Changing States

Dear Parents,
With the arrival of a new term comes a new PYP unit of inquiry. After all the bashing and crashing of Noiseworks we will now jump into the world of scientific observation as we explore our new unit, Changing States.
Under the overarching theme of How the World works we will investigate changes that occur in nature, chemical reactions, how we can affect change, prediction and hypothesis, observing and describing changes that have occurred. This is all a very fancy way of saying that we intend to heat, cool, crush, bash, dissolve, mix, stir, and blow up anything we can get our hands on and see what happens!!! What fun!!
Our investigations began last term as we observed what happened when we put our mum’s bath bombs in water! We hope you all enjoy this Kindy made chemical reaction too.
Cooper students have already begun to explore the changes that occurred as they stirred sugar into water this week, “”There’s sugar but the sugar’s gone away” described Harry as he stirred and watched the sugar dissolve.
Langley students observed the relationship between wax and water as they illustrated with white crayons and then painted over the top with ink. “I can’t see it! Oh no my drawing” said Stella disappointed that she couldn’t see her drawing. “It’s a surprise’ said Olivia reassuringly to her.
Edgerley students immediately observed change in their own environment as they walked to the gym “Because it’s autumn all the leaves fall out” said Roshan as we observed the leaves changing colour on the trees. “The leaves fall down at autumn and then it’s winter and then it’s spring and then it’s back to summer and it just happens again and again” said Henry sharing his knowledge of seasonal change.
The focus of our unit will be predicting and hypothesising and then observing and describing changes and reactions. If you have any skills to share with us in this area please let Mrs Porter know.
