!
Thank you to everyone who helped their child dress up for the Book Week parade, it was a lot of fun guessing who everyone's characters were!
Warm wishes - Suria, Sinead and Sue

Edgerley
Dear Edgerley Parents,
We have had a very busy and social week. There have been lots of excavators in the sandpit continuing on with Cooper Rooms river project. The boys worked hard to listen to the ideas and contributions of others and work towards a shared goal. The result was amazing, the river flowed so swiftly we had to find a flotilla of boats!
This social play was mirrored in the block corner with the creation of volcano island and jungle houses for dinosaurs. The children worked beside each other, making space for each other’s houses and discussing the attribute and roles their dinosaurs would take.
“My dinosaur is alone so he doesn’t need a road to his house because he is alone” said Christopher
“I got this house so I need a skinny dinosaur to fit in it.” Said Soren
“My dinosaur is a allosaurus and it’s red so it can go in the volcano without getting hot” said Elliot
We also continued to work on our exercising place and invited Chapple children to join us. We look forward to recording more exercises next week
Have a great weekend

We have been examining our faces this week as we create our self-portraits and our special portraits for our dads! We have been talking about the features on our faces that we might need to add to our drawings. We have also created paintings of our faces at the easel using other artist’s portraiture as inspiration.
“There’s no body” observed Raphael as he examined the oval shape on his piece of paper,
“Eyes, nose…..I need my lips” he said as he added features to his painting.
“Blue paint, eyes and a mouth” James S said as he painted his face,
“Some eyes…..nose” commentated Stella.
As Leonardo painted his portrait, he told us what was on it,
“Hair, look Miss Kerry…nose….bumps” he said as he painted some rosy cheeks on his portrait.

Don’t forget next Friday is our storybook dress up day for book week! There is a parade in the Piper Pavilion up at the school at 9am so we would appreciate it if children who are attending on Friday could be here by 8.45am.

Mead
The Thursday Mead children were very excited to watch the 'Jump Rope for Heart' skipping display this week. Before the display we discussed exercise and its effect on your heart.
"Exercise helps your heart" - Jack O
"Do blood fix your body?" - Jesse
"Yes, if we didn't have blood we die" - Jack O
"When we exercised my heart went quicker" - Jack O
"Your heart helps you get bigger" - Sebastian
"You have to exercise to get fit and healthy" - Tommi
"I swim under the water" - Grace
"You can pump your body" - Ella
"You shouldn't eat too much chips. They are really salty" - Henry
"You need to eat bread, milk" - Eric
"And mandarin too" - Jack J
The children are developing a wonderful understanding of healthy living!
Best wishes,
Emma, Emma and Susan

Cooper
Some of the Cooper children can pull very funny faces! They looked in the mirror at their funny faces and showed their friends, then using paper plates, collage materials and glue they were able to create their funny faces. The children selected the parts of their faces, such as eyes, nose and hair and experimented with turning mouth shapes up and down to make them happy and sad...
“It’s sad ‘cause it want mummy. There’s my nose” explained Rocco.
“This face is smiley ‘cause he got his mum” said Alyssa.
Other children found ways to change their faces by adding feathers or strips of paper for limbs.
“See I made something different – it looks like a bird” said Alec.
"Ooh, my person's got arms" said Cooper.
“I have eyes. I have cheeks here – next to my nose. Sometimes Daddy calls me his daughter I say I’m not your daughter - I’m just Lily” Lily told us.
We have had lots of fun recording the children's funny faces in photos and making each other laugh!

This week we have been discussing recipes....and if your child has come home with soggy shoes and muddy clothes this is why......

"We need sand and water to make our chocolate mousse" said Blake "RYAN, we need more mud" shouted Nathaniel "I've got some rocks too" added Ryan "Yep, stir and mix it all up" explained Oliver "Here, I found a big bit" said Daniel Black as he came up with a big lump of mud "Oh thank you" replied Nathaniel "How do you make chocolate?" asked the teacher "Well plain water, milk and oil, that's how you make it" explained Nicholas P "I don't know, maybe some sugar" added Ryan "You made it with yoghurt" said Blake "You wanna try some....it's sooooo yummy" exclaimed Nathaniel excitedly.
The children have enjoyed making up some of their own recipes during role-play scenarios so I think we may have a master chef kitchen in our classroom next week!
Don't forget next week we have the Book Week Parade on Friday at 9:15AM - so come dressed as your favourite book character!
Warm wishes - Suria, Sinead and Sue

We were busy exploring our bodies this week. After recording our ideas about what is on the outside of the body we began to think about what is on the inside. We shared a favourite story about poo called “The Little Mole Who Knew it was None of His Business”. How poo is made became of topic of interest and discussion.
You eat the fruit and it might change into yucky, it’s not the same as when you eated it – Lucy
I wonder if it’s the grease that comes and makes it yucky? – Jasmine
No, I think that sometimes… if you eat fruit and you eat meat and then the colours mix and then you eat chocolate and the colours mix to yucky– Alex

We experimented with paints and discovered Alex was right, if you mix the colours of the foods together, they made a poo colour. "I told ya!" said Alex

A small group of children created an “exercise place” this week and we have begun to think of exercises to share. We have been videoing them, look out for our exercise video soon!!!

Book Week Parade

Dear Parents,
children who attend on Fridays are invited to be part of the ELC and Junior Primary Book Week Parade in two weeks time on Friday the 26th of August. Your child is encouraged to come dressed as a favourite book character for the day so now is the time to begin thinking about a costume. Please do not send your child to kindergarten dressed as a super hero. Your child may like to bring the book to school on the day as well to share it with their classmates. Please help us by ensuring the book is named. Feel free to send a comfy change of clothes in case your child tires of their costume during the day (particularly if the costume is heavy or bulky)
Happy sewing!!

In response to our investigation into our brilliant brains and bodies, the children have been interested in their facial features. We have been examining a range of different facial features using laminated pictures. Some of our faces look funny when we hold up different parts, especially the bearded mouth! Max looked at Miss Kerry with the beard on her face,
“Man” he said as he pointed to the beard!
We have also been talking about what our face looks like when we are feeling different emotions; sad, happy, angry and excited. We have been looking at photographs of emotion on people’s faces and trying to imitate them. Next week we will continue our investigation by talking about how the different emotions make our body feel.
Please make sure you check your child’s pigeon hole next week for our Big Boys Breakfast invitation and survey, we’re very busy practicing our songs in preparation.

Kind regards,
Jess, Hayley, Kerry and Pippa

Mead
Dear Parents,
Our Brilliant Brains and Bodies have been working hard this week in the Mead Room! We have been drawing portraits of ourselves and comparing them to our photographs. The children have noticed how different they are now - now that they are bigger! We have noticed that we all have hair, noses, eyes and ears but who knew we had eyebrows, chins and necks too! This has also lead to lots of play in the hospital fixing, administering medicine and "getting rid of the sick things." Through our skeleton jigsaw the children have been introducing many new words and names to one another.

"Bone is part of your head - it is called the giant head!" said Jack
"Your head is at the top of your body." said Marios
"Brains you have brains in your head." yelled Dillon
"I've got the back part - the bumpy bit." said Oliver
"That's the spine. You need to be careful of your spine cos', just cos." said Henry
"Look I’ve got the bin bit. You know where the food goes in here. It's like the bin." said Oliver
"These long bits they must be for your legs cos your arms aren't that long." Hannah
"Those are the parts that take all the bad bits of the food away. They go up here then through the carpet (I guess) then here to your bottom. Then out as poo, poo." stated Tommi

Our skeleton has taken many shapes and forms this week as the children discussed just how the body fits together. Some children even made their amazing bodies copy the skeleton!
Stay tuned to see what we discover next!
Kind regards
Emma, Susan and Emma

Cooper
The Cooper children have been thinking and talking about skeletons. Emerson showed us some x-rays of his dad and Bean brought in a picture of a skeleton. The children looked at this picture and talked about what they saw and knew…
“Monster, aaah” exclaimed Bean.
“Skeleton” said Felix.
“We can see fingers” said Olivia.
“Toes” said Felix.
“There’s blood inside and there’s bones” explained Alec.
“Where is your skeleton?” asked Mrs Blake.
“In your tummy from blood” answered Bailey.
“I have dinosaur skeleton” Alex told us.
Alec pointed to his chest to show us where his skeleton was.
We also examined x-rays on the light box…
“Keton (skeleton) – my daddy hand” said Rocco.
“That’s a body” said Chanel, “The bones make you go round.”
“There’s like a head and part of your tummy bones, that’s it” explained Sebastian R.
We read the story Funnybones and looked at the people and animal skeleton shapes too. Next week keep an eye out for a special bony visitor to our room called George!
Kind regards,
Ali and Rosalie

Chapple
This week the children have made an ambulance in our hospital. They used boxes, paper plates, paint and patty pans to create their super-fast ambulance....
“Ambulances are for sick people” said Blake “I made some medicine to help us get healthy again” added Oliver “Ambulances take people to hospital” said Daniel B “We need one if we get hurt outside” added Blake “Does anyone know the special number to call an ambulance?” asked Mrs McGee “000” said Max A “There are three parts you can get for the same number” explained Jesse “Yeah – the fire engine, the ambulance and the police” said Ryan “When do you think we need to call an ambulance?” asked Mrs McGee “When there’s an emergency” said Jesse “Great thinking – can anyone explain to us what an emergency is?” asked Mrs McGee “Like a bad accident” explained Blake “Wow, we all know so much about ambulances, fantastic thinking!” added Mrs McGee
So we are all in safe hands! A big thank you to Blake's mum Kirsty for bringing us the special doctors aprons, hats and shoe covers for the children to play with, they have loved dressing up and feeling like real doctors!

We had a wonderful time at the fantastic Mr McGee performance, thank you so much to all the parents who came along, we hope you enjoyed it as much as the children! Next week we are looking forward to a Jump Rope for Heart skipping demonstration to get our bodies bouncing with exercise!

Warm wishes - Suria, Sinead and Sue
Edgerley
We were very busy this week, creating bodies and recording our knowledge about what is on the outside of them. We know a lot! Come into our classroom and see our diagram that we created together. We talked about what keeps a body together and then created a diagram about bones and skin. Next week we look forward to sharing our knowledge about what is on the inside of our bodies.
In the garden we got busy planting our vegetables to harvest in spring. We planted lettuce, broccoli, snow peas and beetroot (Yum Yum!!) They have had lots of water from the rain and we hope they survive!
We enjoyed exploring shaving foam and thinking about how our hands feel.
“I’m feeling it” said Christopher
“It’s got cream inside of it” said Zac
“Was it super sticky?” asked Ajeet
“No, gooey” explained Lucy
“Mucky” added Harry
Next week we will explore a different texture and see if we can explain how our hands can feel the difference.
Have a great weekend

Miss Gray’s Carrot and Yoghurt Muffins

Dear Parents,
you may have noticed that Mr Wagenfeller was away unwell this week and Miss Gray ably stepped into the breach, preparing yummy lunches for us. On Wednesday she cooked us special muffins for afternoon tea and what a hit they were!!! You might like to try the recipe at home.

2 cups of self-raising flour
½ cup of sugar
½ cup of oil
1 cup of fruit yoghurt (we had strawberry yogurt in ours, yum yum!!)
1 egg
1 medium carrot, peeled and grated

Preheat oven to 180 oc. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl until the mixture just starts to come together. The batter should look slightly lumpy (Don’t over beat!) Spoon into a greased muffin tray, filling to about 2/3 full. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes.

Thankyou Miss Gray for our yummy lunches, and welcome back Mr Wagenfeller.

Sand Pit Kitchen

Dear Parents,
If you have any old pots or pans or kitchen utensils that you no longer use and would be happy to donate they would be gratefully received at the ELC. Our intensive Master Chef Sessions have taken a toll on our current collection and we are looking for some more pieces.
Regards

Langley
The Langley children have continued their inquiry into our unit, Brilliant Brains and Bodies through their exploration of the medical kit. The children have been engaged in role play with sick babies, children and teachers!
Kristian was very concerned about Miss Kerry,
“Ear it sore” he said,
“I check this one checka, checka, checka” he added as he peered into Miss Kerry’s ear with his otoscope,
“all better” he said as he finished checking Miss Kerry.
Archie and William came over to see if Miss Kerry was alright also,
“That’s an arm pressure” Archie explained as he held the toy syringe up to Miss Kerry’s arm. He then carefully held the stethoscope up to Miss Kerry’s chest,
“I can hear your bones” he said. William wanted to confirm the diagnosis and held the stethoscope on Miss Kerry also,
“What can you hear?” asked Miss Kerry,
“I hear baby Jessica” he said excitedly.
We have also begun to explore our facial features and have started to discuss our use of senses. Raphael was explaining to the other children how you hear, “it (the noise) goes into your ears, into your tummy and your legs and into your shoes”!!
Kind regards,
Jess, Kerry, Hayley and Pippa

Mead
What a busy body week the Mead children have had! The children have been fascinated with what their bodies can do. They have rolled, stood on one foot, we have sung 'Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes' and done the 'Hokey Pokey'! Some children even discovered they could make letters with their bodies. However perhaps of greatest interest this week was when Hannah showed her 'blue bits' in her wrist for 'Show and Tell'. This generated much discussion and research into what the blue bits in your wrist are?

"The blue bits they are actually..........." Hannah began, unsure.
"Your blue bits are bigger than mine" said Charlie to the teacher, observing her wrist.
"The blue bits go up and down" Gabe observed, looking at his own wrist.

We discovered that our 'blue bits' are linked to our heart through much research together! We learnt that the heart is a muscle and is like a bike pump. But it doesn't pump air through us, like a bike pump - it pumps BLOOD!

"I have a heart" said Gabe.
"If we didn't we would die" said Jack O.
"If you hurt your knee you get blood" Erin contributed.
"A heart pumps blood" Gabe confirmed to everyone.
"But how does your blood stay in?" asked Oliver.
"Your skin" Jack O told Oliver.
"If you have blood you will be hurting and get a bandaid" Gabe said.
"Yes, the heart makes your blood" Erin added.
"It pumps blood in your body" Jack O seconded.
"And the blue bits are veins" Hannah concluded.

Best wishes,
Emma M, Susan and Emma G

Cooper
In Cooper this week we began an exploration of what hands can do, which was partly inspired by the children’s fascination with scissors and cutting. We read non-fiction books about hands and talked about the different things we could do with our hands. Using brightly coloured paints, the children made hand prints and enjoyed the sensation of brushing paint on to their and their friends’ hands. The cutting also continued with the children cutting a variety of materials, persevering and practising their skills. Some of the children described how their hands made the scissors work…
“You go like this and then we just cut” explained Olivia.
“Like this” said Priyanka snipping her fingers together to show us.
“Like that you put two fingers in it” Alyssa demonstrated how to hold the scissors.
The intense looks of concentration on the children’s faces were delightful as they practised and developed their scissor skills.
Kind regards,
Ali and Rosalie

Chapple
We have discovered the bones in our bodies this week! The children (and the teachers) have learnt some of the Latin names for our bones, we have been putting a skeleton together in our classroom, singing 'Dem Bones' and have you met George the skeleton? Please introduce yourself next time you come in, he is very friendly and loves a chat!
The children have also been interested in exercise and the effects it has on our bodies. We made great use of the beautiful weather earlier during the week and have been exercising during our outside time. Here are some of the children's thoughts on the topic...
Exercise makes you really strong – Sam
Swinging, climbing and running – Daniel H

Jumping in the mud – Nathaniel

We get energy from food and drinks – Jesse

I was sweaty – Zachary

We do fast breaths – Daniel
Enjoy the weekend, - maybe you can exercise together out in the sunshine or discover some bones at the museum!
Warm wishes,
Suria, Sinead and Sue

Edgerley
We continued to explore our skeleton this week, even making our own 3D puzzle. We welcomed Mrs Tiller into our room and were thrilled to discover that she was the perfect addition to Edgerley.
After discussing what is on, both the inside and the outside of our bodies, with Mrs Cooper we began to explore the attributes of our faces using collage materials, we discovered all sorts of places on our faces that we hadn’t thought about before, forehead, cheeks, earlobes, pupils and even teeth. Come into our classroom and see our faces on the wall,
We began to explore the different ways our eyes can see, using different things to change our vision. We had great fun with magnifying glasses and even recorded what we could see with a camera, Ajeet enjoyed taking lots of pictures!
”These are called eye spies” said Erin, describing the magnifying glasses
We will explore cellophane next week and see if we can record the difference in what we see.
See you next week
Mel, Susan, Pip and Rachel
