The Week before Christmas
We have been busy having lots of fun in the ELC, and enjoying each other’s company before we have an enjoyable break over Christmas. This week some of the children delighted in preparing some green jelly for afternoon tea for the whole centre which was well received at the end of the day…yum! They also enjoyed some face painting consisting of angels, a few Christmas trees, snowmen and Rudolph with his nose so bright was a real favourite amongst the children.
We wish Miss Mackay all the best with her new job and she will be sadly missed!
Wishing you all a very happy and safe Christmas!
See you in the new year..
Friday the 13th January is ‘Wheels Day’ ,bring a bike, scooter, pram or anything with wheels.

Visit from Santa
Santa made a very special trip to come visit us at the ELC, even though he was so busy at this time of year! We were all very surprised and happy to see him. It was very exciting for everyone and we all got a yummy Christmas ornament to keep. We have all spent time during the week singing Christmas songs and reading Christmas stories. We were all busy little elves making Christmas decorations and cards. Both the 3’s and 4’s decided to make delicious Christmas cupcakes. We all helped to put the mixture together, put the icing on top and then we got to eat them all up! The children explained how we made the cupcakes:
‘mix it a lot’ said Daniel B
‘use some oil’ said Aidan
‘and 2 eggs’ mentioned Max A
Nathaniel suggested ‘it gets bigger and bigger in the oven’.

Wow what a busy week we have had this week! We have been enjoying creating and building with the big coloured bricks outside this week. We have created all sorts of structures; some have been so tall we’ve had to use the step from the bathroom to be able to reach the top to put more on!
Our big three year old children had their moving up morning in the Mead room on Tuesday and we welcomed some new friends into the Langley room for a visit. On top of this, we have also been very busy creating a special surprise to take home to put under the Christmas tree for Mum and Dad, make sure you check your child’s pigeon hole next week!
We would like to thank Miss Bethany for all her help in our classroom over the last three weeks and look forward to welcoming back Miss Kerry on Monday.
Kind regards,
Jess, Hayley, Pippa and Bethany

Through out the term we have explored school buildings, houses and community facilities. The children have talked about their own homes and what they are made of. When we went on our excursion to Lightsview we were able to see houses and an apartment building in construction. The children have been busy creating a duplo town in the Mead Room full of fire stations, police stations, schools and hospital. In preparation for our class party we constructed an edible town.
"We are really going to need a skyscraper. Careful it doesn't fall down." said Tommi
"Ree..a fire station and fire engines too. A shed for the trucks." added Leon
"What about my house?" asked Jesse. "We can make it too."
Using carefully created edible cement we constructed our buildings, starting with the walls, then the ceiling. The fire station was completed with doors open for the trucks to drive straight in and the skyscraper was four levels high!!

A small group of Cooper children helped to cook playdough this week. They added and measured the ingredients in the bowl and then stirred them...
“We mixed it all together” explained Chanel.
“We put some salt in there” said Angus.
“Some oil…flour” said Toby.
“Hot water” said Sebastian M.
We decided to make our playdough a little Christmassy..
“We used green water” added Toby.
“And glitter! Glitter!” exclaimed Chanel.
The children helped to knead the dough until it was smooth and had cooled down and then had great fun making Christmas trees and other festive shapes with their hands.
Kind regards and merry Christmas,

This week we continued our investigations into castles and further explored the idea of day to day life inside them. We discovered that a castles town square is called the bailey and we also found out that places inside the bailey that used fire (like bakers, kitchens and blacksmiths) had to have stone roofs because hay ones would catch on fire! We still wondered about the role of arches and on the students request took another walk to our main building to check that this wasn’t a castle inside…it was just a building, how disappointing!
We also began a new inquiry this week as Zac shared all he knew about volcanoes in Hawaii and we looked through non-fiction books to see different types of volcanoes. Will we be able to squeeze this one in before the end of term??? We can always try!

Ahoy me hearties! In response to Harry’s spontaneous boat role play in the sandpit last week, we have added props to the sandpit to further extend the children’s play scenarios. We have added a steering wheel, sea creatures and a sail to our boat. The children have also created, imagined and suggested some of their own props;
“Get paddles” commented Jack S retrieving the spades from the sandpit to use as paddles,
“Put sea weed” suggested Eden,
“Lobster” observed Hugo M
“I do a sail” said Jacob as he helped to create the sail for the boat,
“I’m dotting all around” commented Harry as he drew dots on the sail.

Dear Mead Parents,
Following the Nativity, and in preparation for the festive season, the Mead children have been busying themselves in many related activities. They are printing, wrapping, drawing, painting and decorating. The children were joined by their ELC friends from other classes in a joint Christmas Tree decorating venture. Have a look as you enter the ELC foyer at our wonderful tree!
We have had discussions about what Christmas means to us.
"I love circling things in magazines that I would like from santa" -Tommi
"I like buying the Christmas turkey. I cook it!" - Jack O
"I like when I put my Christmas tree up. I already put my lights on my tree" - Milo
"I love the Christmas ham. Mmmmm!" - Sebastian
"If I am good I will get a skateboard and a guitar!" - Gabe
Best wishes and ho, ho, ho!,

Last week we went for a walk around the Prep School and looked at the different sorts of buildings and structures there and on the way. The children were most interested in ways of going up, such as ramps, stairs and a lift that we found near the library. We also looked at shapes and patterns and the different materials that buildings are made of. This week we revisited the photos that we took on our walk and the children remembered and discussed what they had seen, then used black pen and wash paint to make pictures of the places...
“Another tennis court and I saw a gate… AND a roof – a stripy one” said Alyssa.
“The stairs, they’re brick” said Sophie.
“There’s five stairs. Up the stairs I saw some children down there” recalled Bailey.
“This is Charlie’s school. It’s where they have a lift” Finn told us.
Kind regards,

This week in the Chapple Class we have been busy with Christmas craft and counting activities. The children have enjoyed making Santa beards and decorating Christmas trees. On Wednesday we were involved in the school assembly in the Anzac Hall where we showed a short slide show of the children's work from our Build It Up unit as well as a movie about a Building Alphabet that the children made. They did a fantastic job of singing, building and knocking the blocks down at the end to give everyone a big surprise!
We have a busy week ahead of us, please refer to the weekly diary for all the details.

Edgerley
This week in Edgerley Room we explored all things knightly. We spent a lot of time exploring non-fiction books about castles and knights and made some interesting discoveries. We discovered that the Lord or Lady’s family in a castle lived in the keep and that knight’s and soldiers lived on the top floor of the keep to protect the family. We also discovered that people didn’t keep their clothes in cupboards in castles, instead they kept them in chests (just like treasure chests). We were very interested in knights and learned that knights were very good men who served the king, country and God. Girls couldn’t be knights in the olden days but our Edgerley girls were happy to play the role of princesses (pink ones!). We have had lots of fun playing knights this week and there may be some interest in knight play at home. Our Edgerley boys understand that knights were helpful and helped others and don’t run around chopping peoples heads off. We hope that you have good helpful knights at home too!!
To follow up on Oliver’s herb show and tell and the links Alex made between the herbs and lasagne, next week we plan to make fresh pasta with herbs in it. If there are any Mum’s and Dad’s who know how to make fresh pasta from scratch who would like to come in and assist (the very inept and unculinary!) Mrs Bishop we sure could use some help! Please e-mail Mrs Bishop at mbishop@staff.pac.edu.au

Dear Mead Parents,
We experienced a performance of a different kind this morning as the children watched a rendition of "Miss Lily's Fabulous Pink Feather Boa" by Margaret Wild. We watched our very own Mrs B (Music teacher) along with three others perform on string instruments while the story was enthusiastically told by another lady. The children did a great job listening and came back full of feedback on their favourite parts of the performance.
'I loved the viola' - Gabe
'I liked where the last potoroo cutted a bit off the featheres' - Henry
'I loved the violins because they are one of my favourite instruments' - Jack J
'I thought the pink father boa was beautiful' - Ella
'I liked that music' - Owen
'Miss Lily was a friendly crocodile' - Grace

Our Nativity play is fast approaching and this week we visited the big stage at Anzac Hall for the first time. The Cooper children have been eagerly 'playing Nativity' in anticipation. In our room we played with the Nativity figure toys and the children retold the story with all the little characters (although one child was heard to say that he was playing 'Wonky Donkey'!). Other children looked at the Nativity book with their friends...
"I don't know how to read it" said Lily.
"We can just look at the pages" suggested Sophie.
"Baby Jesus is there now" said Lily seeing that he had been born.
"There the angels" said Sophie.
"They're singing a song for baby Jesus" said Lily.
On our outside stage we set up a Nativity scene with a stable and costumes and the children played their parts and sang our songs beautifully. We are very much looking forward to sharing our big production next week with all of our families and friends!
Best wishes,
Ali, Rosalie and Janine

Lately the Chapple boys have been intrigued by famous paintings and artists. We have shared a few story books involving famous artists and the boys really liked the idea in one book of being able to step through the picture frame, into the painting and explore what they could see. The Mona Lisa has stood out as a favourite and the children have begun to paint their own portraits and each other's portraits on the small artist's easel. Below are some of the children's thoughts on the Mona Lisa.
“She’s got long hair” said Sam “She has a smile” observed Max C “How did she get in that picture?” asked Daniel B “It could be magic inside the painting” suggested Nathaniel “Someone just painted her” answered Ryan “Yeah, Leonardo did” said Blake excitedly “What is the special name for someone who paints pictures?” asked the teacher “A painter” said Sam “My mum’s an artist” added Charlie
Please take a look at our class art gallery on the wall above the computers. We look forward to seeing you next week at our Nativity performance! Warm wishes

This week we continued to work on personal projects with friends in between our super busy schedule with performances and rehearsals. We began to look more closely at some famous buildings using the overhead projectors and found a new way to use our big blocks, creating 2D images up against the wall over the images of projected buildings. Late in the week we began to talk about the shapes we could see in castles and discovered that lots had arch and round shapes rather than the squares and rectangles that we find in our own houses. We shared a new story “King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub” and revisited an old favourite “The Things I Love About Me” and looked at castles in those. We will continue to investigate castles next week and also plan to learn more about knights and their princesses (in the boys words, not mine!)

Inspired by building plans, pictures of buildings and photographs of our own houses we have been creating our own structures using boxes and recycled materials. The children have been developing their fine motor skills as they use the sticky tape and glue to join their boxes together and attach small details.
“I make a crocodile, I sticka, sticka” said Kristian,
“It’s my new house with two toilets” commented James S
“Dat’s Daddy” said Luca
“A boat” Susannah told us
“A bird” said Gwen
To continue our building and construction next week, we would love donations of any recycled boxes and containers and are still eager to have more photos of children’s own houses to share with their peers.

Dear Mead Parents,
Wow! What a day the children had on the Lightsview excursion. The bus trip there was the start of the excitement, followed by seeing diggers, buildings in all stages of development, playgrounds and icypoles at the end. Here's some observations by the children.
Look at the big one, they had to use lots of material to cover it - Ella
It's an apartment - Dillon
It's a building site - Joshua
Look, a skyscraper - Tommi
It will go fiveteen high - Zach
Ten high - Charlie
They have got lots of balconies. One up really high (scaffolding) - Ella
He's using wires in the house to do the electricity - Molly
This is ready for a house to build here -Jack O
This is a slab - Charlie
They will build a house on top - Jack O
Best wishes,
Emma M, Susan and Emma G Cooper
On our excursion to Lightsview we saw many different building materials including large pallets of bricks. Over the last couple of weeks the Cooper children have shown a great interest in this building material and its ability to be Big Bad Wolf proof! Back in our classroom we used blocks and paint to stamp brick shapes and create pictures of very strong houses…
“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, it’s this tall” said Toby. “Two storeys, now it’s three storeys” he said as he stamped another row of block prints. “That’s how many I use, ten storeys.”
“I have big one” said Cooper.
“It’s nearly done – it’s gonna be like bricks” thought Bailey.
Now we are seeing bricks everywhere and will be looking for more on our walks around the school next week.
Kind regards,
Ali, Rosalie and Janine Chapple
"We went inside a building and saw nails, pipes and wood" observed Ryan "Buildings have skeletons made out of metal, wood and other types of stuff" suggested Ethan "I liked going inside the building to see the pipes" added Jesse "I liked going to the parks best" said Max A "Inside the house I saw dirt and rubbish, hammers and I like the really tall building too" stated Oliver
We had a fabulous time on our trip to the building site! Edgerley
Another week filled with construction! We loved our trip to Lightsview on Monday and saw all sorts of houses under construction. We were thrilled to observe a little digger creating a front yard. We stopped to see it scrape up the dirt and then open the bottom of its scoop to dump the soil. Thankyou to Olivia’s Dad for organising this wonderful trip for us. It encouraged lots of discussion about what our own homes were made from.
We continued to work on our cork and pop stick creations and began to add things like floors and walls. Come and have a look, some are over seven storeys high! We also began our brick house this week. Deacon, Erin, Lucy and Apollon and observed the patterns in the pictures of bricks and began to stack our tissue boxes in a similar way. We discovered we need lots more tissue boxes to make it into a real house!...so keep those tissue boxes coming in!

The children have been inspired by pictures of different buildings to create their own towers and structures. This week they have been building with wooden blocks, soft blocks, Duplo and waffle blocks outside. The children have created all sorts of different buildings but especially love to see how tall they can make their towers before they tumble down. This has required the children to problem solve how to create a structure that is stable.
“Tower, tall like a mountain” said Jack S, “ I make it bigger, big, big, build building” he added.
“I building a big house with a brick” said Eden
Thank you to Marcus who brought in a photo of his house to share with his peers. We would love photos of others children’s houses also to use as inspiration for our building next week.

Mead
Dear Mead Parents,
Last week we walked around the school and had a good look at the buildings and structures that are existing. The children found that there were lots of varied materials used, shapes, uses and designs. In particular, they found the stained glass windows in the school chapel very beautiful.
We decided to make our own stained glass windows in the Mead Room. The children have carefully designed their windows using black paper and coloured cellophane. They have created some varied designs and decided they wanted to display them on the Mead door - to create a stained glass door. Please come and have a look!
"I want to have a black cross so mine has four different parts" said Ella. "One purple, one orange, a blue and a red".
"Mine is going to be all different colours. It's really nice" Seth commented.
Best wishes,
Emma M, Susan and Emma G Cooper
As we continue to ‘Build It Up’ in Cooper the children have been thinking about all the different kinds of buildings in the community. They have built bridges and shops, rubbish dumps and car parks, stages and theatres (for The Wiggles). Angus suggested we could build a carwash and a small group of children used the blocks to construct walls, a roof, a driveway, signs and buttons.
“Wash car, wash car” said Jacob pushing a toy car through the tunnel.
“We have carwashes at home” Angus told us.
“You turn a ‘mote control on, it moves around and around, the car goes into the tunnel” explained Felix.
Later in the week another group of children built a car with waffle blocks to take through the carwash with the dolls. If anyone is looking for an outing this weekend, may we suggest the carwash?!
Kind regards,
Ali, Rosalie and Janine Chapple
As well as designing in our architect's corner and building with blocks and plasticine, the children have been interested in knitting and tom-boy stitching! If you have any wool or scraps of material you would like to donate to our classroom we would love to create a sewing corner for the children to continue to explore the world of needles and thread!
Warm wishes - Suria, Sinead and Sue
“It has to be a city, that’s the only thing I can build with this type of Lego” explained Michael “We are doing all the parts and there is a rubbish bin, the lid opens” added Tom “There is water here, we have done three bridges” said Michael “I wonder if we could do some more bridges coz there’s lots of ponds in the city” suggested Tom “This is Adelaide Oval, cricket and footy happens there” explained Tom further “The blue side is water, the green side is grass, and that bridge leads to another bridge – that’s really cool isn’t it!” exclaimed Michael excitedly “Yeah” agreed Tom “And here’s a fire station, they do have fire stations in Adelaide” added Tom
Edgerley
It was all go in Edgerley this week as students explored balance and symmetry through their constructions and observations. We walked through the school to look for shapes in buildings and discovered a few we weren’t sure of.
“Actually, that is called a arch” clarified Oliver as we looked at shapes on the main building
We headed towards the technology rooms and saw some more arches but they were pointy at the top like rockets.
“I think we call them diamond arches” shared Oliver again
We used Oliver’s knowledge to create arched constructions at the light table on our return.
We also enjoyed constructing with corks and pop sticks. We reflected on our constructions once they were dry and talked about which strategies helped successfully build taller towers. We will further explore the idea of foundations on our excursion to the building site next Monday.

Our display of house plans has inspired children to create sketches of their own houses. This has sparked some interesting conversations about what rooms make up their houses and what shapes can be seen in the plans;
My bed is upstairs, two bedrooms, one for Mummy and Daddy and one for the girls. Study and playroom – James S
Downstairs. A door and a gate, lock and shut door. Bathroom, a bath in the bathroom. And I have a roof like this (holds up the triangle) – Gwen
Triangle, me draw a circle – Hugo M
Draw my house and a kitchen. Big house. That’s bathroom – Jackson
A room, a blue bin. Mum room, my room, dad room and dat’s Sienna’s room. Titchen (kitchen) dere – Luca
To further extend on children’s interests in their own houses, we would love it if children could bring in some photographs of their houses.

Dear Mead Parents,
We have been observing, designing and constructing buildings and structures busily this week inside and outside the classroom. One of our highlights has been our walks around the school looking at the various buildings, shapes and materials used.
Look It's got chimneys. Five chimneys, and I can see a balcony! - Jack O
So the smoke can come out - Zach H
Wow. It's got a ramp - Gabe
For going down - Erin
I think this building is very, very old - Tommi
That building looks brand new. It looks new and shiney. It must have been made after the war - Jack O
It's made from metal - Jesse
And glass. It's a rectangle - Henry
That place (the uniform shop) is made for getting uniforms. It's made from cement - Oliver

Cooper
Building on the children's interest in emergency services, this week a small group of children played with the Woody Click fire station construction set. As we pieced the various walls, doors and windows together we talked about the parts a building needs...
“A floor” said Toby.
“Roof” said Cooper.
“The walls” added Toby.
“A door, a roof, a big roof over it” suggested Fletcher.
“A big roof” agreed Toby.
“Glass” said Angus.
The children had been interested in multi-storey buildings so we added another floor to our fire station but wondered how the firefighters would get up to the second floor...
“A lift” thought William.
“A ladder” said Toby.
“And some steps” said William.
The finished firestation looked great with trucks parked downstairs and beds for the firefighters upstairs - it even had a fireman's pole!
Kind regards,
Ali, Rosalie and Janine

This week we have discovered how buildings are planned, designed and built from the ground up. The children have been very interested in the plans or 'instructions' that the builders use to build houses and sky-scrapers and have tried to draw some of their own. We have had a lot of construction happening both inside and outside with a range of materials.
Thank you for sending in the photos of your homes, the children have enjoyed discussing the different kinds of houses we live in.

“We have to build the foundations first” said Oliver “What’s that?” asked Daniel B “That bit underneath here – that’s the foundations” replied Oliver “Ok, we’re building the foundations first” agreed Daniel B “Yeah, if we don’t have the foundations it won’t work, it won’t hold” exclaimed Oliver
Edgerley students were busy looking at, creating, designing and buildings. We began to think about why we build buildings and how they are constructed.
We continued to investigate how clocks work this week
“A clock shows us what time it is” said Ajeet
“Big hand up the top says o’clock” said Sami
“We have afternoon tea at free o’clock” said Cooper
“Time is when you go to school” said Ajeet
“Then we know what the number is, then we know which time it is” said Lucy
“To show you what time it is to go somewhere” added Cooper
We were also thrilled to see our little chickens again this week. After they hatched at Kindergarten Apollon took home a yellow and black one. With the help of Grandpa Apollons chickens have grown very big. We were surprised to discover that the yellow one is now white. We were even more surprised when they tried to fly away in the classroom! Ahhhhhh!
Kind regards
Mel, Pip and Rachel
